Episode 3 of In Search of Giants: Dr Brian Cox takes us on a journey through the history of particle physics. In this episode we learn how Ernest Rutherford conducted a historical experiment that revealed that most of the mass of an atom is concentrated in a tiny nucleus made of protons and neutrons.
This film is part of a series originally broadcast on Teachers' TV (www.teachers.tv/video/23645).
The series was made with the support of The Science and Technology Facilities Council (www.scitech.ac.uk).

1.1 ROA: The nucleus was later on discovered by Ernest Rutherford in 1911. Rutherford undergone the so called gold foil experiment to identify the nucleus. Rutherford thought that the alpha particles would pass right through but after several times, some of it bounced back. His experiment basically demonstrates the nature of what the atomic structure is.

the human mind continues to amaze me that even when tech was not yet "high" rutherford was still able to discover one of the greatest discoveries in the world that helped humanity later. it shows to tell us that we dont have to be techno-dependent, but it's more of the question of the mind.
