In today's video, I'll explain the difference between being an intern, post-master's clinician, associate, and fully licensed therapist. Go Girl! I am In N.C.! Your video was perfect for me as a senior citizen... I have an LCMFT-A therapist and used google to find the meaning of an associate. I was embarrassed to ask the therapist... Her youthfulness is an asset for me as I believe generational differences are so important to experience. Though you have fewer hours, you like she, can help elder adults improve skills interacting with younger professionals. Aging has never frightened me; however, changes in society are difficult to master when one is more of a spectator, than participant.

Congratulations!!! California is different. I am a registered Associate Marriage and Family Therapist. So there’s no license, and while in school I was a Marriage and Family Therapist Trainee. Once registered, within your first year of being an Associate MFT, you have to take a Law and Ethics exam. Then when you accrue 3,000, you will take the LMFT exam 😅 There are HUGE differences state to state, and I hope that everyone pays close attention to their state board website.

Thank you! Oh wow! Yes, California is probably the most strenuous. Many schools will even have specialization for the California track because there are more credit hours required than the other states. I agree that it's very important to do your research!

Congratulations!! 💕 I was wondering if you can do a video on finding your style as a therapist? In grad school, I always heard professors telling us that we should have a specific model that you like to use and know your style by the time you graduate. I just graduated back in May and working but I still have no idea what model I'm more attuned with and what my therapeutic style is, and I feel that it causes me to get stuck with clients at times.

I googled what is a licensed associate marriage and family therapist and this video popped up on google 👏🏾👏🏾 so cool. My state calls us a licensed intern. Same difference. Licensed associate is smoother than the word intern. Some are uneasy about this.

This makes sense, I wished Nevada looked the mft licensure process this way. In school we completed a practicum. Post masters we are required to complete a “state internship” and we used to be required test after we accumulate at least half of our hours (1,500) now we can test as soon as we are approved for our “state internship” we are required to accumulate 3,000 hours and pass our mft exam.

Congratulations! That’s exciting to be a LMFT. It’s interesting to learn about the differences between states in terms of the verbiage used to describe where a therapist is at post bachelors or masters. I currently have my masters in social work. Here in Arizona you are basically an intern in you practice while in your bachelors or masters program. Post grad your just a social worker with a masters degree and after you can earn more pay with your masters degree post taking the ASWB exam. Then if you want to earn more pay, after officially accumulating supervision hours from the 2-3 years towards being a licensed clinical social worker, then you can do private practice or become a superior. I am going to be starting a new job soon, could you make a video on how to prepare for a therapist job?.. thanks for sharing your video! :)

I do touch on this in “I Quit My Corporate Job to Work for Free,” but long story short it didn’t work out and I ultimately had to quit the job because it was too much for me. Some people do it though. We pretty much relied on my husband’s income at that time.

I practice from Nevada and we use the term mfti post degree can also start a private practice under supervision with cash pay clients. We also don't have to wait to take the exam too.

This is so confusing and overwhelming! Thank you so much! I was worried that after graduating, those 2 years/3,000 hours was basically an unpaid internship because you are not licensed yet. How exactly do you find that job/portion of your licensure journey? Like how would you search that in Google? I’m asking all of these questions for my wife who is currently in school online at touro university getting her masters in MFT. We wanted to move after she graduated to Seattle (we live in PA) and her start her 3,000 supervised hours there. We just needed to find out how to search for that job and if it’s paid! Also was wondering if it will be an issue getting an online degree from a school based in California then doing those 2 years in Seattle! Thank you!

Wow you could work with Cigna as an associate? I’m in ohio and Cigna only wants independent licenses. So here it’s LMFT for dependent license (associates) and then fully license is LIMFT.

Thank you! No, you’re licensed on a state-by-state basis. If I want to apply my licensure in other states, I’d have to go through their application process.

I saw about 23 clients per week. If you can see at least 20 per week, you can even take some vacations and still get your 2,000 hours in 2 years.

@@StephAnya we register at the end of the four year course once all requirements are completed. At the end of year one it’s a certificate, year 2 a postgraduate certificate or diploma. Years 3 and 4 are masters level. There is a viva in the final year of the Masters. Once passed, it’s straight to registration using either systemic psychotherapist, family therapist or couples and family therapist title. The UK doesn’t have exams if say I move from England into Scotland. We are one, not like in the US. We however do not do diagnosing here under that professional title. I can see why the exams would be needed in that case, but I find the prospect of an MFT diagnosing a medical diagnosis truly scary especially if you’ve not been a clinical psychologist or psychiatrist in original training.
