In this episode, we'll be finishing up the 'Leyton' (or Starfleet) coup with ' The Dominion War : A Failed Coup and dead Starfleet Officers ' - I think it's one of the sadder aspects of Deep Space Nine - What do you guys think?

Not sure how I didn't point out you can see part 1 of this 2-parter at the beginning. But I'll include the link here - if it seems like I skipped some stuff.. It's probably in part 1. ALSO! I know the beeps are a bit loud - still playing around with that. Will be fixed in tomorrow's video. Part 1: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gm5B2JJAR9U.html

It's interesting when you point out how Leyton thinks he can undo the changes after, that is how dictatorships original worked in the roman republic, in times of crisis the romans would an elect a dictator with supreme power and they would lay down power after they solved the crisis.

I always took the Changeling that looked like Chief O'Brian to be more significant. It showed that after living on Earth the Changeling started to see solids or at least Human's differently. It may have been the origin of decisions by the great link to make Odo human, not Bajoran, human.

They take care that no one is ever in a room when they do a phaser sweep (other than Odo for test purposes). That indicates to me that the level needed was too dangerous to use on a non-changeling.

sisko did ask his guards blood test him, when all the guards were getting daily rounds of tests. The guards said something like they have orders to not interact with him.
@LoreReloaded

They also said 'Yea I'll lower that forcefield and you'll use a changeling attack on me'.. That's where I got the 'they truly believed it' type deal.. orders are a good explanation to.

What bugged me about that scene, Layton told Sisko to let the guards know if he needed food. Changelings don't eat.

In the original script as a reaction to Leyton's attempt to take over Earth Vulcan would've seceded. Anyway they simplified the plot as there would be too many things going on. Funny that Leyton's actor played both in Enterprise and B5 characters central to an internal conflict.

Originally, it was supposed to be a season long arc. But Paramount wanted to shake things up to improve the ratings, so they came up with the Klingon conflict. That's why there were so few episodes focused on the Klingon conflict despite the huge set up in Way of the Warrior. They really hadn't plan the Klingon plot out that much. It's kind of a miracle that things turned out as well as they did.

I have to wonder as the Dominion War progress would Starfelet reinstate Leyton and Captain Maxwell, but show they can fight and they would need experienced war captains at that point. I also wonder if Leytons coup slowed the upgrade of Excelsiors to Lakota spec. even pulling punches an 80 year old desgin could match a Defiant. That is a worthwhile upgrade.

Outside of destroying the Defiant with the unrevealed quantum torpedoes, the Lakota was quickly losing that fight.

Starfleet always wanted to be an exploratory and diplomatic arm of the Federation this always led them into conflicts they could have avoided sooner if they were a bit more aggressive as they were in a constant state of appeasement pretty much with anyone hostile. They probably remained more militarized after the dominion war as it was more brutal than other conflicts. This episode and the one you're doing next are some of my favourites for DS9 as they show that humanity still has a dark side. Quark made note of this once saying humans can become more ruthless than the most blood thirsty klingon.

Just found this video in my reccomended tab. I took a gander and I wasn't disappointed. I do agree that a weakness in Star Trek as a whole are with its monoculture take with each major faction and its citizens. I do like how DS9 shows the veraity within the individual characters from each world while trying to keep a balance with their cultural identities. I'll subscribe to see your take on The Pale Moonlight. Good work

I've always assumed that the lack of a ripple of support for Layton's ideas was due to a combination of the pacifistic view of the Federation that we see so strongly with Picard and the fact that any political movement associated with a coup so disingenuous as Layton's was thoroughly discredited and no one would dare advocate for a position which had been so greatly undermined.
@macnut68
@macnut68 6 лет назад
Personally, I always thought that it was Layton being so thoroughly discredited (look how fast Captain Bentine of the Lakota turned on him when she learned the truth) that led to any support for him melting away. Any Starfleet or government member giving even moral support for Layton's position would have been very careful to keep that to themselves after Layton's fall. Also, I doubt he had much support to start with. He got as far as he did using a lot of deception, trickery, and abusing the trust Starfleet officers generally have for their superiors, along with the trust of the Federation council for their appointed admirals.

