The Toyota Celsior / Lexus LS400 restoration project continues with brand new OEM motor mounts, which is probably one of the most difficult and tedious general repair items on the UCF20 platform.
The pain and suffering is almost certainly worth it since these bushings are such a critical component when it comes to the legendary ride quality of this car. Join me as a I spend hours of my day, dirty and tired to answer the question: Are motor mounts worth doing or is it a overrated?
Let's find out!

You are a brave man. Motor mounts is something I would pay a shop to do lol. Loved the water test. I'm gonna try it on my LS 430. It's an 06 with only 80k miles.

It certainly isn't a job for the feint of heart lol. In hindsight it was a lot more difficult than I anticipated, but it only took about 6 hours in total. Granted... it was 6 hours for about 12 bolts in total lol. Dude I'd love to see that!

Did mine this year. At 185,000, the original mounts were shot. They were completely broken in half. Motor mounts did not fix the vibration so I continued the project by replacing the transmission mount. It was also broken in half. Had to Jack the trans up 2 inches to line up with the new OEM mount. My jaw dropped when I started the car. I had to rev it and look at the RPMS to know it was running. Night and day difference.

I love your invention of the "suck-score" . ...I wish that I'd written down all of my (96 LS-400) repair scored on an old Amazon box with Sharpie over many years...

Thank you very much for making this video. Will be following your guidance on my 95 Celsior and stoked to poke around your channel for other Celsior vids/guides. Planning on doing the motor mount and trans mount at the same time, hopefully will save some time now that I know what I'm looking at. In case you were curious, the alt can be swapped fairly easily from below if you ever need to. I upgraded to the 430 alt this way. Just unbolt that power steering line like you did and fanagle it out the bottom after undoing the wiring and belt. (Make sure you install new wiring and a higher rated ANL fuse).

Just found your channel tonight man. Amazing stuff you’re doing here. I’m a Subaru nerd but a few months ago started restoring a GT4 ST-185 I inherited. Throughout that process it’s become abundantly clear that Yoda engineers are absolutely brilliant, especially for the era my Celica is from.

Dude, thanks so much! Glad to have you. I’ve only owned one Subaru, but like you I’ve become a bit of a Toyota lover too. I still have a soft spot for BMW too :-) Never driven a celica but a turbo i4 manual sounds like a hoot!

Hello JJ, Here in Australia we use a 50 cent coin which has twelve small straight egdes, so it won't roll if balanced on its edge.....if the coin stays upright on its EDGE on the plenum while idling, the engine speed and mounts are good. Other Lexus ads on TV had a record player in the boot playing as one drove along....I haven't tried this of course!!! Cheers from sunny Australia!

Dude, was rooting for you when you tried to take out the mount. Also, screaming at your for turning the first nut the wrong direction. We've all been there. I recently did that on an outer tie rod bolt and broke it! Had to take it to a mechanic to drill it out.

Nice job. Looks like somebody changed all the OEM hose clamps to those worm drive screw on type. No bueno. I would swap them out for the OEM Toyota hose clamps

Bro, you’re not the only one tightening nuts by accident. I’ve done it countless time and think how much of an idiot I am 😂 By the way, could these be causing the vibration during idle (when in gear) and vibration during the transition from 1st to 2nd gear ?

@@JJinMotionYou should even be able to rev to 6k rpm and the water still won't move. What's funny is that my car passes the water test, but I have a crazy shift clunk and hard cold starts. I'll be doing the mounts soon on my LS400 and the suck score makes me a little wary of the job... but I think it's a good system. 😂 I'm going to be doing the guibos as soon as I can scrape together the cash. That will help with the clunk.
@JJinMotion
@JJinMotion 9 месяцев назад
That’s so crazy! I didn’t try to rev it hard but I will. And yeah, I bet the gubios would be helpful especially when you have to shift quickly from reverse to drive. Haha glad the suck score is a useful metric :-)
@Warpedsmac
@Warpedsmac 8 месяцев назад
Good plan is to replace ALL rubber at around the same time...this helps diagnosing issues in the future... FYI the clunk comes from the diff carrier bushes in the rear subframe. Cheers from Australia!@@christiannakamura1187

@@Warpedsmac I've done the single diff mount bushing underneath, and one guibo. Those bushings are hard to remove without a press! Next are the rear guibo and the rear diff mount bushings you talked about. I'm curious, do you have a Celsior or LS400 in Australia?
