Thanks! The roughness is indicative to what kind of spin characteristics a paddle might have. The rougher the paddle, the more grip it’s going to have to hold onto the ball as the shot bounces off the paddle. At this time I don’t include rpm, as there’s a lot more work involved. People already complain that my mph videos are subjective to many variables. Collecting spin rpms would be just the same subjective material. Two paddles of equal size using different surfaces would have different rpms. The roughest, in most cases, will produce the highest spin rates, with all things being equal. This is why we Starrett test the paddle surface.

Hi. I compared a new Icon Lite to a loaner model at my local shop and the new Icon lite paddle has a silky smooth face compared to the used loaner model that has more of a grippy/ rubber feel. Has the face texture changed in the newer models? The dealer attributed it to the age and use of the paddle.

I haven’t come across the “Lite” version, but the one I tested here was smooth as glass.

I talked to diadem and they told me they switched manufacturers. Big mistake because that rubbery part gave it grit, now they are just silky smooth can’t grin ball at all.

Are these the smoothest readings you have seen? Starret test looks like glass, other paddles over the 30 and 40 limit and this one like 6.5 and 8.5??

@@pbjpickleball That's crazy! They say it has a lot of spin too. Maybe there is something to be said for the tech inside of a paddle having as much to do with spin as the grit you can feel to the touch. Thanks so much for posting all of these tests, as a paddle junkie I love watching all of them. Keep up the great work!
