Well, not anymore, at least😉 It has "matured" as a faith, and it is easy to see why secular and democratic nations are now compatible with Judeo-Christian values. That is why Israel is a successful democracy, the only proper liberal democracy in the Middle East, and why the west has been successful at separating the church/synagogue/temple from the state yet still maintaining the core principles and values of those faiths. Islam, however, is still stuck in the 7th century. Here you have a religious ideology that is in constant conflict with virtually every other religion. The behavior of its followers display openly what Islam is all about. Muslims - and I'm generalizing here, because there are sadly too few of them who are reasonable or sensible when it comes to their faith - have the least tolerance for other religions. If there is a religious conflict anywhere in the world you can bet Islam is involved. Of the world's major religions I'd say Hinduism and Buddhism are the two most peaceful, and it shows in the behavior of their respective followers. Hindus and Buddhists, for example, assimilate incredibly well into western societies. Muslims fail miserably; the results we see almost daily.

In the US religions are constrained by american law. This tends to supress the nastier habits of most religions. That constraint may color how americans view many religions, especially the ones that are 'cool' at the time. Religions that have political power become dangerous. I've been thinking the same thing for years, since the first time I heard somebody say they "hated religions".... If you asked him how many religions he knew: only catholic... So he just assumed they were all the same, same structure, hierarchy, believes but... With other names almost.
