For me, it's pretty obvious that one game looks better than the other. Looks better is definitely a subjective topic, but personally I feel the downgrade is real. The Division 2 isn't a bad looking game. It just doesn't look as nice and as clean as the The Division. I still think the original game is one of the best and most impressive games of the generation. I appreciate you guys watching The Division graphics vs The Division 2 graphics comparison. I really wanted to give some quick thoughts and you can feel free to give yours. Maybe I need to see more areas in the Division 2, and that may be true, but the game still runs worse than The Division as well. There is not only a visual factor but also a performance factor with The Division vs The Division 2. Thanks for watching!

Bruh THANK YOU. I've been watching hella videos and streams of this game and it seems like no one wants to point this out, it's like they're affraid of saying it. Sure it might be slightly superior to the first one on a technical level and the gameplay does feel a lot better but OMG the overall look of the art style, lighting and textures just makes the game look bad when you put it next to the first one, and I know the location has a lot to do with it but it just feels like they could've done a better job. I'm still looking foward to playing the heck out of it though. A lot of people beg to differ, which I think is kinda weird but I guess it all comes down to preference.

The 1st time I played the division on pc my mind was blown by the visuals. Every aspect from the lighting and particle effects to the geometry and attention to detail in the environment. I did not have that same feeling playing the beta to the sequel. The only thing that stood out to me was that murky green water and the garbage floating in it. I'll have to really spend more time in it and see different time of day scenarios to really decide whether it's a downgrade though

The Division (1) utilizes many more particle effects frequently and as a result they can also display their volumetric lighting tech to a much more frequent and widespread degree. Besides, winter always looks "better" in most cases due to the fact that there is more contrast in colors and detail.

I grew up in Manhattan, when I first played Division1 and it was a night scene with snow falling it brought back vivid memories of living in New York. It was amazing, i lived on First Ave and the detail and care taken in reproducing the streets was amazing, 2 years later and Division 2 does none of that, looks like Far Cry in Washington. What the hell happened? The game engine if anything had to of been improved the last 2 years, coning out in 2 weeks so this is pretty much what you'll get, I have a pc w/everything maxed, breaks my heart, and as the reviewer said I'll probably buy it also, had over 200 hours in Division 1, doubt I'll hit that with 2. It's like eating bad pizza, it's still pizza and your going to eat it.

Funny you say this. Me too, I lived on 8th ave between 45th and 46th st. Now I live in Florida......... But after playing D1 I wanted to go back to NYC but the wife wouldnt buy into it. But yes they did a great job detailing NYC. D2 is fun game but the over grown BS is so played out. They need to make a patch or DLC with snow in DC

I believe the disappointment is not in the game itself, but the fact that 5 years ago, not everyone could afford a full 4k TV, a TV with standard definition didn't bring out the true beauty of the environment.

I agree. I don't think it's just a change of enviroment due to the history of the second game. Perhaps this serves as an excuse to mask comparisons. There is clearly a lack of coherence in the global illumination of D2. The impression it gives is that there is always a flashlight aimed at the characters, no matter how dark the environment is. It is as if the ambient light source does not interact well with the figures (people, cars, buildings, ground, vegetation, etc.). It is not immersive lighting. Not to mention the skin shading of the characters, it looks like a PS2 game.

I've over 200hrs on PC @1440p clocked on DV2.. good times. I picked up DV1 for free at the weekend on the Ubisoft giveaway. I was genuinely surprised at how well DV1 looked and played. I think DV2 graphics look a little muddy is some areas in comparison. Both worth a look

I noticed this during the closed beta and couldn't believe what I was looking at. I've never seen a direct sequel, from the same company, come out with worse graphics than its predecessor. And that's on top of the graphics not being as good as what was shown at E3 2018. I feel bad for the people who feel so defensive of it that they have to say "it's just a beta" as if the graphics will be somehow be improved at launch.

I've seen a lot of things in sequels. Poor design decisions. Gameplay changes that weren't needed. Rarely do you see a sequel have worst graphics than the game before it.

Huge Division 1 fan. I probably put 400 hrs into it. Everything about the sequel from graphics to gameplay feels off. It lost its eerie-ness of the first. Of course it might just be all the betas I've tried. But they lost me as a day one player. I'll definitely buy it, but it might be a year from now.

Bro. Should I be playing division 1 instead of division 2? I have a copy of division 1 and I'm level 17 (basically new) and I like New York atmosphere over W,DC Should I save $60 and just play on division 1? Or should I buy division 2 and start fresh with everyone. Your opinion?

