@markmh835
@markmh835 4 года назад
Maggie Smith was outstanding in this role and scene, of that there is no doubt. But I'm not sure if I would say no one else could have played this scene better. Had Dame Judi Dench played the role in the scene, I imagine her doing so by speaking more slowly, deliberately, with a cool flat monotone, menacingly over-articulating each word. And in the longer, cooler pauses which no doubt would have been manifest in Ms. Dench's performance of this scene, one could no doubt debate whether she was contemplating Miss Cruikshank's death by poison or by a hit man. Absolutely chilling to imagine Judi Dench's performance of this same material.

I feel like there's a particular writer in the Downton Abbey writers' room for Violet. Her cadence, her scathing wit, and even her somewhat archaic construction of sentences is so unique, yet it has remained consistent for her as a character throughout the seasons. With a handful of other Downton characters, the style of speaking is somewhat interchangeable, but Violet has a voice all of her own.

She could be The Honourable Miss Cruikshank. The daughters of nobles with titles below that of Earl (e.g. Viscount) don't get Lady before their names, but they are styled as "The Honourable Miss X," however you wouldn't really use "The Honourable" in everyday conversation, instead referring to them as "Miss X." Cruikshank didn't do much to disguise herself, beyond the friendly veneer of course. "Larry hadn't thought matters through..." "Lord Merton is old..." there were infinitely better ways of phrasing both of those without betraying one's calculation and lack of regard for Lord Merton. "Larry's got a hot head on him, I'll admit, but the invitation was an attempt to mend bridges." "Lord Merton quite fancies Mrs Crawley, I thought giving them an opportunity to know each other better would do no harm." "Sure, I'll leave the house for a time, but once Lord Merton dies, either Mrs Crawley will flee from the grief or Larry and I can be of service in mending the broken heart left behind." I get the feeling that Cruikshank hasn't had much experience being interrogated.

I’ve always had a head cannon that post the end of the show, Larry and Amelia either spent all of Merton’s fortune or got hit hard by the Great Depression. Both ends regardless, karma would catch up to the miserable couple.

Did the Great Depression have much impact on England? This is the first time I've wondered about that. In any case, they are a pair of rats in an opulent nest (for the time being, but karma will catch up to them).

@@rowanaforrest9792 My understanding (I'm American) is it did impact their economy, but it was not preceded by a huge economic boom the way it was in the US and elsewhere. The UK economy was flat during the 20s so it had a shorter distance to fall when the Depression hit but it did take a hit.

@@rowanaforrest9792 yeah! industry was hit pretty hard as the uk allowed goods into the country without tax, driving businesses to buy from abroad - this is the reason the dole was introduced and unemployment skyrocketed

@@rowanaforrest9792, oh yes, "we" Europeans had something akin to the American Great Depression at the same time. Here in The Netherlands it was called: "The Crisis Years" [De Crisis Jaren]. My Grandparents lived through it, and my Parents were born during those "Crisis" years between WWI & WWII. Then again "ours" was fueled/caused, not ONLY, by the Crash on Wallstreet, but also WWI: when the great industrial Countries in Europe had to rebuild. (It can even be argued that WWII was partially "caused by" or "created on" the financial ruins of WWI). So yes, the American Great Depression made it's effects be felt around the world. (Just like the huge financial Crisis, in this century, we all suffered/felt, when things again went terribly wrong in the financial world on Wallstreet back in 2007).✌🏻

this is my favorite moment of the entire series. The dowager is my favorite character by far and this time she really used her wit and mental power solely to root out a nasty game that is being played with an already tormented friend. She also proves she truly embraced Isobel here after she nursed here when she was ill

I'll note that Violet's 'shall I sit here' is noting a _serious_ lack of hospitality and courtesy on Amelia's part. A guest in one's home, no matter how unexpected, should _never_ have to ask whether to be seated, particularly given the relative social standing, as I understand it.
@MarkT1700
@MarkT1700 Год назад
It's very subtle, but it's almost an insult, she called her rude lol. But also at the same time, it was a power move. Those words are very specific and by using them, she is essentially communicating that she will sit and be heard. It's a rhetorical question meant to remind Amelia that Lady G has a higher standing.
