Listen to the first few bars again. It starts with bossa nova jazz drumming, then shifts into a Chicago blues hook, then explodes into hard rock. There you have the Doors in one tiny package. Brilliant.
@totallytomanimation
@totallytomanimation 4 года назад
This song is directly related to the Aldous Huxley book "Door's of Perception" from which the band gets their name. The Breakthrough he's singing about is the use of drugs to breakdown the walls of perception and pull the veil away from our perceived reality. He was aware of and enthusiastically embraced the spiritual notions of different and ancient cultures that included ceremonial drug use, namely hallucinogenics, as a means of interacting with the spirit world and gaining enlightenment. Hence... Break On Through.

The Doors have made some great great music..with one of the best frontman ever to emerge from a rock 'n roll band.I can only imagine what they could have cranked out if only Jim hadn't dabbled too much into them hard drugs.It's great to see India delve more into them,in due time she'll come around to realize what great music this band had to offer.
@StellaWaldvogel
@StellaWaldvogel 4 года назад
We don't know what killed Jim. A heart attack at 27 is unlikely, and by all accounts he HATED heroin. No autopsy. Cremation. We'll never know for sure. My advice is "Follow the money." But during his life, his vice was mostly alcohol. And he didn't die from that.
@stevedamico5793
@stevedamico5793 4 года назад
@@StellaWaldvogel It's irrelevant at this point, but what makes you think he didn't die from alcohol? Just curious....From what I understand, by all accounts, he drank a whole helluva lot. If that's true, I don't think it's much of a stretch to imagine that that was a strong possibility. It's not at all difficult to consume enough alcohol to kill you. I've lost my fair share of friends this way.
@sacluvsBM
@sacluvsBM 4 года назад
@@stevedamico5793 He did die from acute alcoholism. Certainly other contributing factors but there is very little doubt if Jim had not been drunk that night ( or had not taken a bath he would not have died that night because he had not done anything he had not done several hundred times before. Jimi Hendrix was the same. He puked and aspirated his vomit. If Jimi had not gone to sleep on his back that night he probably would not have died, either. RIP Mr Mojo Risin'.
@jvs333
@jvs333 4 года назад
Jim’s issue was alcoholism. During that time Nixon was using the FBI yo investigate rock stars starting with John Lennon whom Nixon hated because of the anti wars stuff. I find it odd Jimi, Janis, Morrison, all died under mysterious circumstances all roughly in a year

The first concert l ever attended was in Merced, California in October of 1966. It was held at the VFW hall on what was 17th St back then and a few years later became MLK Blvd. On the bill were the Seeds and the Doors. The building held 187 people and the tickets were $2.50 for this VJ presents show. The Seeds had the number one song that past summer with Your Pushing Too Hard and no one knew who the Doors were. This was six months before the first album was released and 8 months before Light My Fire came out. The first song the Doors did was Break on Through. The Seeds learned the hard way that night not to follow the Doors on stage.

"I found an island in your arms, country in your eyes. Arms that chained us, eyes that lied, break on through to the other side". It is a love song about not being able to trust those close to you but needing love. Jim's first love was a girl when he lived in Alabama, she saw through Jim's act. He was clearly dealing with depression and anxiety. People with those issues act normal but inside want to run and hide, break on through to the other side.

To me, there's hardly a comparison of bands from this era and now, the limited amount of technology, a lot of live one takes, no auto tunes, small unknown studios, no internet publicity, the fans made you, and so much of it still holds up, gains new fans, their lyrics were so much more mature seeming than other eras, not wholly, but, often. The Doors were a great example of all things 60s.

In 1967 I was seventeen when I bought this album.It changed me .This was when the idea of a new culture with very different notions about life in America,became real to me.life in 67 was not about flower power but about a system that seemed to be coming unglued.I don't mean hating America was in vogue.It wasn't.However,in 1962 a nuclear war almost started.In 63 the man who manly saved us from that war,John Kennedy himself was killedin 64 we heade into Vietnam.In 65,66,,67,and 68 riots broke out across America every summer.it felt like everything was coming unglued.That was the spur that started us wanting to create a new culture.We were all afraid,not angry.Understand that and you will understand why many people,of all colors want to change direction again and stop the hate.

In 1967, I know that's dating myself, but my bff and I went to the Pasadena Civic Auditorium to see the Doors. When we got there, along with a few hundred other people, a guy came out and yelled at us, that the Doors wouldn't be playing, and furthermore, we were going straight to the hot place if we listened to their sinful music.

Lots of great Doors music to review. This one is definitely aimed at the psychedelia that was so prominent at that time. Breaking on thru what we think we know. Until that trip. With each occasion you learn more and more about the world, how it's run, not to trust what you're being told, and thinking critically for yourself. Thank you for the review!

You should definitely also react to “Luka” (“My Name is Luka”) by Suzanne Vega...also “Tom’s Diner” by the same singer. “Luka” is from around 1987, and is about child abuse. The music video is a classic. She released “Tom’s Diner” in 1990, but she wrote the song around 1982. Great video! There was such intelligence in music during the 60’s .The lyrics were sophisticated and mature in terms of the intellect it took to create them. That generation of Americans from all walks of life were better educated, devouring books, poetry and also had excellent penmanship, learned albeit by strict Nuns in Catholic school. Each decade since, there has been some diamonds among the rough in terms of music, but on the whole, we’re dealing with recycled, dumbed down pop aimed at bringing in $ and then being disposed of. How sad.
