We all know about the late Queen Mum - one of Britain’s most instantly recognisable figures. But few have even heard of the Queen’s mother-in-law, Princess Alice. And yet, the life story of Prince Philip’s mother almost defies belief.
A great granddaughter of Queen Victoria, Prince Philip’s mother married into the Greek royal family - only to see the Greek monarchy overthrown by revolution. Fleeing into exile, she suffered a severe nervous breakdown. She was locked away in mental hospitals and subjected to experimental treatments by psychiatrists - including Sigmund Freud himself. The trauma had a shattering effect on Princess Alice’s marriage and led to a fractured childhood for her only son Prince Philip.
Philip’s mother eventually fought her way back from mental illness, and became an unlikely hero of World War Two - risking her life to hide a Jewish family from the Nazis. When her son married the future Queen Elizabeth in 1948, Alice turned down the option of a cosy royal life. Instead she chose to dedicate herself to working with the poor in Greece, gave away all her possessions and even founded her own religious order.
Featuring exclusive interviews with family members and previously unseen archive footage, this film sheds new light on one of the royal family’s most remarkable but little known personalities.

Did you know that her mother was Princess Victoria Alberta Elisabeth Mathilde Marie of Hesse and by Rhine? Princess Victoria was the daughter of Princess Alice Maud Mary of the UK. And her younger sister Princess Louise of Battenberg, later Lady Louise Mountbatten, was Queen of Sweden.

Today, her psychological symptoms would possibly have been identified as typical posttraumatic stress symptoms of death people, caught during her experiences in the field, or while experiencing the danger of death for her husband, and family. There is no need of having had hidden sexual conflicts at all (and no matter if so). What an injustice, and pain, a disaster, caused by lack of knowledge in society of the time... which affected Alice, and her son, so deeply. What a blessing that she had her strong faith. Otherwise she would have left broken. She is a role model for me in many aspects. My deepest respect, in all humility, and gratitude for her, her son, and all who fought against the NS regime. Greetings from Germany

I agree. Years ago, if you were different in any way, such as deaf or even eccentric, you could quite often be locked away to prevent embarrassment to the family. Case in point, Rosemary Kennedy. She refused to conform to the edicts of her father and was rather a freewheeling spirit. She was outspoken and frequently in trouble at boarding school. Her father decided to have her lobotomized and she wound up a mentally deficient in a "zombie-like" state and was institutionalized for the rest of her life. Criminal in my book.

@inkyguy
@inkyguy 4 года назад
Emma Burgess Dean, to some degree, but is more the ignorance and stigmatization of mental illness that causes fear. For instance, very few people are locked up, and certainly not in asylums. What the U.S. does is leave the seriously mentally ill without access or knowledge of mental health care and then imprisons them in a system of mass incarceration when they inevitably break the law. It is estimated that a third of those incarcerated in the U.S. suffer from untreated mental illness. Another large portion suffer from a serious learning disability, but we opt to spend *_on average_* $40,000 per year per prisoner rather than on education and mental health care.

Zoren Andongo, remember that "The Crown," is drama based to some degree on history, but it is not a historical documentary. Its producers and writers would be the first to acknowledge that as a drama its primary goal is to be entertaining and compelling, not to communicate historical events or accurate portrayals of the people involved in historical events. The story serves the drama; the drama is not written to portray accurate history.

Zoren Andongo There are numerous anachronisms in THE CROWN while the series did try to show a side of the Royals having their own faults. I did like how Anne was protrayed being the only one to take the time hear her gran's side. I doubt the Windsors will ever tell a more accurate details due to time, generations, seeing what they want to see, and personal demons.

Then they probably filled his head with all kinds of stories as to why she "disappeared." Being locked up in an asylum where they most likely gave her electric shock treatments (I worked in a psychiatric ward as a student nurse) must have been utterly traumatic for her; not to mention all those crazy men in their white coats. What a tragedy for her own mother the send her to a mental hospital and poor Philip as a child. It awful sometimes when people go through stressful times and they either get sick or suffer from PTSD and major depression. They said she had paranoid schizophrenia and I'm not so sure that she had that. She sounds a bit delusional but a lot of that could be brought on by stress because of the war and everything that occurred when they had to flee the country. Alice was not ever like that before. Well, in one way, pitiful, her mother committed her to a mental institution, husband abandoned her, she missed the important events of her daughters' lives and a major chunk of Philip's childhood. These losses could never be restored. But on the other hand, she created a full & satisfying life once left alone to do what (it appears) she was meant to do. So yes pitiful in a way but ultimately triumphant. P.S. why shouldn't a nun smoke & play Canasta dammit.

She overcame her deafness by learning to lip read in several languages! She put up with royal life, wars, exiles, etc etc!! No wonder she struggled! What’s amazing is that she came out of the abuse suffered in mental hospitals and went on to rescue the Cohen family from the nazis!! She was kept from being the mother she wanted be, yet was able to help so many others! It’s a shame that she wasn’t celebrated for her many good deeds until after her passing. God bless her soul. ✨

Hiding Jews at the cost of her own life, wow! How beautiful! May we all be so brave when the time comes! She seemed to find true authentic joy as evidenced in the pictures when she devoted her life solely to serve others! Her smile in her Nun clothing was dazzling and she didn't seem to smile in any other royal photos, even when she went back to live in the palace with Philip. She had her troubles to be sure, but serving others gave her so much joy. May that be a testimony to all of us, including all future royals! You had an amazing Mother Prince Philip. What a truely great, independent, compassionate, lovely woman! She continually gave of herself, her heart! This is such a fascinating story. She was a true servant of the people.
