Interesting fact: The Gripen is the only plane that, in over two decades of service with five different air forces, has NEVER suffered an engine failure making it the safest and most reliable fighter jet ever made despite having only one engine.

Now, 9 years later it is reasonable to assume there has been more combat missions flown. Still no engine failures. Apparently, take an american design and hand it over to swedish engineers and you get something very reliable (the GE404/Volvo RM12 engine).

Gripen is the best choice considering a 4th++ air fighter generation. The costs per flight/hour is the lowest among 4th++ generation air fighters. However, the disadvantages is minimal comparing with other aircrafts on same generation. Comparing costs with Tiphoon Eurofighter program is almost humiliating! For Brazil, was the best thing happened in decades considering the technology transfering. The tendency is tha Brazil make a hudge advance in terms of know-how to build its own version of this air fighter. Did you know that touchscreen built for the newest version of Gripen was developed in Brazil? The SAAB replace the old one for the ours! This is so cool! I'm very proud of us!

I find that these episodes on military hardware lack sufficient research. This episode for example, the Gripen E is to be used by Sweden, replacing earlier built Gripens. Some of the early Gripens are to be re-manufactured into the E standard. The Brazilians will be building them under license, with the Gripen F for the Brazilian Air Force. Sweden has yet to decide if they will buy the F variant. With the Typhoon, some countries you mentioned, like Finland, are only looking at the Typhoon, along with other fighters as replacements for their current aircraft. To me, it sounded like those countries had already decided to buy them. Then there's Austria. They have all but decided to retire their current fleet of Typhoons. They found them too costly to keep flying.

No, older 39's are not to be re-manufactured into the 39E standard. It's not possible as they are physically different. There were however plans to use few parts from older 39 when building new 39E.

@@AlexKall - Brazil is going to be buying *both* the E and F variants. They've also signaled some interest in the electronic warfare variant, but they already have a pretty potent AWACs-style force, so this might not be particularly important. Should they ever acquire an aircraft carrier, my guess is that the Gripen Maritime carrier-based version might actually see production, but that's a long shot. Brazil *is* buying a helo carrier from the Royal Navy, but unless they're thinking of buying F-35Bs (they're not) or used AV-8Bs (they're not), no planes will be taking off from it.

As for the EFT there are also huge issues with keeping them in the air regardless of the CPFH due to incompatible subsystems and parts not being available.. I looked extensively at that Gripen and did the analysis on it when I worked for the U.S. Air Force. It is one of the most cost-effective aircraft out there and is fully capable of nearly everything the Eurofighter is capable of. The best part about this aircraft is not only the cost per unit, it's the cost of life cycle management or the cost of operation over time. When Brazil decided not to go w/ the F18 thanks to Edward Snowden and his traitor ass, Brazil made a really great choice when they went with the Gripen E/F. The primary reason its not favored is due to the single engine which was the major complaint. That said, its reliability is almost unmatched and its reputation for quality exceeds many other aircraft my country makes. Reliability, low cost per unit, cost of operation, weapons configuration, weapon capatibility, and an extremely good radar really make me have immense respect for the Swedish. Much love and respect to the designers and engineers and maintainers of this plane. I'm happy we are allies.

EAP was most definitely not a prototype Typhoon. It was a technology demonstrator to explore everything from composite primary structures to digital fly by wire. Many components off the shelf, most notably the engines. Typhoon prototype DA1 was en entirely different design, albeit using the technologies proven on EAP and with a similar layout. While there have been several versions of the Typhoon as it has developed, the implication that they are nation specific is entirely false. The nine prototypes did carry different test equipment to suit their areas of development, but essentially a Luftwaffe Tranche 1 jet is identical to an RAF Tranche 1 jet (T.1 or F.2 in RAF service). The major RAF versions are the T.3 and FGR.4 (both Tranche 2). At present it appears that the RAF's Tranche 3s will stick with T.3 and FGR.4, but I suspect this will change. JAS-39E was designed for the Flygvapnet, although the F really has been developed specifically for Brazil. Gripen is a superb little jet and a great choice for the budget conscious. Its range is obviously limited, especially when carrying a large weapon load. Typhoon is an altogether different beast, despite the video's claims. It has more than twice the power of Gripen and can super cruise (Gripen cannot, although the new E can). Most importantly, Typhoon is designed for supersonic, BVR combat. In essence, if you mess with one and you're not in an F-22 or an F-35, you're dead long before you get any chance at all to dogfight. I don't know who came up with the meaningless 74% and 75%, but no pilot who's flown both will agree: in WVR combat only the F-22 comes close. Crucially, the Typhoon carries a far bigger, more powerful radar than Gripen; CAPTOR is the most capable mechanically scanned radar ever fitted to a fighter, exceeding the performance of many early PESA and AESA sets. What you've also overlooked is the fact that many of the Gripen's systems are actually made by the same contractors as Typhoon's, so the technology is very similar, but on a smaller scale.

