Imagine a boss battle, where a party defeats the boss. The boss drops his disguise and becomes a steel dragon, who then congratulates the heroes and thanks them for killing the bad guy, freeing the dragon to move onto a new role. Maybe even perform a sort of “exit interview” with the party, to see how they would rate him as a villian. Afterwards, the dragon leaves to assume a new role never to speak with the heroes again.

Sister Saanah runs an Orphanage in the local town. She is well beloved and generous, the only sign of vanity she displays is a pair of simple steel earrings. She listens very patiently to the (often made-up) stories the children tell her, affectionately referring to them as her "Little Treasures". She is also notably protective of her charges, making sure potential adopter's paperwork is in perfect order and checks in on the adopted children and their families as often as she can. Which are the real "Little Treasures", the Stories or the Children? Is she really as caring as she appears?

Oh, this is awesome! Steel dragons were always one of my favorites, and I had a recurring NPC of a steel dragon who disguised herself as a librarian. Books were her horde, and while she'd let people borrow them, she was VERY clear that you didn't want to return the books late. The players didn't find out she was a steel dragon, but were such big fans of her they ended up convincing her to adventure with them. She kept it a secret, but because my party was being the opposite of murder-hobos, and their kindness towards her made her like them, she eventually revealed herself. It wasn't a 'Hey I'm a dragon' thing, but the party was getting some really bad rolls and were getting close to getting TPK'ed, so she went dragon mode and saved them. After saving them, she had to leave(to protect her horde/children now that the bad guys knew she was a dragon) but the party was flabbergasted. And, honestly, if they hadn't been so active and engaged in the roleplay, they wouldn't have befriended a steel dragon to the point she was willing to reveal herself to protect them. Never had a game as good since.

One-shot campaign, level 20+ with legendary feats etc. Entire party is a mix of young and adult Steel Dragons. Legendary thief pickpockets their memory gems not knowing what they are, and it is up to the party to retrieve them. The twist? The levels and abilites/feats that they all have are tied to the memory gems, and the loss of them de-powers them to level 15. Kinda like a Metroidvania type scenario of starting powerful, losing that, and regaining it over an adventure.

@Itachilover1210000 Story time it is! I'll be brief since there's a lot of fluff in between, but I foreshadowed it early. They had to find a Sphinx in order to get info from her, but there was an arcane lock on the door to her lair. There was a number written in blood on the door that would change whenever a party member put their blood on it. The number matched the race of the party member who needed to add their blood, so for example, Half-Elf would be 7, and the number would change to another party member's race. Well, the amnesiac dragon was playing a half-orc, but when the door had the number 6 (for Dragon) on it, everyone was confused since no party members played races that would fit. The half-orc then adds their blood, and the door opens, leading to even greater confusion. Fast forward a few sessions, and the party finds themselves battling a horde of demons and clockworks for control of a resource rich canyon. What they didn't know was that the demons found a slumbering Tarrasque, and in a last-ditch effort to claim victory, teleported it and the party miles into the air. The Tarrasque wakes up, and they have to fight it while falling to their doom. Within the 2 turns of combat, 2 of the 4 are under 10 hp, 1 has failed 2 death saves, and 1 is unconscious, that being the half orc. Right before the Tarrasque kills the player that failed their death saves, a massive gust of wind pushes them out of its reach, and a streak of what looked like living metal tears through the sky to grab the party members and whisk them to safety. It's a steel dragon. They lost their minds because they'd never even heard of them before, and when they landed, the dragon falls hard, creating a crater. The party goes to investigate and offer assistance, but in the crater, there is no dragon, just their slumbering half orc companion.

I thought of a Steel Dragon living as an undertaker, to better understand the sorrow of the short lived races. Perhaps his lair is the graveyard, surrounding forest, and the tunnels of the underdark beneath. You mean how they basically LARP a humanoid, bond with someone then fake their own death and begin the whole cycle anew, without ANY concern for the person they bonded with or their extended family? Or how it is SO ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE to detect a steel dragon when they're not in their dragon form that they might as well not actually be a dragon because their humanoid forms are so totally humanoid? Or how they live to create the greatest works of art, greatest books, greatest musical pieces during their extended LARP-sessions so that later, throughout history, the greatest works of man/elf/dwarvenkind was actually performed by a dragon but nobody will ever know so it's pointless in a narrative sense that it was a dragon to begin with and it robs other species of the grandeur of said wonders since it was actually a dragon doing it. Steel Dragons are trash dragons, made for MC-mentality players/DM-NPCs who want to have a dragon and be mysterious but who cannot be discovered until -they- choose too. Also I hate them.

