It's very easy to give an over-exaggerated characterization of Morrison's singing. To me, opera singi ng is irritating. I enjoy listening to a singer like Charlotte Church much more than the vibratos that opera singers typically use. I would agree that Morrison was over-rated as a singer, and he hit too many notes off-key, especially in live performances (though there were probably many nights when his singing was affected by liquor or drugs). You could tell that he never had any real training. I still love much of the Doors' music though. and I love the lyrics of many of their songs, including Break on Through. You ignored this aspect of the song entirely, btw.

Morrison and the Doors are so iconic. Lots of radio hits back in the day, and very solid albums. But only around for a few years, because Morrison died at age 27. Morrison was a natural born rockstar.

Jim was well-known for his ability to sing these types of songs for hours without getting voice fatigue.Maybe he had some sort of genetic gift,but many lead vocalists of the day were amazed by his endurance.I live up the street from his former home in Laurel Canyon Los Angeles.

Was listening to our local morning show this morning (it's kind of nationally famous). They used to do a live show in LV every year and tons of stars would drop by and such. One of the side-men was giving an anecdote about when they had Grace Slick hosting the show with them in LV a number of years back. One of the fans in attendance had made the group some home made moonshine. Of course, no one wanted to drink it. Grace turns to this side-man and asks if he's going to drink any. Of course not, he replies. Slick returns "I went on tour with Jim Morrison once. He would have drank it." Side-man knew what he had to do at that point. Instant regret. I think it's my favorite little Jim Morrison story.

The Doors had their radio music, which was played on AM radio, since FM was not available most places. But at night his other songs came out, like "The End." KAAY in Arkansas had Beaker Street from Midnight to 600Am or so. Back then AM radio carried long distances. I could get all of these at night: Chicago WLS, Ft Worth WBAP, and Louisiana Hayride, and Tennessee Grand Ole Opry.

The Doors were one of the great bands from that era and they are still better than most of what you hear on the radio these days. If you want to hear a really unusual voice I suggest you try The Residents. The Residents are a very unusual band with a unusual singer. It's about as raw of a voice as you will get. The Residents have been around since '72 and are credited with inventing the music video. They have over 60 albums. The Smithsonian has their videos in it's catalog. They are also anonymous. They wear masks and costumes when they tour. I believe the singer is the only original member still in the band. They do a cover of James Brown's It's a Man's Man's Man's World and the 2017 live HQ version is just awesome.

Band's first single, 1967. Morrison was several things: a voracious reader and intellectual; a poet; a theatrical confrontationist who enjoyed pushing a crowd to extremes; a drunken lout; a teen idol. His death in Paris in 1971 remains mysterious.

For the record, my bet you were a gleam in someone's eyes in 1965. Get ready for Jim, he was a bit of a wild man! He wrote good lyrics. One of my favorite doors line is "Topless bars, Cops in cars, NEVER seen a woman SO alone!" Your room mate may think you are being attacked!!!! If they call 911 you will have some explaining to do! For the record, Ray played the bass line on his keyboards. I think Robbie was a teenager (19) when he joined the band. He wrote or co-wrote a lot of their music, Light my Fire, Touch Me, and Love Her Madly to name a few.. One of their BIG songs was "Light my Fire". It was a number ONE hit for them..... You are going to become a rocker yet...... We would be proud to have you! I would like for you to review --- "Light my Fire."

In 1967 I was 11 years old and just loving my life listening to the music of that time on my transistor radio on AM stations......The British invasion, Motown, and much more...it was all good...I heard Bob Crosby of The Byrds, and of Crosby, Stills, and Nash talk about Jim Morrison back in the day...While he may have been a poet and a great musician, according to Crosby Jim Morrison was a class A asshole...he said that Morrison was hated by most of his peers...Crosby spoke of a party attended by the musicians of that day and everyone was drinking and doing drugs and just having a great time...then Morrison started his antics of picking on people and borderline bullying them as well...Crosby said that Morrison started his shit with Janis Joplin...Morrison and Janis argued until Janis had enough of his shit and laid out Morrison with a bottle of Southern Comfort which was what she drank...knocked his ass out cold...lol...Whilst Jim Morrison is known today for his body of work and loved for his poetry and songs, he wasn't the guy that everyone wanted to be with... Another side note...Morrison and Janis both were in the "27 club" along with Jimi Hendrix...they all died from an overdose of drugs at the age of 27....Good reaction, Mags...rock on with your bad self, girl....keep being awesome...

Hers my theory on the raspy voice. Most people who have that in their normal vocal repertoire of songs they may have never gone through voice or singing lessons, when when people say it is natural, it is natural for them to sing like that, because that is their singing style.

Bossa nova was just creeping into the States from Brazil at the time, Denmore thought it was cool and adapted it into the song. Ray is actually playing a Ray Charles riff on the keyboard, but i foget which. Robbie's guitar riff comes from a Paul Butterfield tune called, Shake Your Money Maker. The Doors would steal from anyone. Edit : this is the censored version, the, "she get" part, should actually be, "she get high"
@johnstorton
@johnstorton Год назад
"The Doors would steal from anyone." Ray would tell you that himself, without being asked. He said Riders on the Storm evolved from Ghost Riders in the Sky, Part of the organ solo in Light My Fire was (somewhat) copied from Coltrain. The musical ideas come from other songs, then they alter it. That's how a lot of music is written. "Stealing" from anybody? Think Led Zeppelin!