Another unique feature of Typhoon: it has the unique ability to dogfight at 9G for FAR longer than is possible in any other fighter. The flight suit worn by the pilot and the plane's systems allow extended use of 9G as a norm, not only in short bursts as with most other fighters. Also it's climb rate is simply phenomenal! Pilots who have flown both say that Typhoon and F-22 RAPTOR perform pretty equally at close quarters, but with different strengths and weaknesses. Of course, the F-22 stealth capability give it an advantage in BVR, but the CAPTOR radar helps narrow this down very fast as range decreases. In a near-peer scenario, the Typhoon would be odds-on favourite, with F-22 tops!

You really need to consider tiers in this regard. It's to the liking of comparing the F22 and the F35A, the F16 to the F15, the F14 to the F18. While granted, the Eurofighter and the Grippen were developed by different countries, let me explain how this rule still goes into play. The F35A in Air Superiority could never outperform the F22, but it's a cheaper multirole plane that could help win the numbers game more so than the F22 ever could. The F18 in regards to weapons load couldn't beat the F14. The F14 was an amazingly capable platform, just maintenance costs were what ultimately killed the program. Anywhom, heavy vs light attack aircraft. Does that make sense? The Typhoon fills the heavy attack role at a higher cost, the Grippen serves a light attack role at a lower cost. Since these planes were developed by different countries, it just goes to suit their individual needs. Grippen suits Sweden as it doesn't have a huge budget, needs to be able to operate if airfields were bombed, the works. Britain & the other countries developing the aircraft took a different approach. That simple. Edit: you can't really logically compare these.

@Molanda Moseley of the FBI, because the F-18 performs its mission much better. It doesn't need the same range with the increase in SAM tech and BVR missiles. Not to mention that the F-18 out performs the F-14 in all aspects excluding speed and range. I'll also add that the Super Hornet has minor stealth properties, but sure. I would also say 10 AMRAAMS is a better fleet defense loadout than 6 Phoenixs, which are awful, but say what you will.
@verdebusterAP
@verdebusterAP 5 лет назад
@@Molanda Moseley of the FBI So basically, you just an F-14 whinner. "he f18 is useless in any war with a major power whereas an f14 can at least do some damage protecting the carrier" Lets look at facts shall www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/11355/this-syria-bound-super-hornet-is-carrying-a-uniquely-massive-bomb-load Here is an F-18 loaded with ten 1000bls JDAM Versus twitter.com/rowlandwhite/status/840623655038136321 The F-14 at best carried 4 JDAMs or PAVEWAY, a under half of what the F-18 can carry Next weapons the F-18 can carry JASSM,LRSAM, SLAM/ER, HARMs, JSOW, MAVERICK, whereas F-14 can carry nada See whiner, the F-14's problem was its design. The F-18 adopted the A-6s wing design which allows it carry a great deal of weapons. The F-14 only usable area was the SMS in the middle which limits the weapons it can use. The wing design allows the F-18 use the buddy store as well be adopted for electronic warfare. So the F-18 hands down has vastly superior air to ground capabilities. Now lets look at ACM as well Bob Kress, and Rear Adm Paul Gillicrist, the famous F-14 whinners who couldnt get a clue. The F-14s mach 2.3 speed plus AIM-54 and AWG-9 made it very effective fleet defense fighter for its time but that combination had its problems First the AIM-54 was massive. Weighing at 1000lbs. Secondly the AIM-54 was only used by the F-14. F-14 rarely carried a full load of AIM-54 as stressed the airframe. There too few improvements made the AIM-54 to justify trying to adapt to other plane. Advancements in technology showed that the lighter AIM-120 could be adapted for the fleet defense role and it was. While the AIM-54 was a strictly a USN project, the AIM-120 was joint so there was plenty funds available. An F-18 can carry up to 10 AIM-120 compared to just 6 on the F-14. Most importantly, the lighter AIM-120 does not stress the frame of the F-18 The AWG-9 biggest issue was that it's powerful signal would light RWR on planes it targeted. The F-18s APG-65/73 didnt match or exceed the AWG-9 as those radars are built for multi role whereas the AWG-9 was solely air defense. Just like before, advances in technology, the newer AESA AN/APG-79 exceeds the AWG-9 capabilities. Kress and Gillcrist were trying save the F-14 similar to how the USAF developed the F-15E however the F-14 had already left a sour taste in congress mouth. Iran, the TF-30s, Kara Hultgreen. More to the point, the F-15 was performing like a rock star in the middle east They just couldnt accept the F-14 was a flawed plane

Since you can get 2 - 2.5 Gripen for every Typhoon and the maintenance cost would be fair for a larger amout of planes i think it is quite obvious. The shorter strech Gripen needs for take off and to land without extra gadgetry, + that it is built to use straight wider average roads when needed is a great advantage. What happens with the typhoon when its landing tracks get cruise missiled? The Super Hornet, Rafale, and Gripen are all capable of "rough field" conditions. Both the Super Hornet and Rafale (M) can use tail hooks. The Typhoon already has a drag chute installed. The Gripen simply does not need any additional stopping aids. So what shall it be? Retrofit a few runways? Install a (so far untested) drag chute? Procure an aircraft that manages just fine as is? Given the extra costs associated with the first two choices, this really is not much of a choice at all.