@@paullee5196 I'd say if you already have D1 play it for a bit. You haven't quite hit the endgame. Practice on your builds and see what you like. Play Survival too, its fantastic and challenging. People might drop from the game to move on to the next, but that shouldn't make you move on yet. Play with randoms. I met a ton of great people. There's a lot of game in D1. Main game, underground, survival, darkzone, the incursions...play it and have fun. Give 2 a few months atleast to get the bugs out.

The original game had next to no foliage and that's really the difference to me, it almost looks like they're using the same assets on stuff like trees from AC Odyssey which had a odd blurring effect. If they replaced these textures or blur with something higher res even if it meant decreasing the amount of it i bet it would look a lot better. I did play some of the Dark Zone in the closed beta and that area looks a lot better though, lots of smoke & the lighting the area pop.

Yeah. I'll still pick it up at some point because I really enjoyed the original game. The controls and overall gameplay feel a little better in Division 2 as well. It's really fun with a friend or two.

Something tells me it’s because of the winter effect, because whenever there’s snow in GTA online I get the same feeling that it looks much better than it normally does, same with the Division and it’s sequel

I think the cold environment and the atmosphere helped make the game look better. The bright summery look of D2 kind of exposes that the graphics aren't that crazy. Not bad graphics, but not great. I was expecting some improvements, and the fact that there are none plus the loss of the strong atmosphere make it seem as though it's actually a downgrade

You know, I wouldn't even mind a graphics downgrade if the game looked at all improved from the original. By that I mean bigger, more open areas or more enemies on screen. I haven't really tuned that much into the beta and we don't know what the final game will offer, but so far it doesn't look to be doing any of those things. I don't really mind some reduced graphics for more focus on gameplay, but the game doesn't really have any of the things I mentioned. With that said, I don't think the game looks bad per se, but it's pretty jarring how good the first game looks in comparison considering it came out back in 2016. To be honest, this whole game kind of feels like a rush job on Ubisoft's part which I really hope doesn't affect the final product because for what it's worth, I think the first game had a solid foundation, but it took way to long to get it to where it needed to be. The second, however, looks to be trying to improve that with free updates, raids, and DLC so hopefully they can make it work.

I believe you're correct. Vegetation is a huge burden on the GPU. That, and without the snow you have a lot more "particles" ie trash and such scattered across the terrain.

The thick fog in TD1 always gives me the chill and I could immersed myself into the game. TD2 only when it's raining or at dusk/dawn only then I feel immersed.

Playing the Second, just started a week ago... That was the first thing I noticed was that the graphics just seemed downgraded. I mean, I understand the snow and ice effects making the first one seem better, I get what they are saying there, but even inside buildings it just seems buggy... Also, the melee enemies charging you in the Div1 vs 2, 1 looked better. The enemies look goofy when they charge you in the Div2 .. Not to mention the faces during gameplay and the cinimatics in 2 are so buggy and wierd... Maybe they are gonna fix it and it'll look better like its supposed too, but as of right now, the textures and animation seem very downgraded or buggy to say the least... Still love the game though... Almost wish they would have stuck with snow, it might have been a whole lot better then having to add so much color and texture..... Lol

It's hard to say which is better. Div 1 only looks good because of the snow, especially at night when a blizzard is going on. The particle effects of the snow, fog and lighting make it look better, but I could make the argument that Div 2 looks better because of the rain. After it rains in Div 2, the game looks amazing. It's also hard to compare them because one is in a ''gloomy snowy'' setting, while the other is in a ''bright summer'' setting.

IcyRhythms yeah I can’t relate to that either Ice. Was killin it between 80-100 fps all night. Blaze was pulling 4k 60 but he has a 2080ti. Maybe it was just the gsync makin it feel smooth but I didnt have any performance issues. Great vid nonetheless

I agree, playing on the One X and the first game even down to npcs visually look better. 1st game also got a One X enhancement. A lot of pop in textures in the 2nd game.

19th of July, 2020: I downloaded Division 1 last night to play the trial, since I'm starting on NY on TD2. I searched the reverse: Div 2 looks better than Div 1. I am surprised to see all of this. It's undeniable, I've seen some screenshots and videos, it did look quite awful. In your comparisons here, it has to do with sharpness, shadows and lighting, imo. But having played TD2 for a while now (even yesterday) and today trying TD1 (Both on PC!), I felt things were kinda off. The faces specially and the res of textures, you can tell. Now, my PC can run them at 60fps on medium settings only, I know high-ultra ads up a lot of effects and details that make it look marvelous. But point of comparison is having them both on the same settings, TD2 does look quite great as of today. Also, all these comparisons come from the beta. I have no idea if TD2 on launch actually looked this way or not, if it did, that must've been horrible. But great to say they fixed it :D

I own division 1 on base ps4 and rented 2 from Gamefly and the graphics in part have indeed been downgraded, textures are worse is the 1st thing i noticed, the AA has been downgraded also, lighting seems to be the same. I sent it back after 3 days because of the downgrade.

