We ran into Mads and his children in the Faroe Islands and he was kind enough to sit for an interview. In this part he recalls the first person in the family to get the sailing bug (it's not who you think it is) and his initial voyages and adventures. From the family boat to his own sailing dinghy, Mads hones his skills and falls deeper in love with the simple act of sailing. Join us as he explains how he made his pocket sized dream a full blown reality.

This man captures the wonderful Joie de vie that the Danish people, in particular, and Scandinavians, in general, possess. I love his self-confidence too, another trait of the Danes. He loves sailing and is proud to tell you that he cries with joy over it. So many American men would never admit to being so wonderfully human. He doesn't need a large boat, the boat he has, to him, is the boat he enjoys. It's about the sail, not the boat or the destination. Wonderful interview.

Mads was so descriptive about his feelings towards boating and life in general. I especially like the non-racing-to-win philosophy. I totally agree. Thanks for a great in-depth video interview.

+scs130773 I love that part also...alone but not lonesome. It really was such an honour to interview Mads. Also, the man makes a mean stove top brownie! Hmmm, perhaps that's why he likes sailing solo so much...he doesn't have to share the brownies! Ha! ⚓-Monique

Mads Bo folk both defines and expands my feelings in sailing. If life is such that you cannot sail full time crossing oceans and circumnavigating the world, there is still a self-fulfilling lesser goal to strive for. Finding one's niche in life is made easier when you listen to men like Mads. Thank you.
@drakeParagon
@drakeParagon 8 лет назад
+Mike Woodford We're glad you enjoyed it Mike. I found him quite inspiring as well. The big dream for many is to do that circumnavigation, but smaller hops can be just as fulfilling, if not more so, and certainly more attainable. Drake and I were glad our paths crossed and hope to meet again. ⚓-Monique

I was taken sailing estuaries in a GP14 dinghy aged 6, hated it, had no control. Aged 29 I bought a Halcyon 23 and did France and Belgium. Then a Folk Dancer 27 and did West Africa, Senegal and Gambia, The Canaries and Madeira. Single handed, total control, the further offshore I was the safer I felt.

WTF Drake ? Though the interview was interesting, when are we gonna see the next chapter in your cruise ? You left us hanging in Gloucester ! Do what you do best ! Your chronicled videos of the Real cruising life is head and shoulders above the rest, and this is what I look forward to. @drakeParagon
@drakeParagon 8 лет назад
+Ed Hastings Hey Ed, at the beginning of our seasons we spend time gathering footage (out of the over 1500 hours we shot) then arranging it so that it can be whittled down and edited. Separating footage makes it easier to handle, both for our computers and for us. While doing this between seasons, instead of posting nothing, we like to put up interviews, boat tours, and other experiences we've had while cruising. I think interviews are especially important and are, to date, some of the most popular videos we upload. More important is what we hear from our viewers. When we shared An Interview/Tour With Ben Stookey ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wrTvbM3TGe0.html (our most popular video by far) the reaction was surprising even to us. The comments were lovely, but our inbox exploded with emails from young people. One guy in particular stands out as he shared that he had always wanted to live aboard a sailboat while keeping his job, but didn't think it was possible. It was inspiring to him to see someone not that much older than him living his dream...it made it all seem possible. The same is now happening with Mads' interview. People are writing and saying that Mads' story is inspiring them...that they see now it is possible to reach their goal of sailing by changing the shape and scope of what cruising means to them. That makes all the work worth it to Drake and I. I read that you feel perhaps these interviews are a bit out of context since they don't follow the same time line as our voyaging story. However, we feel that interviews and tours are rather timeless. It's less about the location and more about the person, their boat, and their story. That being said, we always appreciate your comments and critiques and thank you so much for watching. Fair winds to you... ⚓-Monique

It's person centered therapy. Sorry for the kryptic comment, but watching that interview Drake totally reminded me of the old Carl Rogers videos I used to watch while training to be a therapist. His interview technique is so calm and he just follows the lead of the person he interviews. Made me laugh but makes for a great interview.
