My preferred measuring tape is the Hultafors Talmeter. The VP model have a diameter feature. Only metric versions.

Well I was AWOL for quite a while. The algorithm doesn't particularly like that.

Looks very handy, a less expensive version of the Pi tape. Those have a vernier scale and can be read to 0.001".

I have actually never seen, or perhaps never noticed those. I can easily see where a small one would be nice to have on occasion. Great video.

Cool tool Stuart, We had them in the quality department to measure toilet paper and towel rolls. Very handy and easy to use also good for soft products. Cheers!

A Pi tape. Used on ring gears (rubber band) to determine diameter after heat treat for example. .

I haven't seen one since the 1960s. It was an old one back then.

Hi, That is a Pie tape, Egyptians used them to keep vertical uprights at a regular diameter, and a level to ensure they were vertical and lnow which phase of the moon were (next).
@StuartdeHaro
@StuartdeHaro 2 года назад
Yup. I avoided calling it a pi tape though because there is a company with a trademark on that and I didn't want to run afoul of them.

Great- where can I buy a pie tape calibrated in cubits? ;-}

As a metric user, I was briefly very confused by the funny looking decimal inches.
@Tensquaremetreworkshop
@Tensquaremetreworkshop 2 года назад
Decimal inches would be a great improvement. Machinists use these all the time (they call them thou and tenths...) but others are lumbered with fractions- the main issue with imperial measurement (inches vs metres are minor, it is fractions vs decimal that is the problem). One fallout is that fractional drills are not enough, so number and letter drills have to be sprinkled in there. Why can't you buy decimal (imperial) drills?
@j.dietrich
@j.dietrich 2 года назад
@@Tensquaremetreworkshop The decimal inches on this tape are confusing for metric users because at first glance they look like centimetres. One inch divided by pi is 0.8cm. For a similar experience, I'd suggest looking for a photo of an old Japanese carpenter's tape. They were traditionally marked in centimetres and _sun_ - one sun is about 1.2 inches. The size of drills is usually dictated by other factors. Either you're drilling a clearance hole for a fastener, or you're drilling in preparation for a secondary operation such as tapping or reaming. My most commonly-used drills are odd diameters for this reason. An M8 thread has a major diameter of 8mm, but the hole needs to be drilled to somewhere between 6.8mm and 7.2mm depending on the subsequent operation and the desired depth of thread. From my perspective, a thou is quite an inconvenient unit. 0.001" is equivalent to 25.4 microns, which is bigger than the typical tolerances I work to. Maybe it's easier if you're used to it, but I quickly get confused by tenths and hundredths of a thou. It's an interesting cultural difference, I think driven by the kind of work we tend to do. A thou is a really tiny dimension if you're making a part for an oil rig, but it's huge if you're making watch parts. I'm reminded of the saying that "In Europe, a hundred miles is a long distance; in America, a hundred years is a long time". Neither perspective is wrong, it's just different.

@@j.dietrich The point I was trying to make was that decimal inches would be a step forward- the beauty of Metric is that is is decimal too (the latter being more important- units sizes are arbitrary). Drills are in decimal sizes, and no charts of where numeric and letter drills fit needed. Once decimal, sizes can be refined without limit. US machinists use thou and tenths because they live in a land of fractions, and e.g. their drills are. Indeed their drawings often mix fractions and decimals... Interestingly their dowel gauges ARE decimal- because fractions would not make any sense. For me, use inches if want- but using decimals.

I don't mean this to be rude, but why not use the normal tape and divide by pi? I know there's a dozen ways to skin a cat, but it doesn't seem like hunting down your specialty tape would be faster than punching numbers into a calculator?

Most normal measuring tapes have that curve to them to stiffen the tape. That makes it difficult if not impossible to wrap around an object. Besides it's just neat to have another trick up one's sleeve.

@@StuartdeHaro Common tape measure are graduated in fractions not accurate within 0.001". A Pi tape is direct reading without math. A Pi tape is WAY COOL to use. When I go to the machine shop in the sky, let there be a Pi Tape in my estate for my beneficiaries to ponder how cool I was.
