(see video for example) Convective Inhibition is best described as a layer of warm air just above the surface that prevents a rising parcel of air to be unstable. For storms to develop, you want the air surrounding the rising parcel to continuously be lower and drier to promote buoyancy. Sometimes a cap can be good, IF the instability can erode and explode through it, promoting vigorous updrafts, like taking a lid off of a pot of boiling water. This pot had hardly any water in it, and was barely simmering where I was. And the lid was too heavy.
