In this episode, Mads Bo Falk talks about the various places he has visited and his boat Mathilde, a Polaris Drabant 26. He also explains what he calls 'The Freedom Equation' which is something he falls back on to evaluate the best way to maximise the time he can spend on the water. This husband and father of two has found a way, in the midst of a busy life, to make his sailing dreams possible.

I am a Brit living in USA for 20 years. Frugal Brit nature caught up a little bit (not much) in the American always want bigger and better rat race. How inspiring and motivational to hear Mads freedom equation. I really need to introduce that philosophy back into my life. Thankyou both for such a great reminder of direction.

What a great personality, that typifies his Danish heritage too. Every time I hear one of our U.S. conservative political candidates say, "we don't want to be Denmark" I ask, "Have you ever been to Denmark?" The quality of life in Scandinavia matches Mads' philosophy. Imagine, a violinist and music teacher, living in a country with 60% income tax and 25% VAT has a beautiful sail boat, a beautiful family and happiness. He aspires to "be". He has no aspirations to be a radical, or an unproductive citizen. He seeks happiness and has found it. He seeks a family life and has found it. He seeks a profession that he enjoys and has found it. This man could be a motivational speaker. I love his statement, "I'm too busy just being". Happy Sailing Mads. I love the Freedom Equation !!! Spot on.

+Michael Kallelis Thanks Michael, We're looking forward to someday bringing you stories of our voyages in Denmark! :) We have a lot of Greenlandic and Faroese friends who went to school in Denmark, and many of whom live there today. psst... We also have a another sailor friend in Denmark (whose videos you have probably seen :) who we are really hoping will visit us in Faroe this Summer to help us do some voyaging and filming for each of our RU-vid channels.. :)

OK I could write a book about this serious of interviews but I think I will make it short and simple. This is by far the best video commentary about sailing that I have ever come across from the stand point of honesty, experience and temperament. I should also say that your final product far exceeds anything that you have done so far. Your interview/editing skills have improved dramatically, by letting the subject be the absolute focal point of the conversation. Thank you very much Antonio Go Bean Town, and Taxassachusetts

I enjoyed Mads' brilliant insight that Freedom = Opportunities, minus the time necessary to make the boat ready, and minus the time necessary to earn the money to pay for the boat. A corollary might be that if the time necessary, for fixing the boat and for paying for the boat, exceeds the boat's Opportunities, then you've got the dreaded Freedom Deficit - the boat has put you in a sailing prison. The Freedom Deficit explains the numerous big, fancy, expensive boats that never leave their slips or moorings. Jim Hansen

Mr Mads you are an intelligent man for sure,and I am sure you must be aware you sailed around Britain more so than England.The scots and welsh and irish are always at pains to point out they are not English. A small point but one which some folk get rather bothered about.happy sailing to you

I bet you will spend much more time cruising than others who are spending more of their time working on their bigger and more complicated boats. I always get a kick how the emotions and rationalizations are so similar between flying and sailing. I don't “want” that new navigation system I “need” that system... you know, to be safer. And all your friends laugh and nod in agreement because they know the truth. There's always a way you can rationalize why you need it. I guess it's sort of like a West-Sail. A 34ft. W/S is good, but a 42ft. W/S is bigger-better-safer, and of course if you are bigger-better-safer then you can do more things and go more places... in the name of safety of course. Good to see the “rationalization disease” is alive and well. ;)

Great interview, In principle I like his "Freedom Equation" but unless he breaks it down to a number, percent, or fraction of income vs time vs expenses its all very subjective. I can see a book written on this subject alone though... ;-)