For the curious, here's a bit more detail on steel dragons in publication: 1) The very first mention of the steel dragon was a unique entity, a singular dragon that was the good counterpart to the evil Grey Dragon, in Dragon Magazine #62. 2) The steel dragon species first appeared in the original Draconomicon, a Forgotten Realms supplment for 2e, after having appeared as "the Greyhawk Dragon" in Greyhawk Adventures. 3) Rules for playing half-dragons with steel or greyhawk dragon heritage would appear in Dragon Magazine #206. 4) The Steel/Greyhawk Dragon split would persist into 3rd edition, with Steel Dragons appearing in Dragons of Faerun and Greyhawk Dragons appearing in Dragon Magazine #339. 5) Their last appearance to date, and the first time they were officially considered Metallic Dragons, was in 4th edition's Draconomicon: Metallic Dragons. This also introduced a new quirk to the species, giving them a strong belief in personal liberty that made them bitter enemies of tyrants. In particular, they often acted as self-appointed guardians against the more tyrannical inclinations of fellow metallic dragons (who becamse less "Always Good" in this edition), which often brought them into conflict with bronze, cobalt and gold dragons.

@@JawmaxBut the dragons’ memory and magic are so strong that they eventually realize what’s happening, and while they are unsettled by this mysterious monster, they are mostly enraged that the thing was steal some of their friends from their cherished memories, so this chaotic good aligned steel dragon disguises themself as a black dragon in order to scare everyone out of town so the False Hydra has nothing to feed on, then the dragon grabs the hydra by one of its many necks and starts to fight it, the party gets involved seeking to stop the supposedly evil dragon only to be confused to see it bravely fighting a hideous multi-headed monster. What do they do from there?

Its an interesting idea. But he got the lore wrong. They build the collection through their life, when they go into the last slumber to relive everything that is them dying. They don't wake up with all their lives and start creating. The creation was part of the journey. There is a lot of things that is not correct here and I heavily recomend watching "What they don't tell you about steel dragons" by MrRhexx as he goes into much better detail about it

This was timely. I read about steel dragons on the wiki when I looked up metallic dragons and decided to run one in a game. I have my group going into Waterdeep to seek out a prodigy artificer and the dragon is one of the guard captains. He's become enthralled with the dynamics of the power struggles in Waterdeep and wants to serve the innocents that may get caught in the crossfire. Every time he leaves an old life he returns as a fresh faced recruit to climb the ranks once more until he's head of the guard himself. His lair is the barracks and prison beneath them. Especially evil prisoners are rumored to go mad in prison, claiming that the halls are maze like and every escape attempt leads them back to their own cell after days of traversing dimly lit passages and dodging patrols. Being able to shift walls has its uses for a dragon determined to keep the peace.

Next things next, ideas on adding Silver Dragons to campaigns. I think what I may do is have an exiled soldier be a silver dragon, in a kingdom that’s been secretly overthrown by the troubling cult of my campaign. I think I may use them as a way to help my players further progress with their destruction of the cult, and at some point need to transform into a dragon to fight this all powerful cultist, while the rest of the part takes out the minions. (Similar to the one Harvest Devil VS Celestials concept.) I think this would be a neat little way to tie another fantastic creature into the little melting pot of whatever my campaign is so far.

So one thing I believe wasn't mentioned is that steel dragons have a unique shapechange. Rather than a simple polymorph effect, they fully and completely become the creature they turn into. To the point where for all intents and purposes they are that creature and dont even consiously know they are a steel dragon. This also has the effect of any effect that would detect or force them to change shape doesn't work making them the only dragon that can enter waterdeep without permission.