5:25 Memory alpha: "An exception to the treaty [of Algeron] allowed for the limited supervised use of at least one cloaking device on loan from the Romulans. *Operation of the cloaking device was to be limited to the Gamma Quadrant.* In return, the Romulans would receive all information the Federation obtained on the USS Defiant's voyages into the Gamma Quadrant, most importantly any information concerning the Dominion. As such, the Defiant was the only Federation ship to be permanently equipped with a cloaking device." I know Sisko violated this agreement on more than one occasion, but still. In my mind the treaty was, what kept them from cloaking..

"Sometimes looking for peace can go to far." There was a British MP who learned this lesson the hard way in the late 1930's. I wonder how WWII would have gone if France and Britain would have attacked German in 1935 or 1936 when Hitler started to violate the terms of the Armistice agreement. They would have been fully within their rights to do this, but they were desperate to have peace in their time, so the let Hitler grow his military power until he was a very real and dangerous threat. One that would require the combined strength of England, the United States, the USSR and France and more than a year to completely defeat. And yes, there were French forces invading with the Allies on D-Day. Those forces that escaped at Dunkirk.

The anti-military sentiment of the Federation has always been a great source of annoyance on my part when it comes to the Star Trek universe. That's why I like to Deep Space Nine later Seasons when the Federation finally decided to nut up or shut up. The same sort of mentality is what I found very annoying about both iterations of the Republic in the Star Wars universe. In both fictional universes these organizations in defiance of all logic left themselves vulnerable for the sake of principle. Even though much of their history has shown that they could be attacked at any time.
@andymac4883

Starfleet's assertion that it's not a military organisation throughout TNG, including Riker's claim in Peak Performance that combat represents a tiny proportion of command in the face of a war game, and the general disdain that the crew held for the military minded Cpt Jellico, is even more baffling to me considering where the Federation was at the time of the series' beginning. TNG's first episode is set in 2364. The Federation-Cardassian war began less than twenty years earlier in 2347, officially ended in the mid 2350s but border skirmishes were still happening up to the 2360s. The Federation engaged in border conflicts with the Talarians in the late 2350s, and the Federation-Tzenkethi war took place in the early 2360s. Starfleet has been taking part in no less than three armed conflicts in the twenty years before TNG, one of which might have ended as little as a year before the series opener, and yet Starfleet insists it's not a military unit?
@andymac4883
@andymac4883 6 лет назад
CommandoDude I can see why Starfleet might maintain it's anti-military rhetoric up to the Cardassian war, I'm more confused as to how they could maintain it during and after the conflict, considering they ended up fighting in more than one war during that period.

I love this analysis, this is a good point both ships could of blown each other straight to hell if they used quantum torpedoes. This explains why the defiant use its usual tactic of slowing down and firing phaser cannon and follow up with 4 quantum. Then again on the flip side the Lakota could have fired all of its phasers at once or used longer pulses and polished off the defiant with its quantums. They both were defiantly holding back.

The way I see it a phaser on heavy stun would, well, heavily stun Sisko. I.e. render him unconscious and out of action for hours or even days, at a critical moment. No wonder he didn't try that.

Some one may have said this already but I notice a lot of the comments basically say something like, "if the 24th century Federation/starfleet would be more willing to kick some ass........." I think that comes from the time we live in. We watch star trek from the perspective of 2 world wars and who-knows-how-many-other military conflicts. In the the 24th century the values of the federation are, for the most part, "peace love and understanding." And when they say that, THEY MEAN IT. Those are core values for them and if they give that up they are coming close to losing what they are. And you hear it all through trek from the 24th century. In the first season of TNG the alien said that the Ferengi may one day grow powerful enough to destroy you(Federation). Riker says, "Our values tell us we have to take that chance." To us they are being preachy. But they believe in that with the same passion as others believe in free speech and the right to bear arms.To us the fact that the federation has to be pushed so hard to fight (Much less get in to a knock down drag out full on war)shows weakness. But after starfleet not being ready for a war they knew was going to happen, and the Federation being pacifistic to the point of being naive, the Federation and its allies did win in the end. It's because of what the Federation stands for. A historic example. Near the end of the war in Europe, the Americans and the U.K. were closing from the west and the USSR was coming from the east. Germans who knew the war was over risked their lives to make it to the west so they would be captured by the Americans. Why? because "Americans treat you right. Russians shoot on sight." (I just thought that up myself ::smirk::) IMO if the Dominion war was ending and starfleet had not been there, (just Romulans and Klingons) the Cardassians would have just left the fight. Maybe they would have gone back to Cardssia and tried to stop the massacre that was going on there. But I think they stayed and helped *starfleet* and then went back to Cardassia with the Federation and it's allies. Why? Because the war is already over. "Starfleet treat you right." "Klingons/Romulans shoot on sight." Also I don't think a Klingon or Romulan could have sent an operative behind the lines to help with the Cardassian underground. It was hard enough sending a Bajorn. But Kira went in as a *starfleet* officer. That gave her credibility that she would not have if she just went as former Bajorn terrorist/freedom fighter. IMHO Sorry for the rant
@bb1111116
@bb1111116 6 лет назад
There is always possible behavior which doesn't happen in a story but could have happened. But in history (especially with war where decisions are documented) that is also true. The question can be; 'why did this leader order an attack when generals argued against it?' or 'Why do some revolutions succeed and other collapse?'. In the end, the way the story played out with Sisko could have happened considering the circumstances. It's plausible.

