The Digimon series and movies are a part of the nostalgia landscape for many Millennials, but in the face of our broken internet, they show us a greater truth. Digimon captures the vision of our ideas of the early internet as a place of hope, connection and democracy. The Digimon are a metaphor for the internet and their human partners represent humanity, together their partnerships represent how the internet is supposed to run on our feelings and values. The same way that the Digimon fight for their world and humanity with their human partners, the internet runs on our emotions. The things that make us human, in their world, are not diminished by technology but further technology and the cause of helping other humans. This was reflected in the internet of the time as a place of weird authenticity and uniqueness. But now it has morphed into a place of performance and perfection, unrecognizable from it's original form. Digimon shows us how, if we view the internet as a place for humans to be original and creative, if we view ourselves as partners with technology, we can get some of that beauty that began the internet back.
