The Saab Gripen is one of the most remarkable fighter jets of modern aeronautics.
The Gripens is small, light, incredibly advanced, and it has a secret in the tail.

These guys have always been bad ass aircraft engineers and designers. What they've produced over the years has often been ahead of it's time.
@mikevonkleist6767
@mikevonkleist6767 4 года назад
@Libs Hate Montesquieu Very true. Many reasons why things happened. I've studied aviation history for quite some time now. So many different things have taken place and for financial, political and the right thing at the right time and for the right reasons. The Wright brothers were in court a lot for patent infringement cases. Aviation is one amazing thing that mankind accomplished. Everyone wants credit. It was revolutionary in our history. How long have we flown now? 100+ years? Compare that to how long we've dreamt of it.
@mikevonkleist6767
@mikevonkleist6767 4 года назад
But that's all the more reason why they should be appreciated for what they've done. The US has all the resources of the world but these guys don't. The best designers of anything only had their dreams to start with. American aircraft engineers and designers appreciate their Swedish counterparts. Russians too. Aviation technology has always been shared. One way or another. By whatever means. As far as I'm concerned, because of everyone that contributed to flying, it's a modern day miracle. For centuries, mankind envied the birds. No, mellenia.
@mikevonkleist6767
@mikevonkleist6767 4 года назад
Right again. American know how, strategic importance, perceived threat. But without those things, I'm still impressed with what these guys do. Different motivation but good engineering. People have always built on others people's ideas. I'm a mechanic. I wouldn't know anything if it weren't for the other mechanics that taught me.

What should be recognised is how a small country like Sweden has since the mid 1950's, been able to develope and manufactute top quality Mach 2 combat aircraft from its limited technical and manufacturing base, with limited financial means, compared to the USA, Russia, China, France and the UK. For many years European countries have pooled their resources to build combat aircraft (Jaguar/Tornado/Typhoon) and even the F-35 has major contributions from some of the larger overseas purchasers of the aircraft. Yes, they may buy in aircraft and avionics technology, but the core of the aircraft is home grown. In that context it is remarkable what Sweden has done. It may not have the capabilities of the F-22 or even some of the later 4.5 generation fighters but it does well for what the Swedish airforce needs at an affordable price. I take my hat off to Sweden and Saab!

There's this thing they say about Canadian fighter aircraft procurement: Canada is free to buy any fighter jet in the world....as long as it's American. The fighter competition that the Canadian government launched was a public relations exercise to look like they were doing something. Like Dassault, SAAB learnt the hard way that Canada had no intention of even considering the Gripen. Canada preferred instead to waist taxpayer money on 2nd hand Australian F-18s instead of making any serious commitment to a modern fighter. That is the sad truth IMO.

It turns out that Saab cherry-picked its Cost Per Flight Hour statistics on Gripen C/D by only including POL (fuel and oil), not personnel, spares, and associated logistics to come to the $4,700 CPFH that has been constantly cited. That number never made sense to me. During the Swiss Air Force study, they pointed out that their analyses indicated a $21,000 CPFH, Saab then adjusted their number to $10,000 CPFH. It all depends on how someone picks and chooses what costs to include, and which to exclude.

0:26 Fact Errors begin. The Gripen is not the simplest - from an aerodynamic perspective it is the most advanced/radical of the 3 so called Eurocanard designs. You only have to look at the centre of gravity and the size and layout of the canards to understand it. Gripen also has access to tactics the other two don't. Tactics aimed at matching and outcombating more expensive planes.

@Joshua N. Ajang kaveri engine is byproduct of just usa 2 billion dollars we invested in LCA tejas programme. Today we have perfectly working dry kaveri engine for our upcoming very long endurance stealthy weaponized UAVs. Soon we shall invest in high altitude jet engine performance testing facilities may be around usa 3 billion dollars more and we shall get two variants of kaveri engines for our mwf tejas and amca by the time they need first engine change . We have made good progress in single crystal blade tech and high temp material needed to make engine capable of long duration of supercruiz.

Please help clarify: what is the definition of super cruise?
@henrylee4428
@henrylee4428 4 года назад
Nick Emerson Hi Nick, thanks for your reply on the definition. I agree with you in general, but it should be stricter. Most of the fighter can accelerate with afterburner (AB) to supersonic and then turn the AB off and can sustain supersonic for a while (not sure how long). This cannot be seen as super cruise. I think there must be criteria like, (a) accelerate without AB to supersonic, (b) sustain supersonic without AB for x minute and (c) faster than Mach 1.4 (?) , etc... For (c) I make a question mark as I am not sure about this. Some say the lower super cruise limit is at Mach 1.1, other say the lower limit is at Mach 1.4, so I was searching for a commonly agreed definition for super cruise.

@@PhilbyFavourites just saying gripen is not particularly capable when compared to legacy fighters. It's agile and can supercruise in extremely light configurations, but it's payload, range, thrust to weight, and avionics offer little more than an F-16 block 52. Even the Gripen NG is this way. I don't see how these people compare gripen to an F-35. Wanna know why gripen isnt selling? Because if you wanna replace old legacy fighters, use that money to replace it with something that represents a large leap in capability, not an equevelant jet like gripen. F-35 aren't even hanger queens, they have mission capable rates better than F-15 and approaching F-16. Improving year by year as with all new fighters. I hate trump, but say whatever you like. I just refute these goons who constantly bash the F-35 despite knowing jack shit.

@@EEEEEEE354 the f-35 is definitely a very capable fighter, much more so than what online commentators claim. That said, so is the gripen. For instead, the F16 has nothing on the Gripen E when it comes to BVR, RCS, agility etc. For the recorded excercises, the Gripen vs F-16 kill ratio is something like 5 to 1, or better,, and that’s for the A and C versions.

Gripen actually doesn’t have relaxed instability, it is an inherent negative instability. Sort of a plane flying backwards. The canard contribute to the negative lift. Hence almost no induced drag when turning.

Millennium 7 * HistoryTech How is your Swedish? There are some interviews done with SAAB engineers describing the challenges during development. The instability is mentioned in the context of instability, not relaxed instability. The Lift added by the canard make it unstable. It is also mentioned an analogue channel, disconnecting the canard, making Gripen stable as a redundancy safety precaution.