The Eurofighter has no problem detecting the Gripen in 90% of scenarios. That said in exercises with the Swedes in mountainous terrain have said that the Gripen's EW suite is excellent and combining it with low flying allowed them to get "alarmingly close". That said those EFs were not installed witht he CAPTOR E AESA radar which brings a large improvement in counter EW. That said there is not really any other advantage the Gripen posesses in the A2A role. The lack of 2 engines hampers the thing's TWR and overall the Eurofighter is a more powerful aircraft. That said the Gripen is an excellent rugged and cheap aircraft thar will do really well in asymmetrical scenarios. Overall its about what each country needs. Sweden spends less than others so the Gripen is an excellent cheap and effective aircraft whilst nations like the UK which spend more on defence can benefit from the more powerful but costly Eurofighter.

@marcouno8850
@marcouno8850 5 лет назад
That is a really hard question to answer. Depends on so many different things. A rough estimate for the Brazilian's Gripens E/F is about U$150 million each, no weapons included. On the other hand there will be a few plants for local production of different parts being setup and a whole technical and logistical chain to support the fighters' operation, making it even cheaper to fly. If there is another batch of fighters, which is planned, the overall cost per unit will drop considerably. The weapons are being acquired outside of the aircraft's contract, are already in inventory or being locally produced. What makes it even harder to determine a final cost. They are yet to choose a BVR missile for the Gripen E/F (locally it will be officially known as F-39), some say it will most likely be the METEOR but there is no official word on that so far. The only contract for a new missile that has been confirmed for them is a batch of IRIS-T and no cost or number of units acquired has been released, as far as I know. I figure the situation for the Typhoon is pretty similar as they have to suit and deal with different countries and their contracts.

Eurofighter is the superior aircraft. The most important difference in flight performance is the flight ceiling. The eurofighter can attain 25% more specific gravitational energy, which can be converted into 12.5% more speed when diving. Also this higher altitude increases the range of the missiles in BVR. They spend more time in thinner air (the drag for the same missile launched from a eurofighter at max altitude is just 62.5% of that for a Gripen) and also have a gravitational potential energy advantage that the missile can convert into kinetic energy when arcing down towards a lower altitude target. Both have similar top speeds, corner speeds, turn rates, range, radar, radar cross section, IRST, etc. They can both carry the same weapons. The most significant difference between the two is cost. You can operate 2.8 gripens per eurofighter. That's 2.8 times more radars in the air, 2.8 times more aircraft for the opponent to contend with, 2.8 times more aircraft to attack while others are defending against missiles.. It's also 1.95 times more missiles in the air for the same amount of money. Couple that with the excellent operational availability and ability to be deployed by dispersed airfield, the gripen does seem like a better purchase.
@__-fm5qv
@__-fm5qv 2 года назад
The Eurofighter is so expensive due to the nature of it being a multi-national project with each country having slightly different needs. This generally stretches the development time and therefore costs of the aircraft. Resulting in a final product that is far more expensive that it really should be.

The UK should buy the SAAB Gripen and use it along its fleet of Typhoons. With 160 Typhoons and soon 148 F-35's, I think even 30 Gripens would be amazing for the RAF. It would also allow for more pilots to be trained increasing the fighter training completion rate

