At the start of 1876, within the small town of Blackburn, Lancashire - Emily Mary Holland was just 7 years old when her life was taken away from her by a local man by the name of WILLIAM FISH, a local barber who lived on the same street as her and her parents.
This crime came only second to that of the infamous Jack the Ripper murders that came later in 1888 due to it’s barbarity and with a child being at the center of such a crime, it made news headlines worldwide.
An intensive and at times exhausting police investigation took place with many homeless people being arrested. Although evidence against them extremely poor leading to most, if not all of the men, being released.
The murder of young Emily, whilst shocking an entire nation, also became the first to be solved with the use of bloodhounds and it was one such hound by the name of ‘Morgan’ that helped bring Fish to justice.

This story close to my heart as it's the very first I looked into when starting Days of Horror. Young Emily should never have had to suffer the way she did. We always visit her grave in Blackburn Cemetery everytime we visit and spend 10 or 15 minutes there in passing.

It just shows that there have been very sick individuals down through the ages. God bless this wee darling for what she went through was horrendous. Back in those days i think it would have been harder to watch predators.

Thanks Jules. One story we feel close to with it being one of the first we came across when researching local stories. It was so brutal and simply avoidable but we can never understand what goes through people's minds leading up to attacks, especially on children.

My old man lived on Daisy street in the 50/60 . The posts at the end of the cinder path were not there so the murderer couldn’t have touched them . The world was a completely different place with less people and close communities spirit all around . Unlike today . Great channel , keep up the good work !

The posts just looked old and it was just an eerie thought that perhaps he may have placed a hand on them whilst walking past 😮 But it's one of the first stories we looked into right at the very beginning and still sticks with myself now. We always visit Emily's grave in the old Cemetery when we do other stories over there.

@gingerali it's the Whalley road one. Her grave is : enter the cemetery, walk up to the war memorial directly in front. Turn left and then up towards tip of that lane/road. Her grave is on the left and cleaned up. Usually with a teddy bear of sorts. Can't miss it 👍

This was one of the first stories we came across when starting out with our days of horror website. Its kinda close to our hearts now, and we always visit young Emily's grave when we go to that cemetery. It's also a story we are going to retell as we have more information now than we did back when we made this video. Also, we have a new location to visit which we weren't sure about last time around so hopefully a better video on this story will be made this year.

I've just watched it back, and my god, it's cringy. I remember the day we filmed and I wasn't confident at all with the camera. Rushing my words, I had a different microphone and it sounds horrendous now, it was windy in parts. The music I used is also not what I'd use now. Yep, definately going to redo this story but make it much better and coherent.

Loving the channel. Better local history than any mainstream offerings who never understand our culture and quite frankly never liked us. I wouldn't mind you doing some further into the West Ridings closer to me, if you run out of horrific stories to cover over there lol

Much appreciated Grotty :-) We would love to travel as further as we can, money is always the issue at the moment though. But we have plans for the rest of this year and definately into next year to keep pushing ourselves a little further away from where we live.

I was a young boy living on Birley st, back in 1965,I also went to St Alban's school, and the story of that poor little girl was known to many people even all those years later, The infamous barber on moss st was the stand out horror fact ,and the chimney being used for hiding parts of her body. The Story is of such horror, that it seems almost unimaginable. Thanks for highlighting this most infamous murder.

Hi Rob, many thanks for commenting 👍 This is one of the very first stories we came across at the very beginning of Days of Horror, and one that still disturbs us both today. It was horrific and what people must have gone through, family, friends, neighbours during that period must have been frightening, saddening, horrific and a lot more. Its also a story we have since found more information on with regards to covering it again but in more detail. The amount of stories we have also uncovered regarding children and how they were treated back in the 1800s is unbelievable!

Absolutley horrific case this one. What possess anyone to do what William Fish did is beyond comprehension. He may have felt remorse towards the end, but what goes on in someone's head prior and during committing such acts?

I can still remember all the houses that was in the community in the 60s. Around that area and the farm my freind lived up there. OK sort walk but all up hill through the steep streets couldn't have been that easy to move the torso up there from the murder scene.

It's awful, isn't it. On a personal level, I honestly do not know why this story of poor Emily is one I take to heart the most, out of all the videos we have done. We have covered similar stories, but this one just hits home more. We will be putting together a new video on this story, so hopefully, it will be far better than the original one.

@@DaysofHorror I can understand why, she was a delightful little girl who had a very kind heart and it is almost unbearable to think of what she suffered at the hands of that monster. I believe he is suffering the torment of hell and Emily is safe now in the arms of Jesus Christ.

Hi there guys i no this was 3years ago you guys done this video and you can the boys and lady coming a cross of the young girl half of her body you never get used of death a specially when why been murder and i was a volunteer rescue squad member for 20years N.S.W RESCUE ASSOCIATION its bad Of when you got to go to cars crashed mate . You are absolutely correct with the Fanny Adams comparisons. That's a story we have pencilled in, and we have looked at where to stay overnight, so we are hoping to cover that story soon. But yes, that's a story that is perhaps even more shocking than Emily Holland.

The newspaper accounts of the story are even more disturbing when detailing what he did to Emily. I watered it down in this video and it amazes me how detailed and graphic the accounts where back in the early days of the press when it came to detailing murders! I know today's papers can be bad but I dont think I've read anything as detailed in terms of today's murders in our papers as I have with this story which occurred in the 1800s! And thanks for the kind comment too :)

I also forgot that I recorded a segment on the upbringing of William and how he lost his mother at a young age and how he also suffered a serious accident by falling off a viaduct bridge, again, at a young age and the effects it had on him during his life. Some say he suffered brain injury that resulted in violent outburst that may have occurred on the day he took the life of Emily. Not that it's an excuse for what he did but it may have been a cause on that afternoon. For some reason the audio again wasnt the best so I had to leave that out 😠

Wow! Chris you have nailed it. The details you have put in this video was perfect. The photos added blended into the video perfectly. You have set the standard high. Now on a more serious note poor Emily a shocking tail to hear. I’m glad he was hung for his crimes he deserved to suffer. It must of been heartbreaking for her parents, I would hate to be in that situation. I read that you had watered it down, I wouldn’t like to have read the original article shocking! Thanks DOH Team.

Yeah, there are loads more in the old newspapers but I didn't think I really needed to go into too much detail as what I say in the video was perhaps enough lol I was gutted though that some footage where I spoke about Williams upbringing didn't come out great, sound was unusable again for some reason.
