The ultimate irony of those psychotic Columbine kids is that Doom guy would never and has never taken an innocent life and those games are about Space Marine killing demons. The fact that they drew any comparison between demons and the people around them alone shows you how unwell they were and my heart goes out to the victim's families
It’s a common thing, like all those WADS that swap sprites and SFX to change the demons into humans or in particular racial stereotypes. Basically demons are a good stand in because morally killing them is good, satisfying/purifying even. It attracts extremist abstractions due to its ultra violent nature. It’s like a go-ahead or encouragement
Being the devil attorney althought they were horible people that put a question on how our society treat people who need mental help.... After all they considered people aroud them to demons
@@kyuketsukirook for real? It’s funny I originally thought Postal 2 was a source engine mod or stand alone game lol. It seemed so Garry Moddy. Then I found out that it came out earlier lol.
Man, you went deep on this whole thing. I can tell you that while you feel conflicted about the Columbine aspect, it happened and it was part of life. That said, you were very respectful and very objective about providing the information and facts you found in your research. I was in high school near there at the time that happened and played Doom, Quake, Mortal Kombat, and anything else that was uber violent and was immediately labeled as "one of those kids". Games like Doom that have been around for years and have garnered such a strong following will always come under fire and so will all of us who play them. I will say that learning about all the references in the game and the history and lore is pretty damn awesome and you kicked ass on this!
The impact of Columbine is hard to describe unless you were alive during that time. The 90s was a fairly optimistic decade. It was the last decade of the millennium and people were wondering what the 21st century was going to bring (besides Y2K). We had a thriving economy. Even though there were political camps, there was still a great deal of unanimity. The internet was coming into its own. More and more people were owning computers and cellphones. The fun, but childish, console wars between Nintendo and Sega. Video games in general were getting better, sitcoms were still the rage, a new trilogy of Star Wars was coming out... The scandal involving Bill Clinton didn't really damage that optimism. And the tragedies that riddled the 90s in the US like: the first terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in 1993, the Oklahoma City Bombing in 1995, and the Thurston High School shooting in 1998, didn't seem to rattle that optimism very much either. But Columbine... Columbine had a chilling effect. It just seemed uniquely shocking and evil. Maybe because it was 11 months after Thurston? Or maybe because the stories that came out of Columbine were unnerving? That event changed everything when it came to schools. More safety drills. Zero tolerance for toy guns -- even if they were lime green translucent squirt guns, G. I. Joe finger length gun accessories, or Nerf guns that shot foam arrows. Teachers, administrators, and counselors going overboard on students who say "I'll k--- you" in a moment of anger. A culture of fear was developed in the schools and it was never really reversed. Just like the effects of 9/11 on the airlines were never reversed.
Reading your post mentioning 9/11 in relation to Columbine, it never really hit me before just how close the dates of those two tragedies are. Columbine, an horrific incident that, as you say brought about an end to the sense of optimism throughout the 90's, followed barely 2 years later by an event that the world is still feeling the effects of.
@@yetanotheruser1989 They say it's to keep people 'safe', I think it's raising people to live in fear and mindlessly obey authorities, and it's been happening increasingly little by little right under people's noses.
the comment about DOOM looking 'realistic' back in the 90s, reminds me of how my dad would go on about how great and life-like the mountains in the game's skyboxes looked.
I contacted Adrian Carmack about the hanged people sprites, here's what he said: "Those were created by Kevin Cloud. From what I remember it’s a GI Joe that he scanned in with our camera and kept them large to keep the detail. Artistic License. :)" I asked him about the uncompressed photos, he said Kevin Cloud may have them. Kevin Cloud has not yet gotten back to me.
Video games are fictional, not real, people who do awful things like shoot-up schools are mentally unwell, but people still live in the past so they blame it on video games instead of society's failure to help these people
@@maxav1-exePretty sure it's the evangelicals and conservatives blaming video games for desocialization. Your average conversation with your Grandmother could prove that much to you. The only Feminist I've ever seen complain about video games was that Anita chick and she hasn't been relevant in 10 years.
no disturbing doom facts is complete without that particular high school event, as saddening as it is. it takes guts to even mention it by name in public nowdays.
Awesome video! There's something midnight didn't point out in the video so I'll add it as a little bonus - The music in map 23 of doom 2 is based on a song called "Them Bones" by Alice in Chains
I mean that makes sense I mean E1M1 in Classic Doom is a remixed 8 bit version of Master of Puppets from Metallica but that should be obvious just from the tune
I love these Doom videos a lot, they're so useful to know the doom lore etc. And i didn't knew that the images of the bodies were of Mussolini (wich i know very well as an Italian) These videos are so interesting, keep it up! Great work!
