At Super Bowl XX, NBC decided, for their pregame show, to air a minute of nothingness. No advertisements. No talking. No entertainment. No nothing. Just a minute of pure silence, in what was known as the Silent Minute. And to the shock of everyone, the Silent Minute took the country by storm. This is the story behind NBC and one of the craziest broadcasting ideas in Super Bowl history
NOTE: Due to a copyright claim on the music during the Silent Minute, I had to mute the sound for a 30-second period. No footage was altered, none of my dialogue was altered, and nothing of the like was altered; just 30 seconds had to be muted

Johnny Carson also did a version of this as a comedy bit. He said during the B-segment (after the monologue) they would take a minute so people could go to the bathroom. Instead of a clock, however, there was a crawl "hypnotizing" the viewers and telling them to send all their money to Johnny Carson c/o NBC. The crawl ended with the words "Wake up now," and it cut back to Johnny, who said, "If you went to the bathroom, welcome back; and to everyone else, thank you very much!"

This is very similar to what the BBC did in the first year they covered the FA Cup Final 22 years earlier in 1964. I should point out that before 1964 the only way you could watch or even follow the FA Cup Final was to buy a ticket and watch the game in person at Wembley Stadium. This was because the English FA feared that they would lose money from reduced gate revenues if the game was broadcast on TV & the radio & banned TV & radio stations in the UK from broadcasting the final for many years. 1964 was the very first year that the FA Cup would be broadcast on TV & the radio & people were naturally excited about this. The plan was for the BBC to do an hour long pregame show where they would preview the match (between West Ham & Preston North End), do a feature interview with a star player & the coach from each team & show the pre match ceremony which consists of some sort of musical performance. Instead what happened was that the BBC completed all of this in 45 minutes, meaning they had to fill 15 minutes of air time. Unlike many US TV stations & very similar to how PBS operates, the BBC does not air any commercials (even today) so the higher ups at the BBC simply decided to take the station off the air for 15 minutes & come back on when the game kicked off. However unlike this, viewers had no advance warning that this was happening & they flooded the BBC phone lines asking why their TV's suddenly went black. This resulted in the commentator for the game when the BBC came back on having to explain to viewers the situation & having to apologize on behalf of the station. I should point out that this only affected TV viewers as the radio broadcast filled those 15 minutes with news updates. The English FA were so upset with the BBC for doing this that they threatened to give the FA Cup Final rights to rival ITV in 1966 if the BBC pulled this stunt again the following year. The BBC hasn't done anything like this since.

This sounds so phenomenally dumb/unbelievable… from the fact that there was a debate about what sounds to play during the “silent” minute, to the implication that people wouldn’t grab a drink, use the restroom, or kiss their spouses unless the football overlords left the screen blank… it’s just so dumb. But that’s just how it was back then. I think the 80s/90s had this weird dynamic where the media reach was way bigger than previous decades thanks to the ubiquity of cable TV, but with no internet and fewer channels than now, it was so easy for dumb stuff like this to become the “talk of the town” and just get so much hype. It’s an interesting little window of American pop culture history where the media had such a huge influence, and it wasn’t fractured into very many niche subsections (and nothing was on demand… we just took what was given to us). Great video as usual. I’m constantly impressed with your topics and research, because I’m pretty sure you weren’t even alive for this stuff. Congrats on picking up the sponsor; it’s well-earned

So it turns out a postponement of the final round of the Phoenix Open caused CBS to improvise and the Super Bowl pregame show as we know it was born. Much like in January 2002, when the NFL was forced to move the postseason back a week after 9/11 and that resulted in the first time ever we had Saturday games at 4:30 and 8:15 PM ET in the divisional round because I believe CBS had college basketball programming/golf commitments that Saturday afternoon. That resulted in the famed "tuck rule" game, the last game ever played at Foxboro Stadium in the snow being the first-such prime time game as Pats owner Robert Kraft apparently requested that time slot, and the NFL has had Saturday 4:30/8:15 PM ET games ever since.