I played the first one like a lot and I remember very well how it looks. To be honest i like the second one and I really don't want to go to the D1 gameplay style. Here gameplay is really improved.

I dont mind the reused assets but the lighting,visual/ui fx were somewhat toned down,the gunplay is still flimsy and not as satisfying as lets say other shooters (cod,bf,r6,ghost recon,etc etc) where the gunplay is tight,accurate and with great sound design where you can just recognize someones weapon by the sound. Both D1 and D2 have the same issues and tiny fixes but at D2 improved upon D1 with a slightly bump to life in its world,a better dark zone,less bulletsponges, but it also kept its terrible ai,same old ubisoft outposts and map features,the stiff animations and a small bug where the cover system does not properly attach. Overall better than D1 but with the same problems D1 has,although the lighting and fx do add a plus for D1 that D2 seems to lack. Also there is a day night cycle but nothing crazy. D1 is like Watchdogs1 where the weather looks amazing(rain/night especially) and D2 is like Watchdogs2 where the fx look dumbed down and less impactful but with a bump in gameplay. Dont @ me something dumb,this is just an opinion not a statement,just reality without bias. (If i made any typo errors,my bad)

There are weather effects in the division 2 open beta I've seen heavy rain and dust storms I think both games look great but I have to admit d1 looks so great with the snow an ice

I cant do an apples to apples comparison because im going from ps4 on td1 to a pc with a i7-6850 cpu and a gigabyte gtx 1080 gpu and the new division looks hands down better on max settings. But the game just doesn’t keep my attention even though it looks phenomenal.

I disagree with your assessment across the board. If you can play it at max settings on a PC, it looks phenomenal. Doing the DZ east intro mission in the Open Beta was awesome. So much green growth and god rays exploding from between the branches.

I filled out my beta surveys for Division 2 before looking at reviews so my opinion was 100% how I felt about it. LOL, This game is doomed!! I recent got back into the first game and am loving it and I also got back into Battlefield 4. Both games are awesome and much better than anything around today and it’s been long enough that it’s like playing new, but familiar games. PS if you do get back into Division 1, buy the gun called ‘The Historian’, so much fun.

I see lots of different takes in this topic. The funny thing is I noticed the visuals the moment I started playing. It's not the details of the builds, but the quality of the lighting and textures. For some reason it looks a bit "cartoony" in D2. D1 is definitely more cinematic when it comes to the lighting and color rendering. Even the highlights roll off in a very appealing way, while D2 looks less impressive. Don't get me wrong I am still getting D2, but definitely bummed about the overall visuals.

The should’ve just stick with snow. The vegetation it’s just too much and maybe I’d say too much destruction. I mean yes 7 months but come on it’s not like a zombie apocalypse. Also I miss the the SHD agents old style with the thing to go up. All rogue/npc’s have it...

They've improved all the technical aspects. The first game mostly looks prettier because of a lot of fog and snow hiding the details,and mostly blue and orange palette. Technologically the sequel is ahead but I honestly like the way the first game looks, but saying that technologically the Division 2 is worse would be a lie.

I like Division 2 but they should have kept the snow. They could have kept it in DC, it snows there too. The whole over grown DC does nothing for me. Just looks like the PS4 single player TPS template. Both games are good and I'm actually going to run back through D1 again after D2

I think it has to do with the art design change. First game took place in snowy environments, 2nd game is in lush environments. If you get to the later missions and dark zones the weather effect changes are definitely there, you just need to see more and dig deeper in the game. I really think the game is a step up from 1 imo. The gunplay feels much tighter and wait till you go up against elites they uped the animations of npc enemies, its pretty crazy.

Division 1 is more PHOTO REALISTIC in terms of design, Division 2 is more LIGHTING BASED but the overall world is cartoony colorful. I compared it to THE CREW and CREW 2, both are SnowDrop engine games.

I think you should reserve your judgement until yo have played through the division 2, and Im pretty shore that you're gonna have a totally different opinion about the game and the graphics. I no I did ! Because It utilizes the same G-engine but with a lot of improvements and so on !