I have a dragon character in my campaign setting that, after watching this video, I think I'll be making a steel dragon. This dragon is inspired by a dragon found in JetPack7's Legendary Dragon. Tyr is a terrifying two headed dragon who rules a harsh kingdom to the north with an iron (or steel?) fist. The kingdom is largely governed by his cult of worshippers, the Tyrfang, and the dragon's role in rulership is largely to intimidate his subjects and his enemies beyond his borders to keep the peace. When Tyr was born, he was obviously mutated and deformed, with two heads, three legs and three wings. Tyr also had a monstrous appetite that veered him away from the lawful alignment of his parent and drove him to constantly seek satiation for his wild hunger. When he attempted to eat one of his unhatched siblings, Tyr's parent lashed out in anger. Believing both Tyr and his sibling were mortally wounded, the parent left, grieving and certain both would die. Tyr lived, however, and he grew far faster than any normal dragon would, essentially reaching the size and power of an adult dragon while young, and an ancient dragon while adult. Tyr spends most of his time in one of two forms, the brutal and bloodthirsty leader of a mercenary company called "The Bladed Wing", and the secretive, conniving leader of Tyr's own cult of Tyrfangs. Tyr has two personalities (one "wolf-like", the other "tiger-like") with heir own preferred forms, and they tend to unexpectantly switch between them, leading to situations where Tyr must quickly excuse himself from conversations and meetings as he feels he is about to change from one to the other (think a mix of super heroes having to find excuses to go be super and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, except they are both Mr. Hyde). Tyr must also turn back into a dragon regularly, both to maintain his kingdom and so he can hunt to feed his monstrous appetite. Tyr's unhatched sibling also lived, though never developed beyond being a wyrmling, never even hatching, even. This dragon is incredibly strong magically, and keeps inside its egg which has now been warded with such powerful magic that it is all but unbreakable. This dragon convinced a group of adventurers long ago to help it build a hoard so that it could steep weapons and magic items in its power to be used by future heroes against its brother. This dragon can communicate and see through these items, allowing it to experience the world safely despite its physical deficiencies, and act as guide and aid to heroes. Tyr's primary goal is to track down and get revenge on the parent that abandoned him, which would certainly lead to that steel dragon's death. His brother, meanwhile, is trying to stop the from happening. The parent being a steel dragon would explain why Tyr has had such trouble finding them, and I'd imagine this parent is still unaware that either of their children survived the tragedy that led to them abandoning them, otherwise they would have long ago tried to reunite and reconcile with their children. This dragon may have heard of Tyr, but Tyr's rapid growth would make it hard to imagine this two headed dragon is the same as the two headed dragon that was their son. Tyr and the Unhatched both being steel dragons draws attention to how their unique disabilities make it difficult for them to live the lives their parent likely expected of them, yet they each found a way to make it work. Tyr has two personas that, while there are certainly complications with, he has managed to juggle, and even if he can't be in human form all the time, he has managed not to jeopardize either of these identities. Tyr's evil, notably, is not due to his disability, but due to how his parent reacted to it, and his desire for revenge. The Unhatched, meanwhile, has found its own unique solution to its problem. Sure, it can't turn into a human itself and walk the world, but it can still experience humanoid life through the people that it has entrusted with its magic weapons and items. I imagine if their parent could see them today, they'd actually be very proud of them, which just adds to the tragedy of their family drama.

I've been running a homebrew campaign world for my wife to have a single player adventure in since 2010. It's been a multigenerational world, she's essentially a humanoid in an unaging body her teacher/father figure created for her before he passed. He was based on her irl father, who had passed almost a year before, and the first part of the campaign helped her come to terms with it. she's leveled very slowly over the years, both in world and out. She's had 23 companions of her original race (hylian, if that works means anything to ya). She recognized the first one because he had her teachers ring, a steel band with an engraving of a book on a shield. She has outlived each companion, some by battle, some by age, and yet she's always found someone soon after wearing that same ring, and they always say they've just had it as long as they can remember. She thinks it's me metagaming, I'm pretty sure. In about two more irl years I'll be making the reveal as she hits level 20. Think she'll like it?

I absolutely love that you took the time to do the steel dragon. They're one of my favorites, though I do prefer the forgotten realms version of them. One thing I would add as a note, is that steel dragons have a higher magic potential than any other dragon of their type. As even wyrmlings can cast spells, example 3.5, I do appreciate the increase in charisma which would help with the number of spells given in Fizban's treasury of Dragons with innate spellcasting. I would still put a note of either giving more spells known or more times per day due to their innate magical nature. But thank you for your contribution and I can't wait until the next one.