In comparison with the Gripen E, the Typhoon has - up to 50% more engine thrust, leading to better climb rates, higher acceleration and a higher trust-to-weight ratio. - larger wing area, leading to significantly lower wing load which enhances maneuverability and loadout, especially g-forces with loadout - up to 50% higher overall loadout In all honesty: both will get the job done and do share lots of weapon systems like the IRIS-T or the Meteor. And the pricing is the biggest argument for the Gripen because it allows you to have real numbers. But if I were a pilot, facing an advanced Flanker or a late-model Fulcrum in a 1 on 1 fight within visual range, I'd choose the Typhoon over the Gripen in a heartbeat. That extra power and acceleration might just be what you need to get yourself out of a bad situation.
@rokuth
@rokuth 5 лет назад
You forget that the Gripen E is a lighter aircraft than the Typhoon. It can take off from smaller airfields, and has a similar thrust-to-weight ratio as the Typhoon. Both can super-cruise as well. Not to mention that the Typhoon weighs nearly twice as much as a Gripen.
@svenschwingel8632
@svenschwingel8632 5 лет назад
@@rokuth actually, both the Gripen E and the Typhoon need less than 700m for takeoff. Gripen E has an advantage of roughly 50m, the earlier Gripen versions actually need more than the Typhoon. And TWR on the Typhoon is way superior, with 1,18 at typical mission loadout (Gripen E: 0,95) and 0,78 at max. takeoff weigth (Gripen: 0,62). Max. takeoff weigth on the Gripen E is 16100 kg (Typhoon: 23500 kg) so the Typhoon isn't twice as heavy, but 50% heavier at max. loadout.
@svenschwingel8632
@svenschwingel8632 5 лет назад
@Partifakta 2018 the Typhoon is rated at < 700m for takeoff, the Gripen E is rated at ~ 600m. Pretty close if you ask me. Which makes sense because european military doctrine for almost all countries requires combat jets to be able to start from highways if necessary. The Tornado could do that, too.
@svenschwingel8632
@svenschwingel8632 5 лет назад
@Partifakta 2018 the only way the Gripen will take off within 400m is when it's empty. An empty F-15 will take off in 300m btw. The Gripen needs a considerably longer landing strip, compared to the Viggen. Because the Gripen lacks reverse thrusters. The Viggen can even roll in reverse and turn on runways. Wiki rates the required landing strip for both Typhoon and Gripen E at ~ 600m. Which again is in line with european requirements. If you need to take off from highways, you'll also need to be able to land on them.

None of these comparisons are worth much because most air to air engagements today are going to be beyond visual range. And beyond visual range is where electronic warfare, electronic countermeasures, radar cross section, and missiles are king. And most of the ECM, EW, RCS, and Missiles' capabilities are classified, so we CAN'T make an accurate comparison with the limited knowledge we are given. Hell, you can't even use exercise kill ratios to compare fighter jets because the rules of engagement of those exercises aren't disclosed, so they might have an F-35 trying to dogfight a Typhoon within visual range just to see what happens when that's not what the F-35 was designed to do. Or vice versa and have a Typhoon try and slug it out BVR with an F-35, of which it wouldn't be able to do if the F-35 was outside of the detection range of the PIRATE IRST. It doesn't matter how fast a jet can turn or climb when the enemy jet is 100 miles (160 km) away.

Spoke to several Austrian Air Force pilots at Leuchars air show back in 2013. All agreed that Austria should have gone Gripen instead of Typhoon. Austria had a similar requirement as neighbouring Czech Republic and Hungary who went for the Gripen. The astronomical cost both in initial purchase and operating costs per flying hour has resulted in Austria severely reducing the number of pilots current on the type and even then only doing the minimum to retain currency. Twice the initial cost and 4 times the operating costs just for a couple of extra hardpoints and an extra engine to maintain does not make economic sense.

Might have been interresting to note how swiss negelegted to order 20 gripens because in the end their old F-18 still were more flexible for the tasks they needed. Especially the range aka fuel consumption was a big issue. On the other hand Austria is about to skip their Eurofighters for Gripens because the latter ones are not draining their money as much as Eurofighters. In my personal opinion, the best canard wing fighter out there atm is the Rafaele. Much more flexible and powerful than the Gripen, but less expensive than the Eurofighter. Hate to admit it, but the Frenchies did the right thing in leaving the Eurofighter project to built their own fighter.

It was a political issue with the Swiss. The government had decided to go with the Gripen, but according to Swiss laws, this had to be brought up as a public vote. The Swiss public voted against the purchase. In a small country like Switzerland, range was not and issue. Considering that the Gripen and the Hornets have the same engine, fuel consumption was not an issue either.

@@rokuth And considering that the Gripen doesn't have the areodynamics of a brick like The Hornet...yes fuel consumption is not a thing. And the Swiss voted No to *any* new fighter purchase in the near future.

So Basically, D Saab Gripen costs 50% of EuroFighter ( 60 Mil $ - 110Mil $), is 4 times cheaper to Fly& Maintain/hr ( 8000$ *4 - 32000$) compared to Euro so either more sorties or more number's Airbone, Air Combat score of 74% against 75% of Euro( that's 0.9866 ratio of win ) + it takes of Regular roads with least crew, Cheers...

No. JAS-39 costs more to fly than 8000 USD. You are comparing apples to oranges. JAS-39E costs the same as Eurofighter with regards to procurement costs. All fighters can take off from regular roads.

Initially the Eurofighter cost 125 million € per jet. Not sure if that is still current.

also, correction on the south african saabs, to bring them BACK to service is more costly than expected, the SAF however had been having massive funding issues with the tanking of the RAND vs the EURO, overall tho the running cost are fine (the issue was that the SA rand lost so much value it made it hard to get parts etc)
