During week 7 of the 1988 NFL season, the NFL and NBC, for some inexplicable reason, forgot to schedule a late game. And when it came to the battle between the Miami Dolphins and the San Diego Chargers, chaos ensued because of it. This is the story behind that madness.

That date was Game 2 of the 1988 World Series, which was also broadcast on NBC. But that was a night game, so it's not at all impossible to squeeze a late NFL game in there, but that might have been the thinking.
@leogetz3570
@leogetz3570 Год назад
yeah, that's what I was thinking, that NBC cleared the slate so they could broadcast the world series, then realized they could squeeze the game in. Worse case scenario, NBC switches to baseball if the NFL games runs long for everyone outside of the Miami and San Diego markets

Ah yes, 1988...the season I actually got excited because my team beat the Raiders and Chargers, two teams that owned them, and I thought that meant something. Until they lost 6 of the last 7 games to drop from 5-4 to 6-10. Whoops...

You did a previous video how when CBS used to schedule late afternoon games on Sundays when CBS is covering the Men's Final of the U.S. Open and how in 1982 they came to their senses. From 1982 to 1993, the NFL would not schedule any games when the NFC is the road team the Sunday after Labor Day. And from 1998 to 2014, the NFL would not schedule any games when the AFC is the road team the Sunday after Labor Day. (Which in every year except for 1998 and 2000 was Week 1 of the regular season.)

Maybe the reason that NBC didn’t schedule any 4:00 games is because they had another sporting event to air at that time. Heck, they probably scheduled only single header games earlier in the season when they covered the 1988 Summer Olympics.

Ah yes. WCAU-TV (Channel 10, then-CBS owned and operated and an NBC O & O since Sept. 10, 1995) in Philly had the Eagles-Browns game followed by 49ers-Rams at 1:00 and 4:00 PM respectively while KYW-TV (Channel 3, then an NBC affiliates and a CBS O & O since 9/10/'95) had the aforementioned Chargers-Dolphins game (the network switches were the result of a 1994 merger between CBS and Westinghouse where they sold WCAU-TV to GE, then NBC's parent company).

This is very similar to what NBC did in 2007 with the Stanley Cup Playoffs but with the early game. Instead of showing the early game on April 14th between Pittsburgh & Ottawa followed by Atlanta (who are now the Winnipeg Jets) & the NY Rangers as part of a Stanley Cup playoff tripleheader with the Western Conference getting the prime time game, NBC decided not to bother to schedule Pittsburgh-Ottawa for the majority of the country on NBC with the exception of Pittsburgh & instead showed an American Le Mans Series sports car race from Long Beach. This was because NBC's contract with the ALMS stated that NBC needed to show every race they had the rights to live, regardless of what time it started. The race was supposed to start at 10:30 AM PT/1:30 PM ET which put it at the same start time as Ottawa-Pittsburgh. What ended up happening was that NBC bumped Ottawa-Pittsburgh for the rest of the country to Versus (which later became NBCSN before being shut down at the beginning of 2022) so that people could still watch. This wasn't the only broadcasting controversy involving NBC & the Stanley Cup Playoffs that season as NBC gave the NHL their version of the "Heidi" game by inexplicably cutting off the start of overtime in what would be the series clinching game in the Eastern Conference Finals between Ottawa & Buffalo for the majority of the country to show the Preakness.
@danielanderson4726
@danielanderson4726 Год назад
CBC was planning to air that game too and I'd say they would have protested moving the game for an American Le Mans Series sports car race from Long Beach because NBC's contract with the ALMS stated that NBC needed to show every race they had the rights to live, regardless of what time it started. So HNIC got what it wanted, while NBC was able to do the race live followed by the Rangers-Trashers game (even though NBC had timeslot exclusivity, that couldn't occur due to HNIC wanting the game in Ottawa, so NBC started it's game at 3:30). TSN then picked up NBC's feed of Rangers-Trashers rather than sending a crew to Atlanta.
@WaltGekko
@WaltGekko Год назад
The part about the Preakness telecast was a contractual commitment NBC had with the Triple Crown tracks. They were required to start the Preakness telecast at that point (after having preliminary race coverage on VS/NBCSN).
@danielanderson4726

@@WaltGekko Although you wonder if the NHL would have rather had NBC air the Preakness first then the series clinching game in the Eastern Conference Finals between Ottawa & Buffalo (it would have started at 7:15pm, also good for HNIC.