Best steel dragon story I have is, weirdly, from 4e. Had a player who ran a steel dragon character (unknown to her-she thought she was human swordmage) searching for her “vanished” mentor. Eventually met her brother (whom she nearly slew for banditry-oh, the fun family reunion stories they can share, later!-neither of them knowing the family connection at the time), discovered she was adopted by her mentor, discovered she *wasn’t* adopted… or rather she was, but by her own father (meaning her mentor was her father), followed up on the old lead from the dragon she nearly killed who’s father was missing, discovered they had the same father (said dragon apologized for the banditry; he was cursed and “couldn’t transform and was supposed to take care of his sister, but his father died before they could be introduced and- wait, what was your father/mentor name again??? Ooooohhh-“) and found the hag who had knowledge of their dad, got the knowledge, destroyed said hag for attempting to enslave the PCs and finally found their dad as a dream breath dracolich that he’d become to thwart a killing curse targeting their family. Together the three (with the other PCs and other PCs’ important family members) managed to destroy the curse and restore the dad to life. She eventually inherited the title of Empress in Imaskar (a great investment that can’t possibly go wrong, later) while working to fully Imaskari and Mulhorandi people together as one (it was a complex project). The elf wizard eventually found his mom and took over the pirate isles. The half-elf monk/rune priest somehow survived long enough to become a giant purple marble (uh, it… makes more sense than it sounds) and recover his baby sister from being a manabeast into being a horrifying fey-themed super hero in their homeland of Turmish. The artificer had no neat backstory or connections and just wanted to be (and was) the Empress’ Hand. The bard faded into maybe never having existed or maybe the Feywild, who knows. The sorcerer/warlock decided they were evil (partnering with their devil sire) and, after fighting their former friends (the other PCs), fell into the Abyss on purpose destroying an evil artifact on the way to their doom. The druid/barbarian decided to become a god of mongrelfolk and did (also joining the burgeoning pantheon of famously anti-theist Imaskar).

This gave me a new idea for one of my NPCs! An elf that's family has befriended a steel dragon over the centuries. The steel dragon was approaching Reflection just as the elf was born. It decided to spend it's final life as his mentor/caretaker. Neither know if it's up to his disposition or influence of the steel dragon, but the elf grows up to be a scholar and archivist (not sure of the specialization yet). The steel dragon decides to entrust it's identity to him and together they begin the recording process together. Now the elf's role is to distribute the knowledge and memorabilia. Either for fun exposition purposes, flavor, or to put him in places at appropriate times. He comes with most places i designate for exposition or flavor gsksgksosb

On a Recharge 6 they can delve into one of those lives randomly and use one feature from that class as it fits in their action economy. 15:30 I just had a wonderful idea for a location. A massive hall/mausoleum/library/museum filled with the works of every steel dragon. Mind you, not necessarily the original works, but a perfect duplicate. What's special about the location itself is that, were one of the originals about to be damaged or even destroyed, it swaps it with the copy it holds. The entire place uses spatial magic of absurdly high level, and can be considered a demiplane of theoretically infinite size. A few other aspects: Each section from a particular steel dragon is a grand doorway with their name inscribed across the top, and enters into a hall lined with shelves. Separating sections of shelving are statues of every form they ever took, which magically warp to show how their appearance changed over that form's lifespan before cycling back to the beginning. This includes a statue of their draconic form at the entrance to each hall. The main hallway branches off every 10m, with hallways leading off it representing each crystal sphere on which these dragons originate. Then, walking down one of those halls, you have the doorways to each dragon's respective knowledge along each one. One side has each dragon ordered by date of birth starting from the oldest, and the other each dragon by date of death, starting from the most recent. A hall for one dragon can show up in multiple of the halls for the various worlds, yet leads to the same place. When leaving, you will come out the same entrance you went in. The main point of the same entrance being able to show up in multiple of the world halls is due to the possibility of inter-world travel. Easiest way to access this realm is to enter the city of doors and then go find it, as an entrance is hidden there. Upon arrival, don't even try to damage anything, as all the statues I'm the mausoleum are alive and will kill you. Final note, the place was made, and is owned by an ancient dragon of immense power who simply loves knowledge, and is only a small fraction of their total collection. Think Trayzn the Infinite from wh40k, but immortal dragon.

@@Ajehy My party was tolled to look for a person called ''The silver merchant'' (story plot) We tracked him town to an old mansion and when we entered, we ware greeted by his butler who waited on us. He led us to his masters room and inside was an old Steel Dragon in his dragon form and he asked the Barbarian: Do you remember me? In our Champaign we PC's have some memories from our former life. And the Barbadian's former life was the one that raised the Steel Dragon from a egg We only knew about his Silver merchant cover but the DM talked about the dragon having paintings in his room of all his former covers

I had an ancient steel dragon working as a deckhand on a merchant ship that my murderhobo party was sailing on. Then the murderhobo party decided that they wanted to take the ship and all of its cargo so they can become rich, the steel dragon was forced to transform, grab two of the party members and just dived THROUGH the ship splitting it in half drowning everybody and giving it the perfect way to fake its death. I'm probably forgetting a few details but I'll probably remember them if anyone asks.

A player of mine drew The Void from the Deck of Many things, so I was doing some research on Elysium (where they were imprisoned) and came across Guardinals. Honestly would love some coverage on these super cool celestial animal warriors!

