Great video, I wonder if you can help me find a Spooky Pop-up book that I read as a child in a bookstore, back in the mid to late 90's. I can't remember the title, but I can remember the plot pretty well: A boy and a girl explore a haunted house together. The boy leads (with either a Torch or a Camera) and the girl follows behind. The pair are followed by the Monster and Ghouls that live in the haunted house, mostly keeping out of sight behind lift-up panels and decorations. The girl gets tapped on the shoulder by one of the Ghouls and over 2-3 pages she slowly turns into a Monster, the boy being completely oblivious to her transformation. The final page of the book is the big pop-up. The boy turns around and is given a big scare by the fully transformed Monster-Girl and all the other Ghouls that live in the haunted house. I've found a lot of "Haunted House" Pop-Up books on google searches, but this series most closely matches the art style that I remember. Any information you may have will really help me. Thanks

Hi, The book you're describing is the 1992 mini horror pop-up The Horrors of Howling Hall. It's one of 4 mini pop ups by the same publishers as this one (Compass Productions) and I'm pretty sure it's the same artist (though no credits are listed in the book). I have 3 of the 4 pop up books from this mini series (including The Horrors of Howling Hall) and was waiting to get hold of the 4th before featuring them, but the last one I need is rather elusive, and expensive when it does show on eBay.

Yet another nice overview. The book really brings, ah, _alive_ the sense of space, as though we were truly navigating in three dimensions through a real cellar, albeit one chock‐full of the unreal. The doorway cutout in the first spread revealing something (some _thing)_ of the next spread is a nice touch, helping sell the sense of space, though I wish more was done with the cutout-some sort of intriguing reveal, I guess. That skeletal hand grabbing us from the coffin is fabulous. Thereʼs a lot of nice detail throughout the book. I do find the end imagery a letdown, but I do like that the verses of the very first spread spell out unambiguously that a terrible fate awaits the reader as he dares venture forth into the bowels of this accursed house. As for further recommendations, I donʼt have any that are quite down the same graveyard alley, but here are two that may be worth your attention - though not story‑ or verse‐oriented, just spread‐by‐spread galleries. One, _Midnight_ _Monsters_ by Helen Friel, uses paper engineering for an effect different from the typical pop‐up experience. It bills itself “A Pop‐up Shadow Search”, and its pop‐ups are not images per se but rather are (in each spread) three tiers of shapes with cutouts, designed to combine into silhouettes of creepy things suitable for casting shadows on your wall! Then thereʼs another early Matthew Reinhart entry, tonally quite different in the fears it taps into: _The_ _Pop‐up_ _Book_ _of_ _Phobias_ - written by Gary Greenberg and illustrated by Balvis Rubess. Iʼm not normally creeped out by clowns, but the coulrophobia spread is quite effective, with a painted face whose animated expression will remind you of the ending of _Some_ _Bodies_ _in_ _the_ _Attic_ - and then thereʼs the lunging lollipop! The acrophobia spread makes me feel like Iʼm about to tumble down, down, down. Another spread has a filthy toilet whose lid and seat you can even lift - if you dare touch them! And so on. Thanks for the tour, Mark!

Yes, for the big finish (as most of these spooky books seem to go for), poor old Frank ain't the most spectacular - he doesn't really burst out of the pages or expand to create an image bigger than the book, that a lot of the best pop-ups do. I do love the detail in all the imagery though. I've found that there's another series of 4 books by the same publishers - different author, but possinly the same artist and paper engineer, I'm not sure, the books don't really have any details. I have 2 from the series and am trying to track down the others before I feature them all. Pop Up Shadow Search looks interesting - I've always been fascinated by artist who create shadows from interworking objects; like Tim Noble and Sue Webster's junk piles. I picked up Harry Potter - Creatures: A Paper Scene Book at a charity shop a couple of weeks ago which has a nice layered affect too (though no pop-ups). And of course, at some point I have to get up a video about The Babadook...