I disagree: The episode works so effectively because Jarush Inyo needed to hear sisko’s proposals at the beginning and as a result fed into a slippery slope conditioned by Leyton and his coconspirators ... i feel it carries the tradition of “drumhead” seeing as there definitely was a spy etc etc

Note they Did not want to use photon torpedoes when they was shooting each other as that could of destroyed the defiant (both ships was holding back and the defiant if it used its phase cannons and torpedoes is not match at the start of the battle any way as at the end defiant only had ablative armor protecting it shields was down),, both ships they used phasers only and most likely not even at full power (even the defiant did not use the Phaser cannons for same reason they only wanted to disable or not even fight) she stood down when he ordered her to use photon torpedoes to destroy the defiant (as the ablative armor is semi resistant to energy fire to a point, torpedoes without shields well that's bit more deadly)

The ship could not be cloaked, because of the legal agreement with the Romulans government only to use the cloak in the gamma quadrant. The use of the cloak was in exchange intelligence information on the Dominion. The federation were barred by a previous peace Treaty with the Romulans government not to use any cloaking technology in the alpha quadrant.
@LoreReloaded

+Limerickman they used that cloak with out regard to the agreement through out the series..it was as if they agreement didn't exist.

Lore Reloaded They used during the Dominion war, but not before the war in the Alpha quadrant. It was for used against the Dominion. On first arrival on DS9 as part of the agreement to test the cloak with a Romulan Engineer on board as they travelled to the DS9 Station. They were allowed tests. They did however breach the agreement when they took the Cadassian civilian government to DS9 under cloak.
@LoreReloaded
@LoreReloaded 6 лет назад
I know what the agreement is - but they used it - unregulated - in the alpha quadrant. Dominion War or no.. The Dominion War even makes it worse.. Remember the Romulan Star Empire wanted to remain neutral a large part of the war. So if they knew that the device was being used against the dominion - I think they would have had strong reservations as that seems to be quite clear bias..
@TentaclePentacle

they did break that only use cloak in gamma quadrant rule quiet a bit. But everytime they do it, there is a log of it in the computers. So I would think they rather not have to explain to the romulans why they did it, especially they were just going home to earth.

I question how far such a coup attempt would have continued without Leyton. If Benteen (who Sisko commented was one of the closest participant in the coup attempt to him) had already abandon him, it doesn't makes sense for the others to charge ahead. They are Starfleet officers after all. With the coup attempt being discovered, that might have tempered the others. Whatever justification Leyton sold to them to gain their loyalty and support (under the guise of UFP safety) probably came crashing down once the truth was discovered of what was really going on.
@joshuasepeda3289
@joshuasepeda3289 5 лет назад
When that changeling said they didn't have to do much to scare the federation he wasn't wrong. The federation was so desperate to maintain the facade of paradise on Earth that any shadow of trouble would cause a massive overreaction and admiral layton's planned coup against the federation council would be exhibit a. It's clear that the federation had lost sight of the need for self defense and was panicking because they realized their delusional world was collapsing around them.