Walt. There was a video about how the modern All Day Super Bowl Pre Game was born that Jag made a while back, before the Cowboys/Broncos played in the first ever Indoor Domed SB at the New Orleans Superdome. And also in early 2002, that season's '01/'02 NFL Post season saw the first ever Super Bowl played in Feb. The league was already given serious consideration about it in that Y2K era period so that the SB would be held during the important Feb. Ratings Month period as well. After the Pats upset of the then St Louis Rams and Brady's first title, a couple of years later by Feb. 2005, the SB would be held permanently in Feb.

I also think the 62-7 demolition of Miami is one of the great wins in Jags history since it was a great Jacksonville team at their most dominant. The win over the Falcons to get them into the '96 playoffs would also be up there, with Morten Andersen missing a chip-shot FG to end the regular season.

How about the biggest jinx in Super Bowl history? In the weeks leading up to this very game, Super Bowl XX, someone at a local Boston station thought it would be a good idea to do a response to the Super Bowl Shuffle by making a video of their own that was nothing but local Boston television personalities and Pats players bragging about how the New England Patriots were going to run all over the greatest defense in pro football history called "New England, the Patriots and Me". Remember, this was not the Belichick/Brady Pats. It wasn't even the Parcells/Bledsoe Pats. It was the Raymond Berry/Tony Eason Patriots. Not only did the stunt backfire in a huge way as the Bears effortlessly slaughtered the Patriots 46-10, but the song itself was cringe even by 80s standards.

Here’s my 3 suggestions for SupervBowl Sunday: 1) Get rid of the 6 hour pregame show 2) Play the game at the team’s home stadium with the best record . ( yes, even if it’s played in Buffalo). 3) Finally , play the game on Saturday night.

and get rid of the music acts
@NewDayNY917
@NewDayNY917 Год назад
@@thatduderobo1974 not having all these are rating killers (the music acts are the equivalent of just going to game for that portion and leaving after the halftime show)…I know music acts have nothing to do w the game whatsoever, but the SB is for casuals!
@americangiant1003
@americangiant1003 Год назад
@@NewDayNY917 Not to mention in the past 15-20 years or so, the SB now attracts thousands both of fans/guests and Media i.e TV/Radio and Online Commentators, Analysts and Reporters from around the World as well. Thus trying to put that many guests in hotels with a smaller NFL market in say Green Bay, Buffalo or Cincy with only 2 weeks notice is almost impossible now. So that is the reason, the SB for as long as it is held, will always be held at a neutral site. Especially either in Tampa/Miami, Arizona, Texas and Southern Calif.(the Rams/Chargers Stadium in Inglewood)as frequent hosts. And Mr. Pier's 2nd proposal: As a compromise as long time NYC based Sports Radio Commentator Mike Frances(1/2 of the famous pair of the Mike & Mad Dog show)suggested as early as 10-20 years ago. Move the SB, to the Sunday of the President's Day Holiday Weekend. That why many in America could have the day off and cut down on the high number of DWU/DWI drunk driving accidents, usually ranks along New Years Night as the worst each year. So playing the SB on the Sunday of President's Weekend is much more realistic than playing it on Saturday. And finally while I agree Mike Pier 1000% on cutting back on the all day 8-hour plus pre game SB shows on the station showing the game that year, sadly never will happen. Hell with the way old school regular television now here in 2023 having all time record low viewership, especially on the old school big 4 i.e Fox, NBC, CBS and ABC, the SB is the only chance now every 2-3 years to attract around 80-100 American Viewers.

Kinda wish they would’ve taken it all the way. No ’50s-esque movie theater “Let’s All Go to the Lobby” style ad with wacky graphics and music, no 1 minute countdown timer and no even subtle background music to accompany it. Just 60 seconds of black screen. Silence, that is. Dead air. Texas manure.