I downloaded the beta on both pc and Xbox one x and I have to say it looks loads better on console. Which is a shame considering pc gamers deserve the best visuals for spending more money on their hardware. Also i did a direct comparison on pc of both Division games and this one is clearly worse looking than the last.

Same here! I spend 50 hours in D1 and OMG: my jaw has dropped so many times. Man, i did 258 screenshots! Then, i launched D2. And i was like MEH. Such a disappointment :(

I loved the snow of the the first game, and the visuals may not have been what the trailers said but still looked great. But what in the hell happened to division 2, the graphics look awful for 2019, looks like a 2011 game

I think the snowy atmosphere along with Xmas lights in the oringal game made the graphics appear better then they actually are. Division 2 looks so bland this is not surprising coming from Ubisoft I think the oringal Watch Dogs graphically looks better then the sequel. The biggest proof of that is if you compare the side character Jordi Chin from oringal to the sequel he looks downgraded. To be honest most of Ubisoft games this generation still look like cross gen games.

Tbh,the gameplay from Ghost Recon is way better than Division. If they could blend the great gameplay from GR,and mix it with the D2 Dark Zone and Open World aspects from both,it could be something special. The supplies/vehicles from GR Wildlands and the pvp/pve from D2. Just a thought. Dont @ me something dumb,again,this is not a statement just an idea not an actual change.

your div 2 video is sub quality, it does not show the details that you really see in the game. the texture details are great in div 2, esp on clothing and objects. cars are not rendered very well, let's say compared to far cry. I would like to see textures side by side to see if one is better but my impression with div 2 so far is it's maybe the most beautiful game I played.

Division 1 is more shinier than 2 IMO. Division 2 looks washed out compared to 1. Maybe it's the setting and lighting but Div 2 does not have the same visual appeal as 1.

Most of the new art assets look worse than from the first game. Playing the game felt like the Division 1.3. Exact same gameplay. This should be an expansion pack. I would never pay 60 for this.

TD2 has an issue with light and shadow rendering sometimes, especially during day-time, otherwise graphically, in term of textures, parallax mapping, reflections, models, it is an improvement over TD1

The Division 2 failed to up the game in visuals ... probably they did not have the same people working on Division 2.

Its just a different setting. TD1 was a darker game but they really nailed the topic on point. The game and the graphics were ahead of its time

I loved The Division, i hadnt thought about the game in a while though. I bought The Division 2 when i saw it was $20 used at GameStop....i noticed the AWFUL graphic immediately! I cant play it! Its AWFUL!

Really ? I have too cpu with 2080 ti, run both.did comparisons from shoring , running, view, weapon , skill, fire , water effect, and reflection , and all testing. D2 is better than d1 all the way graphically , it even optimized better than d1. It just crashed more than d1. And I used all max everything max out in 4K. From shadow to reflection all max. Be honest d1 is no where to d2 graphically . And end game d2 is better too. For solo and team player . Things are not that impossible for solo player like in d1. I also played d1. It is a good game. It just too much of a meat ball feeling. And d2 have more way of playing like ur role and skill is much bette than d1. U have status effect build , skill build , smg tank, ar tank, refile build (which hit the hardest be honest ) sniper , explosion build , cc build , dz build with many combinations. And u need to correct skill when encounter different types of enemies.in d1 all u need to do is farm classified build , no matter in dz or light zone , all u need is classified, that the end game . I know d1 have many “fun” experiences but be honest toxic players made it impossible to play. In d2 we can fight back the toxic player because of the armor kit take time to use. I mean from all, I see d1 is no where close to d2 other than that weird “greedy “ feel people always “miss”

I’m not seeing what you are, played both on LG C8 OLED, Xbox One X and II looks fantastic, more color and variety. I do believe that I is more intricate, there’s more in the scenes, detail wise.

From what I've seen Division 2 has a better lighting model, and a much better reflection system. Everything else its hard to compare due to the difference in seasons and time of day. We'll see upon release :)

Beta at this point means final product imo. Game release is 3/12 And it's not like they ship it to retailer with 1day shippimg. Most likely most of retailer will have the copies few days early , well at least some retailer will get the copy few days early at least. And there is factory where you need to make the game to physical form. We are talking about hundreds of thousands and millions of copies here. This will also take couple days. So by the time we are giving this game a excuse saying , it's only a beta, the factory prolly already produced hundreds and thousands of copies already some read to ship to retailer and some already shipped it so retailer can definitl y get it before March 12. Again beta about week or 2 before the release date is basically final product for physical form.

They are both extremely bad games with big downgrades, they are also money milking machines. If u have any moral, u woudnt buy games from activision, ubisoft, ea and similar companies