Fun fact, they modified the Excelsior model for Generations, and added the extra bits so that they wouldn't damage the model when the movie's events showed the damage. In Star Trek the original series the Enterprise encounters many planets with large human populations and in voyager they meet Amelia Earhart on a world where many humans had been transplanted to. Some unknown aliens had long ago transported people to these worlds and established these human colony worlds. Because of this, the amount of Human worlds and the Human population was higher than most other species by the time the Federation was established. This is probably why Humanity seems to dominate the Federation so much.

so you want a star fleet that always attacks first never asks questions?

@saqwana25
@saqwana25 6 лет назад
I just seem from watching a lot of your videos you want a federation that I more of an out and out empire willing to utterly decimate threats without mercy or compunctions. It just comes off that you would prefer a slightly less bloodthirsty Terran empire, I could be misunderstanding your stance.
@LoreReloaded
@LoreReloaded 6 лет назад
Sure, again - with out specifics.. I can't really speak to a lot of what you are talking about. I don't see roddenberry as the most likely outcome for our species if that's what you mean. I would say we will end up as DS9 in the best case scenario and more likely stargate, battlestargalactica, or Babylon 5
@saqwana25
@saqwana25 6 лет назад
I would rather hope for a humanity that can grow up instead of remain mired in our childish brutality. Well, it seems to me that you want star fleet to be a pure military and abandon all scientific and exploration duties. You all seem to have no issue with Starfleet unleashing a bioweapon on the founders because all that matters is the victory.
@LoreReloaded
@LoreReloaded 6 лет назад
Hoping for a better reality and being realistic about it are two different things in my opinion. I don't think I've ever said I want it to be purely military - I have reported on the show the way it is.. the fact that it is what it is..don't blame me. As for starfleet unleashing a bioweapon - obviously you've not seen all of my videos if you think that's my opinion on it ;)

Nice video, but the sound that you play when bringing up ship info is a bit loud and drowns out your voice. It sounds like you stacked the sound bit 2 or 3 times over its at around 5:10 causing the sound effect to be loud and harsh. Anyway I don't think that the coup would have lasted very long, Layton had to use lies to get his officers to do what he wanted. If you have to lie to have people follow you, don't expect any long term success.

If the coup was successful, the Dominion would have won. Using modern history as an example, any coup justified or not leads to civil unrest and civil war war. The conflict post coup would weaken or completely tear apart the Federation. For the Dominion, a divided enemy as an easily conquered enemy.

Where was section 31 in all this? I’m guessing they would have been involved in the coup attempt but they wouldn’t have been so overt about it.
@LoreReloaded
@LoreReloaded 6 лет назад
Perhaps they waited in the wings to see if sisko prevailed and if he hadn't, would have stepped in.
@RealtorDanHayden

I’m thinking they wouldn’t have wanted sisko to prevail. They were pro genocide, a little military dictatorship wouldn’t be a stretch.

section 31 had already poisoned the odo (1-3 years before can't remember time) who merged with the link that infected all of them so all they had to do was wait it out (they was dieing at the end of that war even odo was) they only had to wait it out for them to all die (not sure what's worse organised jem-ard or mad jem-ard with no white juss left and no one commanding them) well until they managed to get the cure when and ended the war (they did technically brake a load of rules that should of locked them away forever when julian did that mind probe thing)

I disagree, it was smart for Starfleet to be pacifistic because it made the Dominion look like the bad guys. For example it doesn't matter how many ships you have, you need allies. If Starfleet was more militaristic it could have triggered a war between the Romulans or any other power

I’m not sure a Federation under martial law would be just as bad as the Dominion... They don’t genocide governments they don’t agree with, or just glass planets. Sort of like saying the USA under martial law would be as bad as North Korea. Why am I typing this? I’m a year late.

I love how *Homefront* and *Lost Paradise* predict ISIS methods to drive fear into the heart of their enemies (West) to mak them alienate anyone that is an alien (immigrant). Pun intended.

to be fair though a lot of the immigrants from the middle east and Africa seem to be all of military age. and in towns they arrive in a rise in crime follows and more Islamic based attacks happen.

I have found it rarely gets bad and is self contained. I'm also not above deleting :P This channel is not political and I try very hard to keep it about Lore and the human condition in respect to that. I don't always succeed, but I try.
