On our site you will find stories of crimes and real life events that took place between the 1800’s right up to present day. Victorian England was a place of hardship and life was nothing like it is today.

Using several resources, we dig up the crimes, events and oddities that have long since been forgotten.

We also participate in the odd ghost hunt now and again.

Please be respectful in the comments and towards not only Vickie and myself, but also other people. If you can't be respectful, you WILL be muted and your comment(s) deleted.

Other than that, feel welcome to join our little community and we hope you enjoy the content we provide.

We have a SECOND channel called 'Dunn Seeing', where you can join us on our trips around the UK as well as abroad.

A very sad outcome for Ann and a bizarre and disturbing crime. 😢

It looks like an assassination? The weapon could not be a catapult, not 20 yards away and going through clothing and embedding the projectile in his shoulder. I suspect some form of hybrid crossbow with a tip designed to break off. Dark night and raining, the rest of the projectile may be picked up by the offender? The wall of silence is strange, is that due to fear of who killed him or was James Dawson not a liked man by the locals if he was a womaniser? A compelling case . Well presented and what a strange story.

This is a difficult one. Masters went to visit James, but not with the intention of stealing or murder. Even if Masters was a 'bad un' nowadays, you would have to prove intent. The stealing of money or not, should not influence the outcome of the sentence of death as it is the lesser crime to murder. I think today the sentence outcome would be manslaughter.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand why Alice's mother would sign a petition for Arthur's reprieve. He went out that morning with the intention of murder. Justice done. Alice did not deserve to die just because she no longer wanted to be in this budding relationship.
@DaysofHorror

Her mother didn't believe in the death penalty. That was her reasoning.

How truly sad this story is... a very moving one at that. I wonder if today's youth have the courage that young boy had, to fight for his country at this time ? Rest In Peace JACK BANKS.

Talking of religion sir "the father the son and the holy -----?" The missing word is Ghost so religion both believes in them and on the other hand they don't!

I'm convinced that they'd met up regularly for a drink and never needed to cover their tracks until a tragic accident happened.Robert gave the statement to the inquest so that he wouldn't lose his job. Remember it was dark, they'd already had a few pints in the pub before they started work and it appears that he left the signal box in between the occasional trains that passed through the night on a regular basis. In my mind he went to the treatment works, Tipsy, tripped and fell.

Good discussion.. I'd also wonder who was the Home Secretary both instances, and which government was in & time in office.. who were politics pleasing.. what were their beliefs.. but in the US they admit to the crime and then they get life without parole. Also people may not have written a petition in their names. I don't believe in Capital punishment unless it's serial (incl terror) or crimes against children. Even then I want a water tight no questions asked proof. Very good thought provoking episode.. think next year you should consider going to the US and do prison tours.. not as fun as florida but so interesting..

What a ghastly tale, it reminds me of Jack The Ripper's last victim Mary Anne Kelly he just obliterated her. I don't quite understand why he felt he had to completely cut poor Anne up. At least they got the killer and delt with him occordingly he would of been hanging there for some years I would of thought.