My profile picture is "Burning Man" from an artist called Eric Drooker. Maybe - just like the Archvile - this also is a reference to someone being burned on a cross... ... or the picture itself is a reference to the Archvile, which would be totally awesome!
Man the whole story of Harris and Dillon is sad to me since they just blamed it on video games not any mental illnesses or anything like that and their case is not the first either so many people who did shootings who were actually suffering from something whether that be bullying or just mental problems were just roles out as video games did this and that because they were wearing the game brand t shirt yada yada even in modern society it is still present witch just makes me sick knowing people wouldn't want to take a deep dive and find the actual cause. Instead they would point to the thing they think is the issue cause they have no knowledge on it or just don't like it
Nuts.wad can be beaten without killing all the enemies. The hanged textures and sprites are not based on a WW2 execution, but rather photographs of hanged G.I. Joe dolls.
Thank you for this historical video, Midnight! The fact that this video was demonitized is a shame, because it's important history, and if we don't know our history then we're doomed to repeat it.
Midnight, this kind of videos are the reason I watch your videos, I mean, you are an exelent researcher and all the facts and the way you are showing them at us, you're a pro, Jeep the good work
I'm amazed how much research you did on layer 9, I knew about the "lost wad" but I didn't know all the other stuff. It just shows how deeply disturbed the perpetrators were. I'm excited to see what the Eternal iceberg will be like. I remember hearing how Mick Gordon created the Hell language used in the demonic chants you hear in the tracks "Prayer of the Diminished", as well as the track that features a Hell chant cover of the original Doom's track "Sinister", and the track that plays throughout the Doom Hunter mission. He apparently created the language by taking the names of countless demons across all kinds of religions, lnaguages, and mythologies and breaking the names down into individual syllables, and used it to create a fictional language that would specifically be used in the Soundtrack. In addition, the man who performed the chant, is a what's known as an Octavist, an individual who is known for being able to pitch their voice far lower than the average person when singing, even more intriguing is that there was no effects applied to his voice while it was recorded, meaning that with a combination of environmental layout, it was able to make him sound as if there was an entire chorus of demons singing it in unison.
One thing you need to consider about the graphics thing is that most of us didn't have 20+ inch displays at the time. My first PC in 92 came with a 14" CRT, which is better suited to lower resolutions than big displays as it won't result in such large pixels.
This was a great video. Big thumbs up for the history lesson. Please do more like this in the future. It was a great change of pace and definitely entertaining.

There may be an explanation for the hate in the comment section for Seizure Doom. Not an excuse, but an explanation. I've been playing WADs since the early-mid 00's, and a few names since then became infamous within the Doom community. Doomguy 2000, the creator of Seizure Doom, was one of these infamous names. By the time he released Seizure Doom, he already built up a bad reputation for himself with the stuff he would release. Much of his work consisted of either Terry WADs or more seizure-inducing "maps" and "demos." The sad part is, it was clear that he had deep technical knowledge of the Doom engine and how to manipulate it to do cool things, but he would just squander his talent all on pointless stupidity and assaults on the senses. Joke WADs can be hilarious, and even fun to play. However, almost none of Doomguy 2000's projects were like that. With one or two possible exceptions, they're just not fun. Through a certain lens, they could almost be seen as some sort of nihilistic insult toward the player. In a, "Haha, I made something deliberately horrible and I got you to care about it! I win!" sort of way. Many of his WADs just had that terrible vibe, while others just seemed more like sh1tposts in WAD form or failed tech demos. Still wastes of time, but somehow not quite as awful. I think this is what made people so mad. That doesn't excuse the death threats, but it's understandable why people were generally so frustrated with Doomguy 2000. He was wasting everyone's time when he could've been making amazing stuff. While others are also guilty of this, everyone was getting sick of *his* crap in particular. After a while, people stopped giving him attention. Rightfully so. TL, DR: The creator of Seizure Doom was already infamous for making other unplayable joke WADs and obnoxious "tech demos" while rarely ever putting his talents to good use. That's probably why there's so much nasty stuff in his comment sections. Edit: emphasis
@@henryfleischer404 Terry WADs are maps which appear normal at first. After a few minutes or so, the player is led into what's called a Terry Trap. This is the part where the gameplay abruptly stops, the sounds are nothing but earrape, the Zdoom text fills the screen with sex jokes, and the player character is stuck in a rapid loop of scripted death and resurrection. The "Terry" in question is a collective pseudonym for anyone who makes these maps.