I remember one week I think in the 90s before the Rams and Raiders moved when there was no late game on either network in the LA market. I think the Rams were at home, didn't sell out and CBS had the doubleheader with no other late game.
@danielanderson4726
@danielanderson4726 10 месяцев назад
@@bbigjohnson069 If i remember right, in 1991, CBS had to move a Vikings-Patriots game (Jim Nantz, Hank Stram) to 4pm because the other game the Rams were at home, didn't sell out and CBS had the doubleheader with no other late game, because the Lions-49ers game had been canceled due to wildfires. Vikings-Patriots aired in the east, south and midwestern areas while the Rams game aired out West while KCBS aired the Vikings-Patriots game due to the blackout. And that game lasted so long, they had to preempt 60 Minutes and air the World Series at 8pm. KNBC meanwhile, decided to air the Browns-Chargers (Don Criqui, Bob Trumpy) also at 4pm, even though they could show the Seahawks-Steelers game (Mel Proctor, Joe Namath).

The Dolphins’ default home starting time should have been 4 pm anyway-at least before they put a canopy over most of the seats. It’s usually far less comfortable at 1 pm in Miami. The Dolphins only had a small number of early afternoon home games in their AFL years, but many more after the merger.

This makes me wonder if in April of 1988, the NFL and NBC thought there was a possibility of MLB scheduling Game 2 of the World Series for the 4:00 slot, since during this era a Mid-Afternoon weekend World Series game wasn't out of the question, although it wound up being that 1987 was the last season with a mid-afternoon World Series. The NFL was willing to waive the continuous coverage rule if an high prestige sporting event conflicted. (Until 2015, CBS rarely had games scheduled at 4:00 Week 1 b/c of the US Open).Yet, prior to 1988, NBC/NFL let local broadcasters take over the 4:00 games in the local markets when NBC had a 4:00 World Series game, but based on my research, it appears by the 1987 NFL contract, they eliminated this, thus the NFL/NBC possibly needing to leave that slot open for the World Series. But, even if the MLB was late on announcing their postseason schedule, they still should've announced it by Mid August, giving the NFL more than enough notice to move a NBC 1:00 game to the 4:00 window.
@johnmanier7968
@johnmanier7968 Год назад
There have been no such conflicts since 1984, which featured the last Sunday afternoon World Series game-and it started at 4:45 pm on NBC (Padres-Tigers, Game 5). NBC ended up airing Steelers-49ers instead of the World Series in Pittsburgh and San Francisco, but released Bills-Seahawks to other stations in Buffalo and Seattle. The last early afternoon Sunday WS game was Game 2 in 1975 (Reds-Red Sox). Game 7 in 1975 was originally scheduled for an early Sunday afternoon start, but 3 days of rainouts pushed it to Wednesday night. Game 7 in 1976 (Yankees-Reds) was also supposed to start at 1 ET, but the Reds swept in 4.

The continuous rule I believe started with the 1979 season after a year earlier there was at least one week the Jets and Giants BOTH had home games (Jets were at Shea Stadium and Giants in The Meadowlands then) at 1:00 PM, resulting in New York not getting ANY game at 4:00 PM local time. After 1978, for many years either the Jets or Giants would have to be scheduled for 4:00 PM Eastern Time no matter what, resulting often in one or the other playing at home at 4:00 PM. The rule was modified a bit in the late 1990's when CBS had US Open Tennis coverage in Week 1 or 2 where CBS had no late game and FOX in that situation was allowed to bring in a late game in markets that normally in that circumstance would not get one. There also was (I believe) Week 5 in 1989 where because NBC had an A's-Blue Jays American League Championship Series game in the 4:00 PM Eastern Time slot, there was NO 4:00 PM ET game on NBC, resulting that in NFC markets that had a home team playing at 1:00, they had a game on CBS then AND a game on NBC at 1:00 and only the ALCS game and NO NFL game at 4:00. That would never happen now.

Then in 2006 NBC took over Sunday night football and made it huge, and that same year ESPN took over Monday night football and in my opinion went down hill.