Imagine reading a DnD campaign book, only for it to be revealed it’s a steel dragon’s autobiography. The player characters are people that the dragon is remembering during its final moments.

My idea for a Steel Dragon lair is he is a Tour Guide for a city that had gone largely unnoticed but had a unique quirk that makes the town unique. So he moved in and saw how this might benefit others and began a tourism guild within the city, wanting everyone else to experience all he has here. His lair is just his shop, where any "treasure" he might have is stored in a few chests of holding that when opened only contain books unless a magic phrase is said. Or just opened by the dragon.

So a being pretending to be a creature they are not is selling to beings about to pretend they are something they are not. That checks out.

Just thought of a great idea... You could make a character based off of nimona using a steel drag as a base... Not sure if it completely works but to me it could be at the final part of their life after they went into hibernation so they are less inclined to be just human... It's an idea.... I didn't say it 100% fits... Plus it's DND so uo to each person to decide how things fit...

Alternatively, they're a hatchling or barely sub-Wyrmling-level and only have their instinctive grasp over their powers, with none of their parents' influence or training due to shenanigans.

Many years ago a couple of friends and I developed a Shadowrun campaign where every fixer hid their eyes (sunglasses, lighting affects, etc) until the last one whose pupils were shaped link gold daggers. The twist being was that they had been working for a gold dragon the entire time, but it was in different disguises. While watching this video I thought it would be fun to do kind of the same. A group of Steel Dragons living in a large city work together as the "quest givers" for an adventuring party. Maybe even each dragon, in turn, accompanying the party on their part of the quest.

I'm thinking of a Steel Dragon that went little too far with the Vaulting and forgot they are a dragon at all. They may need to find an artifact to unlock their own memories.

There's something so beautifully sentimental about steel dragon hoards- every item is undoubtedly personal and meaningful, not just shiny or 'valuable' in a more materialistic sense. They're method actors of dragons, and its so fun to wonder what they'd value most out of each life story.

For anyone who wants a more indepth view in steel deagin. Including some things that seem to have been mossed here I recomend watching "What they don't tell you about steel dragons" by MrRhexx For example the fact that steel dragons transformation ability is way way stronger than normal dragon transformations. So giving them the shange shape spell to represent that is hinestly really supperficial and not at all lore accurate.

Why the hell has WotC ditched this dragon? This sounds like awesome story fuel. Like, I could think of running three campaigns with this character to throw off my players, especially if they keep notes. This sounds like a philosophical gold mine, like the idea I have for this dragon is one that, from birth, has tried to learn and understand human concepts of Morality, starting off as a dickish brat that does some dickish pranks, to a raider lord, to a tyrant king, to a Cult leader, and then switch it to Neutral when he becomes a Merchant Noble with kids. Hell, end it off with him being an elderly townsguard and beloved community member of a large city, with thr adventurers finding out that the raider they scared off, the philosopher explorer and this townguard - all from different campaigns - were all the same dragon trying to learn why humans live by these strange rules. One idea for this dragon's mind vault could be a physical vault, with different rooms, and magic mirrors that depict his past lives like paintings on a wall Dorian Grey style. Sure, it'd need so much work to pull it off right, but HOO DADDY THAT PAYOFF WILL BE SOMETHING GREAT!!!

WotC technically didn't. As DD mentioned in the intro, steel dragons can be confused for other metallic dragons, such as silver. In one of the modules, the party is introduced to a duergar who is actually a steel dragon in disguise. The duergar is given silver dragon stats, but mentions in a sidebar that the DM has to swap all the cold abilities and immunities for acid.

This was my first thought, too! Depending on the dragon and what he considers his lair to be, he might even be able to fight evil without transforming, leaving it ambiguous which resident is the dragon, without even needing an extra disguise!

Some random ideas I had to include steel dragons in a game; An evil necromancer finds his way into a graveyard and starts digging out corpses to add to his growing army. But a steel dragon that faked their death was very recently buried, but their teleportation spell went wrong, so now that the necromancer found them, to hide their identity, they have to pretend that they're an undead risen by a necromancer, as they try to escape through increasingly comedic means that always end up failed. So basically reverse weekend at bernie's. Another idea is a steel dragon that lived as a psychiatrist in a past persona, that was heavily fascinated by psychopath serial killers. In their next persona, they start mysteriously kidnapping people in the middle of nights, disguising theirself as an old, almost Mr. Hyde-like persona, using their poisonous breath weapon to knock people out, only to gruesomely butcher the bodies, as they start developing truly sick tendencies. Rumors start swirling about an old man with the ability to instantly put people to sleep with their breath.