That got pretty dark at the end. Its very uncomfortable when someone does this crap. Forget the line between the imaginary and the real world, and start depriving people their basic humanity. He wasn't a battle hardened marine. He was a very mentally ill person. As hard as it was to defend DOOM in that debacle was, I think them documenting themselves and how out of touch with reality are everyone who played violent video games are seen violent video games knew this was not normal. This wasn't a fantasy and this not proper line of thinking. I think as repulsive as all the tapes are they told the whole story and it was alot more than just a violent video game made them do it. It was broken minds. It's something we can keep a better eye out for now, and we all know its not the game. It was really hard to fathom at the time but it was actually more prevalent back then than it is now believe it or not. School incidents I mean.
Well doesn't help that police took 4-6 hours to get to the school with any sort of force. I am not sure there were any protocols for a shooting in the schools at that time either. However, the other side of it was that no one seemed to care that this was going on. More or less negligence than the game or gun manufacturer's fault. The parents seeming to not care. Then the police, The FBI all these organizations with funding... yet to let a massacre to happen? Never mind that the gov has it a mandatory no guns zone in public schools only making it a more appetizing target.
Doing a little bit of research did help me understand that the police got sidetracked... but still think an active shooter would have gotten at least a few officers there to start.
@@ChopsWildRide Well it seems that it is just the start of these school deletings and really to push that games are bad...but then again... What has happened. We went from pixels to nearly real looking things in games. But it also comes down to the individual. And that there is no moral compass for people like this... they just plan out to go out in a blaze of "Glory" Taking out a lot of others before their deletion... It is the same with any and all mass deletings as they want to cause a scene and what better way than to delete several others before their self deletion or deletion by cop. But it also shows a disturbing track record as Schools have those no guns allows on school property signs... yet ever school deleings those guns come onto the property somehow. And these mass deletings happen over and over, with the only thing happening being "Ban the guns" Which wouldn't stop any of these mass deletions since there are other various methods to do it. Also shows that the people in charge of it don't want to harden schools, no increased police presences at the schools, no arming of teachers, or having anyone with a gun on the school property with the idea of defending the place. So this gets to happen over... and over again. Having to rely on police to show up. once again showing that when they are really needed. They are a long time in waiting. Minutes to hours away... And heck Uvalde is a showing of how much the government really cares about public safety.
@@ChopsWildRide Yep exactly can't remove rights if you don't brainwash the next generation that they don't need those rights. if they are being actively used to protect them. Not to mention can't get public outrage if the crisis don't happen. So two birds one stone... while the Satanists gets their free sacrifice to their underworld gods
Nice to know that DOOM solidified the execution of Mussolini in it's minor details. I've always felt the DOOMSLAYER was a force of good against all the evils of the world.
Just seen these videos, I’m glad they’re still up. IMO I feel you were very respectful regarding layering 9, it was educational (for me anyways) and I hope you weren’t demonetized, it’s history no matter what anyone wants to say, and if we’re restricted on discussing history in an unbiased manner as you did, then we are truly lost as a society.
Layer 9 resonates like hell because back in 1999 I was in middle school at the time and due to a few interest similarities between Harris and me there were calls at the catholic school I attended to expel me purely based on the similarities our interests back and I was held under a microscope till I moved on to highschool. A lot of people dont realize that it wasn't just the games that were vilified, but also the players of the games.
"It will crash your PC...." Sure if you have a potato from 2011. I played the 300k and several variations .wad, don't think my PC even noticed a game was playing.
About Bennito: I may not remember correctly, but some time ago, one of the developers revealed, that the hanging corpse sprite is actually just G. I. Joe dolls dressed up and hanged. The mo' you know
For our final 9th grade history project, we were split into groups of 3 and had to research 2 historical events each, one group covered the columbine shootings, and i was surprised when you said doom was supposedly related to that, since the group (who did cover their personalities and how they acted) never mentioned that harris played video games
there were signs that something like that was going to happen (harris and klebold's blogs) and if the police did search their houses, that could have been stopped.
The columbine wad isnt lost everyone say so too, I have played it and its indeed pretty impresive what he manage to do, he was a talented dude using the build engine sadly, he went full on gamer moment.
Provide or it didn't happen. No evidence has been found that the wad ever actually existed. It's a rumor, likely made up by anti-gaming ambulance chaser attorney to push the narrative.
