As I continue the hunt for my next grail timepiece, today I revisit one of my favorite Rolex watches. After reviewing my own yellow gold Day-Date (ref. 18238), I borrowed a later platinum version (ref. 118206) which has unexpectedly changed my entire perception of this iconic luxury watch. In order to comprehend why, I revisit the history and story of its innovation while exploring some of my favorite locations in New York City.
Have I made a mistake by purchasing the yellow gold version? Why do I find the platinum version more compelling? Why has the Day-Date been so beloved by presidents, movie stars, captains of industry, musicians, and some of the world’s greatest heroes and most infamous villains? Could this be the only do-it-all luxury watch you’ll ever need?

I have a gold Rolex president day-date with a linen / diamond dial, diamond bezel, and barked president bracelet manufactured in February of 1972. It was my father’s watch. He purchased it after finally achieving business success in America after having immigrated to the United States from Greece in the mid-1950’s. He wore it daily for over 30 years and he truly loved this wristwatch. When he finally sold his business and retired back to Greece a little over 20 years ago he handed this watch down to me and a little over 10 years later he passed away. When I was a bit younger I felt self-conscious and a bit nervous wearing such a high profile and expensive timepiece. But now that I am in my 60’s I must say that it gives me a great deal of pleasure to wear this magnificent timepiece and to be able remember my father by it every time I put it on or check the time of day with it. 😎

I agree 100 percent with you on the 36mm. It is the most aesthetically pleasing size and shape. The larger ones expand in diameter but don't proportionally increase lug length ruining the shape.

I bought myself a Submariner in 08, but i wear my dad's gold 79 Oyster no day/date every day. i love the vintage look with the patina and miner scratches. everyone asks to buy it. I'll never sell it. thanks for the video, sir. i enjoyed it.

In my opinion, you made the perfect choice going with your yellow gold Day-Date. It is such a refined, classic, and beautiful design. My grandfather wore a yellow gold Day-Date everyday for most of his life so it is safe to say that I have a soft spot for it. Regardless, the platinum model is stunning. I have the platinum DD36 heft is always there, and I did wear it as my only watch for 3 years no problems. It is cool and understated and amazing when the light catches it, a warm sparkly shine. Certainly brighter than WG.

I have worn my gold President daily since 1984. I just took delivery on my 118206 last weekend. Only another watch enthusiast will notice what I am wearing.It is so much more understated that the gold day date. Thank you for your reviews.

Great video and 100% agree. This has been my grail for a long time. Understated and classy. I shy away from gold watches because I feel it is too pretentious. It’s good to hear you don’t notice the weight. That have been one of the items that gave me pause.

Great video! Love the Day-Date in white gold or platinum for the very reason that it is more understated, like you said, than yellow gold. Yellow gold does draw more attention, but white gold and platinum less so, and you make a great point of it being less blingy and more something you can appreciate for yourself. As for a Do-it-All Rolex? My all-stainless Datejust does the trick for me- domed bezel, black dial with lume stick markers, Jubilee band with hidden clasp-it's all the watch I want or need.

The 36mm is simply one of the most iconic watches of all time. I wear a 45 year old 18K with the bark finish they did for a number of years. The patina (never polished) is phenomenal. Aside from the obvious wide recognition, when I am around some very wealthy watch people, regardless of the Patek, Richard Mille, Audemars, etc they are wearing, this watch always gets a knowing nod of approval. I have a 45 year old steel and gold Datejust and I will leave it to my sons to figure out who will get which one when I am ready to give them up.

The Day-Date really is the perfect watch for every occasion. I’ve been very happy with my M-serial 118238. Champagne dial of course. I’m pretty conservative on this front. And German date wheel since it was a gift from my father who is German. I do tend to wear my MK1 BLNR much more often because I don’t want my friends and family to think that I’m snobbish. Unfortunately solid yellow gold can give a bad impression in the aftermath of 2008. Now that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t wear what you love just because of what others think! Also for platinum I prefer the larger DD40. I don’t like how smooth bezels look on 36mm watches. On the DD40 and DD2 it looks perfect imo.

wow. Generally I dont like rolex watches but this one is really nice. Also the 36mm fits your wrist so much better than some of the other watches on your videos. It is truly a classic and wonderful piece and the right size.

Both of those Day-Date watches are really nice but I prefer yours. One definitely has to be into watches made from gold or platinum for reasons other than the value of the metal though. I'd love a gold Day-Date but 3 or 4 times the cost of a Datejust is difficult for me to overcome when the value of the gold is about $3,500. I know there are other factors and they hold their value well though.

I have an 07 two tone datejust, blue dial, jubilee bracelet with hidden Rolex clasp, got it along with my wife's wedding bands to commemorate our 25th anniversary. What I love about the 118206 is that when on the wrist it is satisfying the owner with its Heft and reminding you its there and gives you a warm glow..whilst 99.9% of watch people have No idea what it is..The Gold DayDate is the complete opposite it lets both the Owner and Others know im here I command respect and craves to be seen but can certainly draw the wrong attention..Both stunning pieces but very much in their own way.

As you are showing the case of this specific rolex, it really reminds me of some of my Seiko cases. It looks smooth and 'melted'. Aesthetically, I'm not the biggest fan of the standard rolex case shape with the broad slad sides, but seeing this one with the smooth curves on top really seems interesting. Maybe it is just an optical illusion. Be interesting to see one in person one day.

Hey Tristano, I just want say that I am flabbergasted by my new 30 Atmos no: 028. I was very close to buying from the new batch of Baltic Aquascaphes but for a few hundred more, the 30 Atmos just tics so many more boxes. My grail 50 Fathoms model is not only too expensive but also too big for me to even wear. The 30 Atmos completely makes it obsolete to me anyway, well done! I love how it's a modern retro without being a rip off and in addition absolutely exquisitely executed. Fabulously classy aesthetics while still basically a tool watch. I can't stop wearing it, it is not only exceptionally beautiful but also exactly everything I have been wishing for. I couldn't care less about some snobs' ignorance of Squale. While I wasn't into the brand before finding this, it is absolutely perfect. It also suits me perfectly to support your efforts on this and everything you stand for. It's always inspiring to get your technical and historical insights along with the ever positive and no nonsense vibe. A true pleasure. An episode idea: Please try to get an interview with neo-classical superhero guitar player; Yngwie Malmsteen about his extraordinary vintage Rolex collection. I am certain he would love to do it. So I get the I at the 1 o'clock position, but shouldn't the 11 o'clock be XI, and therefore the X should appear and not the I? Could Rolex have made such a mistake? Thanks! -Chris

36mm is without doubt the 'quintessential' Day Date. That platinum/glacier dial is the pinnacle of the Oyster Perpetual that started with the 1931 'bubble back' went on to Date Just, then to Day Date and now the most precious of precious metals finally comepletes the evolution. No Rolex watch will ever be any better than that!

And I love the new Cartier Santos and think that adding it would make a perfect two piece collection but at the same time my mind comes back to the Datejust and how much I love those as well. Go for it TGV - and keep also the one made out of gold - in my opinion both watches appear quite different though they share the same family tree - and you never can go wrong with another Rolex
