In this video I wanted to give a brief description on the mitre saw in sharing how I define the difference between a mitre cut and a bevel cut. I find a lot of people who use this saw mix up their terminology, so I felt a quick tutorial on the terms would help solve the confusion.
For a link to all the tools used see below:

I am reading through a book for carpentry and building. I was not understanding the difference. Your video was just what was needed... AND RIGHT TO THE POINT!

I'm using my deceased fiance's mitre saw just hoping I don't chop my fingers off struggling to cut trim for the bathroom, thank you!!! It was incredibly straight forward compared to other vids explaining things.

not going to lie, I've been searching for someone to explain this to me HOWEVER, I caught none of what you said the first time around because goodness, you're one good looking fella. Caught the concept (bc you used the best parallel - the x & y axis) the second time around... as well as that ring 😂

I just bought a combination miter saw. This was quite helpful as I had not used one before yesterday, but I have used a miter box, circular saws, jig saws, and a scroll saw. Yesterday all I did was cut a few 90° angles though.

Great video. It's simple, but I needed it explained :) Doing baseboards, I see everyone saying do a 'bevel', then I proceed to see them use the miter gauge. But they are standing the baseboard vertically (which for me seems easier) and they *are* making a bevel cut at that point - if I understood you correct. Thanks!
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer 3 года назад
Only works with short trim, standing vertically. The bevel is the best use for tall trims. You essentially are beveling the trim when its base and mitre cutting when its casing.

Good explanation. I have been perfecting my cuts & although there is plenty of info on calculating bevel (x) cuts for baseboards, there are not many about true mitre (y) cuts. The real challenge I am working on is how to calculate a combined bevel & mitre cut for say a wall which is not plumb as well as a non 90' bevel... It is not so easy!

With that example piece you have there, would it be possible to cut both ends of that wood with a saw that only does mitre? I guess the decision to use bevel comes down to height of the wood?
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer 4 года назад
You definitely can achieve the bevel cut if you stand small trim vertically. You are right on the height of the piece being your factor. Hence the reason we get into sliders 👍

I can try to show you, but mine are all dual bevel. The key is with flat trim to flip in backwards to get the reversed face angle.

okay so i have a 7 inch high base board.. I lay it flat and tilt my blade to 45° Is this a bevel or mitre cur??

Miter and bevel cuts are uniquely defined by the cross section of the object being cut. Using the same angle for a miter cut or a bevel cut on square or round sectional objects yield the same shape.
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer 2 года назад
Yes as well as the fact they call the saw a bevel when your axis rotates in the X vs the Y.

Dear Chris, I have a less related question for you. Are you satisfied with you milwaukee miter saw? I am researching for buying a good miter saw and I can not decide between Dewalt 780 and Milwaukee 305. Could you please help?
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer 3 года назад
Milwaukee is great but really love my Bosch! Dewalt is mid line, Milwaukee has great features like digital gauge but Bosch has zero clearance and no slider maintenance.

Cutting square section wood then - you get to choose whether you're cutting a mitre or bevel?
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer Год назад
If the cut runs thru the vertical plane it's a bevel, horizontal is mitre, but yes a flat stock can be both.
@davedaniels8211

Had to watch this 3 times before it clicked. If the blades laying down its a bevel , if its upright its a mitre. I think ....🇬🇧
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer 3 года назад
Haha it's really how you hold the trim. Chop cuts are bevel and miter is when you cut it like a picture frame...hope that helps.
@AlbertMaruggi

what's parallel and non parallel miter cuts?
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer 4 года назад
Not sure I follow the parallel, I didn't use these terms. I speak to the axis. My guess for what you're asking is parallel being along the floor and non parallel being perpendicular. So non parallel is essentially a mitre, sound in line?
@AlbertMaruggi
@AlbertMaruggi 4 года назад
@@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer no I saw it somewhere else and could not get an explanation. However I think parallel is where you make the say 30 degree angle cut where the longest corner is on the top side of the board. That cut means you switch the miter from left to right, I think.
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer 4 года назад
@@AlbertMaruggi interesting..30 degree cut? Perhaps this is regarding crown cuts on the flat with the 33.9 degree angles
@bryanlloyd4
@bryanlloyd4 3 года назад
They are referring to the two cuts you make on a single board. If the cut requires a 45° parallel, then both the cuts on that same board are parallel to each other. If it's a non-parallel cut one of the ends on the board is going one way while the other end is going the other direction

so the only difference is bevel is when you have something needs cutting TALL wise, and Mitre is something you need cutting FLAT wise?
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer
@HandcraftedbyChrisPalmer Год назад
Roughly yes, but it's more about the axis direction of the saw 🙂

Vertical cuts are mitres. When your saw cuts on an angle horizontally it would be bevel. 👍😉