FFS! I totally forgot about that last WAD... When someone is sick in the head, they'll use anything from their life as inspiration, their imagination will merge with the real and what they draw upon has nothing to do with the fact that they were sick to begin with. Luckily, over the years, so many studies have proven the actual benefits of video games, even violent ones, providing an outlet for a person's feelings and help prevent people from acting out their negative emotions in the real world.
Bruh...they blamed the video games... I'm pretty sure if your kid can't handle the game and volience, then you shouldn't let him play it, it makes me sad and sick when people blame video games instead of their shitty parenting
The Columbine High School shooting was a tragic incident that occurred on April 20, 1999, in Columbine, Colorado, USA. Two senior students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, opened fire on their classmates, killing 12 students and one teacher, and injuring many others. The shooting lasted for around 40 minutes before the two students committed suicide. The incident shocked the world and led to debates about gun control laws, school safety, and mental health issues. The Columbine High School shooting is considered one of the deadliest school shootings in US history and had a profound impact on the nation's approach to school safety and gun violence prevention.
Oh damn, this released yesterday? Time to put aside all my other plans for the next 23 minutes! Edit: also I think the thing about the flesh textures "being dead animals" _might_ be to do with the fact that Doom's intestine texture is, in fact, a modified image of a pile of snakes. Not sure of their status, though.
Eric Harris is on the thumbnail, very spooky. Edit: amazing video. I think that the "Lost" wad from Harris never existed really, i always thought that is a just a myth which surrounds all this tragedy just for pure morbous. I mean, if you think about it, it was the only lost wad from him, how curious is that?
There are actually about 5 lost WADs from Harris, which are: -Techout -Assault -Trasher -Realdeth (That's how it's spelled) The 5th WAD is kind of a mistery. In every text file that Harris embedded with his other (known) WADs he talks about REALDOOM.WAD, which is a multi-level patch. The problem is that you had to ask Harris (via e-mail) to send you the WAD, in order to get it. We don't know anything about REALDOOM, except for the fact that it has multiple levels and it's probably a patch for Realdeth. A lot of people speculate that this is the infamous WAD that simulated the shooting
@@gianluco Thanks for putting the names correctly and for correct my mistake in this case. I forgot that he made more besides realdeth. I'm still think that he never made a true recreation of the Columbine's school; i want to believe that it's just another reason which media (or at least a conservative part of the population) of the USA uses just for throwing garbage to videogames, especially the most violent ones. And yeah, it seems that this dude was a hardcore doom player and had some deep mental ilness, but i still think that everything about Realdeth (or Realdoom) sounds suspicioulsy coincident to be true. I mean, it's higly possible and i can't deny that those wads really existed, but i'm refuse to believe that he made a wad recreating his future school shooting. But well, who knows?
@@gianluco That's a good question. As far i saw it, his mapping skills are very beginners (i tested some of his Deathmatch stuff and UAC Labs), far from doing something really professional (and yes, i'm aware that we are talking about 99' and we got back then some really good stuff for Doom) but when i think more about it i ended in the same place, for me this dude never did something like this lol
@@Samm0th There's accounts of his friend watching Harris play the school wad, apparently it was not the whole school but merely part of it. It was never uploaded to the internet from what I know
I respect your time and effort in researching these things and making these videos, but especially when talking about things connected to real life, it's important to be triply sure you have your facts straight. A couple of the things in here presented as true are not so: The Nirvana thing has been confirmed by Sandy Petersen (the level's designer) as just a coincidence. The Mussolini thing is also not true - Adrian Carmack notes "those were created by Kevin Cloud. From what I remember it’s a GI Joe that he scanned in with our camera and kept them large to keep the detail. Artistic License. :)". There is also no confirmed existence of the map recreation of Columbine High School, and the FBI found no corresponding maps on his PC when his files were investigated. Doom's engine also can't do floors over floors, so a multi-level high school like Columbine couldn't be accurately recreated anyway. It may have existed at some point, or Harris may have simply lied to the people he told about having a map of the school in Doom, but there's no way to know for sure now.
I don't know but its kinda an unpopular opinion of mine is that doom Is back in the days the most Christian game you can play...i mean come on you kill demons. On one RU-vid channel a British pastor played that game and liked it... So it's not satanic game or else.
Still gotta love people overreacting and criticizing a seizure inducing troll wad that already gives an explicit warning for you not to play it if you have seizures
it is not specifically videogames that cause violence, it is just media in general that causes it. so basically like 50% of the internet can be blamed for some bad acts.
Even though i was birn in the early 2000's but hearing colobine high school makes me feel so sorry for the victims, parents and people who witnessed. Respecr to the 12 students and 1 teacher and i will not forget the injured
