This is my take on Colter Walls wonderful blues/country song The Devil Wears A Suit And Tie, one of the better ones written in the genre the last couple of years in my opinion. I play it quite close to, but not exactly as, his original. After all, personal interpretation is half of what this type of music is all about (plus, I can't play it exactly as he does since I'm not good enough at fingerpicking ;)).

Wow very interesting rendition! I gotta admit, I had doubts, but you did a lot better than I thought. He's a hard artist to cover because his sound is so unique, but you did great!

Thanks a lot Jeremy! Yeah, I had my doubts myself to if I should even give it a go since he has such a personal sound. Decided to try and do it in my own way, but still capture the mood of the original. Really glad you like it!

Extravagant. Nice suit and tie. Wouldn't be caught dead. You sir are an oxymoron, and that is respectable. Cheers.

This is one of my favorite songs! This is a beautiful rendition! Love the finger picking and the original voice, tons of talent!

Thank you so very much Niki! I really appreciate that and, yes, it is such a good song. I especially appreciate that you like the fingerpicking since I only took that up seriously about a year ago (although I’ve been playing the guitar since my early teens) and consider myself nowhere near Colter himself, so I was dubious to whether I should even try to record this one. ;)

@@RonnieGavelin hey man I am self taught and it took me many years to perfect a natural arpeggiation! I cannot tell, though i am without training that you weren't trained yourself! Good work and great inspiration, keep it goin! Nowhere to go but up my friend!
@RonnieGavelin

Kind words indeed! I am trained to a certain degree though - studied guitar between about 12 and 18 years of age, but the rest I’ve picked up as I went along and there was no fingerpicking in those classes. Do you have any of your stuff uploaded that I can listen to somewhere?

Nobody can ever be as great with this song as colter but you did better than I expected!

I agree completely, so ”better than expected” is a great compliment under the circumstances. Thanks Aiden!

@@RonnieGavelin it's actually one of his easier songs to play other than say Kate Mccannon or The Devil Wears A Suit And Tie
@RonnieGavelin
@RonnieGavelin 3 года назад
Yeah, I’ve been playing it at home sometimes. It’s very straight forward compared to some of his other stuff.

I recently got that guitar. What do you like fir strings on it?
@RonnieGavelin
@RonnieGavelin 3 года назад
They’re great guitars and are great value for money! Only had mine for a short while though before I sold it to raise money for a Martin, so I never got around to experiment much with different strings. Only used Elixir Nanowebs on it for the time I had the guitar and really liked how they performed on it though!

I prefer the raw sound from the guitar in the original. But fun song.

Matt Davis Yeah, I actually agree. It turned out a bit too ”slick” sounding since I line it. Thinking of getting one more microphone in the future instead.

@@BiaRosy I love the style, and still use it to a certain extent, especially if going out or attending an event. I often tone it down a bor nowadays though, since people tend to think that I just want to be a Peaky Blinder since the show came. ;)

Not bad, but i prefer Colter's voice and the rawness of his guitar, but yours is very good, and I mean that
@RonnieGavelin
@RonnieGavelin 3 года назад
Thanks Ethan! Really appreciate that and absolutely agree. No one can sound as raw as Colter , so for me to try and imitate or match that would just be stupid - hence I just did it the way I can. In fact, out of all the songs I’ve done here on YT this is one the one’s I’ve been most hesitant about doing simply since the original version is so unique and impossible to match.

@RonnieGavelin
@RonnieGavelin 3 года назад
@@ethanowen4417 Definitely not! It seems pretty straight forward bluesy country when you first hear it, but then when you try to play it yourself it’s like ”what the hell is going on here - how does he play that so easily!?” ;)
