The Dirty Birds | The History of the Atlanta Falcons, Part 4

The thing to know about the Falcons is that they defy expectations at every turn. After the circus of the early-to-mid 1990s, they’d completely bottomed out and cleaned house. Now they found themselves with a head coach in his last stop before retirement, a running back who’d nearly went undrafted, and a journeyman quarterback who had never even appeared in a playoff game. What better time to make a Super Bowl run?
This is part four of a seven-part series.
Written and hosted by Jon Bois and Alex Rubenstein
Directed by Jon Bois
Produced by Alex Rubenstein
Additional contributions by Joe Ali
Rights specialist Lindley Sico
Secret Base executive producer Will Buikema
Secret Base managing editor Ryan Nanni
Corrections:
11:00 - This is addressed in the video itself, but it’s such a crucial error that it bears additional mention here. That player who was selected with pick number 196 and rushed for 2,008 yards did so in this very season, 1998. He was Terrell Davis, who, of course, the Falcons met in the Super Bowl. We don’t acknowledge him in the voiceover script because we planned on revealing him in a segment that we later decided to cut.
11:05 - Same story here: we were going to switch this out with a new chart after the Terrell Davis reveal that never happens. In fact, it’s Terrell Davis, who took the ball 481 times in 1997, who beats out Jamal Anderson’s all-time carries record by one.
26:00 - “Percentages percentage”? Good work, Jon.
47:05 - The Y-axis labels are misplaced here. The top vertical gridline represents .900.

It probably wasn't the worst week ever by a team leading up to a Super Bowl (Oakland at Super Bowl XXXVII with the team revolting against Bill Callahan and the Barret Robbins incident probably takes the crown), but between the plane incident and Eugene Robinson, this has to be a close second

It’s a perfect example of “the scoreboard doesn’t tell the whole story”. That super bowl could’ve gone down as one of the all time classics if the Falcons had converted more of their opportunities. It had all the makings of a shootout like super bowl 52 except one team converted their chances and the other (who arguably created more chances) didn’t.

As a Viking fan, it was clear to me Vikings were the obvious other choice for Dorktown NFL team. Ever since 7 year old me cried when Gary Fucking Anderson decided to miss, they've been an intriguing, if not infinitely frustrating team. And they were even more tortured before I was born. In some ways, it was the more obvious story, and I think they did well to avoid it. Sidenote, the Suns will be the NBA team of choice if/when they visit the NBA.
@hbdragon88
@hbdragon88 2 года назад
@@pwndnoob4937 you think the Suns would be the most interesting/cursed NBA team to have a multi-part series? Hmm. I mean at least they've had a couple of Finals appearances and the 7SOL team with Mike D'Antoni and Steve Nash. But a Dorktown series wouldn't be a "Collapse" or "Untitled" episode, so it's not all fails and close calls. I kinda wonder if the Clippers would be a good subject. mostly though they've just been straight awful for 30 years (draft busts, Sterling's interference, etc.). I'd love to see some deep dives into their 2006 playoffs run and Lob City onwards (maybe a Collapse episode?), not sure if it would be a Dorktwon series though.

I’m a Vikings fan in Minnesota but was also raised a Broncos fan by my dad who’s from Colorado. The 1998 season is so weirdly conflicting for that reason, but as heartbreaking as the Vikings loss was it still came to a satisfying end in the Super Bowl. The Broncos were just finishing off the Falcons like the Vikings couldn’t, and after going through the playoffs expecting to face the Vikings at the end of it, they got to have a little fun with a team that really shouldn’t have been there in the first place.

That is the best way to put it, the Falcons put their all in a David vs Goliath story for the championship game. Then, completely exhausted and beaten down they would have had to beat yet another Goliath. My frustration isn't even fully with my Vikings not going to the Superbowl, I felt like we had been robbed of possibly one of the greatest Superbowls ever and were instead given the Broncos playing around with a chewtoy for 60 minutes.
