A little impromptu improvisation on the Vintage Vibe electric piano (J3PO Signature Model).
Vintage Vibe is making some serious electric pianos these days; pianos that rival the old Rhodes of the 70s. These pianos are a joy to play and the keyboard action is great. For more information on this particular J3PO signature model, please inquire with Vintage Vibe: www.vintagevibe.com/pages/j3po
If you like the music in this video, please subscribe to my RU-vid channel and check out my music on Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, etc. (both J3PO and Julian Pollack). Visit www.j3po.net for the latest tour dates and releases (music, synthesizer preset libraries, and educational material).
***
The audio was recorded direct to Pro Tools through a UA Apollo. The piano was plugged into my pedal board: Strymon Mobius (for the warble and drive), Strymon Timeline (delay), and Strymon Big Sky (reverb). For a completely dry example of what the instrument sounds like, please check out the second half of my "unboxing and first playing" video.

Julian has worked closely as a sound designer with keyboard/synth companies Nord Keyboards, Sequential, and Oberheim, and has created factory presets for the Prophet 5, the Oberheim OB-X8, Nord Stage 3, and many other commercially available keyboards. In addition to these hardware keyboard companies, Julian also has done sound design for Universal Audio (most recently, Opal, a new wavetable synthesizer), Softube, Cherry Audio, and Spectrasonics.

What a glorious sound, no danger of the Rhodes ever becoming extinct!

Well I would love one of these, and a Rhodes, and maybe a Valente and the Vintage vibe clav too, kerching! - I love that they exist again. Rhodes branded hardware is back too. However the Rhodes sound really mainly lives on in physical modelling software and sample instruments. That's where 99.9% of players will experience the Rhodes sounds at their fingertips. More people than ever can play these lovely sounds. Of course here it's completely real. Real tines the whole shebang!

The voicing switch is revolutionary, i would not even consider buying any other rhodes alternatives to be completely honest, the built in effects in the rhodes MK8 aren't that important. I would rather have a strymon/empress FX pedalboard for that kind of money

Wish I could share this feeling inside. You probably remember it, but it's that feeling of satisfaction, joy... when two things come together so well. From the outside, it looks and sounds like the absolutely perfect match between artist and instrument. Your talent with the tools under your fingers, is something not everyone gets to experience, and it's got your *&$kin' name on it. Congrats to you brotha. New fan, and look forward to doin' some catchin' up. Thanks for sharing.

Wow, the dynamics of it is something else. It's got just the tiny bit of distortion when you play harder. Just makes the note more saturated and rich. And it goes soft and pliable. I love it so much.

I’ve played one of these at the shop for a few hours with the VVC and I just can’t imagine a better electric piano. I’ve owned a lot of Rhodes (currently own a 1971 and a 1975), and it’s on a whole other planet.

I thin k some people don't really grasp the difference in the feel of using somthing different than an basic keyboard. Like I have such a hard time to explain to people, even to ones who dable in playing instruments, why I much prefer listening to electric pianos and analog synthesizers over a normal as keyboard. Since the keyboard could technically reproduce all those sounds.

Sounds fantastic! The guys at Vintage Vibe from Rockaway NJ have done a fantastic job reinventing the tine piano. There's a company across the pond who seem to think they are the be all and end all of the electric tine piano because they own the name. The Vintage Vibe is lighter, sounds better, has better features including the new variable voice control. For my money, the MK8 is not even close to Vintage Vibe but it is more expensive when you consider you can buy a basic 64 key VV for 2/3 the price.

Looked at the Vintage Vibe link. I love how this model captures the Rhodes sound but seems to have more of the Wurly 200a footprint and initial appearance. OK... we want details! Video please! How did this whole thing come about. What kind of input did you have on the design and features? Are there any features they left out that you wanted? Does this have midi?

@j3po784

It's a completely different experience than playing a Nord or a sampled instrument. This is the real thing. Rolls Royce of modern electric pianos. The feel, the sound, the look...it's all there.

@@j3po784 I can get some pretty good tones out of Lounge Lizard, especially with a nice amp like Black Rooster's Omnitec, and some of the Kush stuff, as well as Plugin Alliance analog saturators, comps etc, but this is the real thing.. Though I can get close in a mix situation, the differences are still evident and I think there's quite a way to go. Although with ITB I can layer a Rhodes performance done in midi with all sorts fm and physically modelled chime/bell sounds/ tuned perc like hang drums and kalimbas and kind of create mini orchestrations that augment the existing sound in all sorts of ways. Epecially when you split the voicings up and divide them between instruments. So, for me, the difference is similar to a fine exquisitely drawn picture done with a pencil, the Rhodes, and some graphics on a HD monitor with millions of different colours, the sort of stuff I was referring to doing. Equally valid, but different. With Analog synths though... To my ears, the sort of stuff Gmedia, Softube and Uhe have created is virtually indistinguishable from the real thing, for most intents and purposes. Although this is probably because analog synths are considerably simpler in terms of the tones and colors you can get from them when compared to electromechanical and acoustic instruments. Great playing by the way. You should do more stuff like this. Maybe blaze through a few standards . It would be cool to hear your interpretations.

How do you prefer to amplify it live in the studio? I want an electric piano, but sometimes I feel like I need to go all the way to the suitcase amplifier to get the authentic sound. But, $$$…
@j3po784
@j3po784 Год назад
I prefer to go direct in the studio. I've been on a lot of sessions where we mic the suitcase. 9 times out of 10, we'll end up going with the direct signal, processing from there. Maybe we'll mix in a bit of the console. But it's rare in a studio situation to use the mic'd stereo amp only. Seems like it would be the cooler option, but in practice, most of the time it's not. Live, in a club and concert setting, it's completely different. The suitcase console is everything, it fills the room with a certain magic. Kinda like having a Leslie (although in the studio you better be sure to mic that Leslie and not go direct 🤣)
