ECI (The Esports Certification Institute) has made a splash in the industry by inserting a paywall before one can "get a job", in a space that didn't actually require any sort of payment before. They claim "meritocracy, Diversity, and Inclusion" while contradicting themselves and crafting a gatekeeping barrier that only serves to HURT the gaming space, rather than help.
The industry does not need these people, and would be better served by their swift exit from the space. They may think that the product provides value, but more than likely this is yet another Esports scam, grift, or fraud. Whatever you want to call it.

The thing is that capitalist societies exist, function, and succeed because they produce things of value that can be traded for capital. I think these papers are essentially capitalistic cocaine. Like cocaine, they can get you a quick taste of what you want in the short term but aren't a practical long term solution and will likely leave you with less than you started with when you began. I think those who really believe in the merits of capitalism seek to profit off of things that are actually valuable to people not trick them into purchasing things that they perceive as valuable. It's a fine line to be sure but I think ultimately it's the line that separates selling a product from pushing a scam.

I think it's even more dangerous, if they could lobby and have the qualification made legally mandatory they could have the power to revoke certification and to an extent control the esports industry. Lawmakers are clueless about games and gaming and a group offering certification could weasel their way into an advisory role without too much difficulty.

Why? He's a business person. He should know damn well that jobs in esports are just like any other job but in the esports industry. Actually he's on record stating this exact fact. Want to be a player manager? Talent agent is already a thing. Want to be a team manager? Operations/logistics. Team owner? Be rich or start your own from nothing. You don't need a cert in "esports" specifically. You just need the required skills for the jobs that already exist... but haven't been widely applied to esports as an industry. (Not from outside industries) All you really need are resume writers and recruiters that focus on esports and gaming organizations, which we don't have because most organizations are run/dominated by gamers who have no experience in business itself or in running business Operations at the director level+ let along as a manager at a McDonald's or something. So you get ex-pro player who spent his high school and college years on LoL, who has no idea how to manage people or a company... running a company and managing people. Which is why, in particular, LoL teams in the US are absolutely trash internationally. And their desired solution is to just buy foreign players until basically all US teams are have zero *actual* Americans playing on them?

I've listened to your content for ages and never had a reason to comment until now, since this topic directly impacts my field of work. The questions you show on stream are only a sliver of the horrific and dumb questions on the test. A friend of mine went through the whole thing and it's so bad. It's worse than the SAT with esports flavoring. Fortunately the entire scene and more has collectively laughed and meme'd them into hopefully non-existentence so we were spared this type of insanity for a time yet. The weird thing about this is that in the old days, (a few decades ago - so old for probably most folk here), there would be this sort of scam in printed form, (including pyramid schemes and the such), but the copies of the books would be a few dollars, which would obviously include the price of actually printing and distribution, etc while still making money off the weak willed and needy. Yet this is $400 for basically blurb, website and a bit back end money laundering processing. The cost of which is peanuts compared to the latter day examples. Is there that much loose change kicking around nowadays for scammers to tap into?

This is eerily similar to Japan's gambling laws regarding professional gaming & JeSU (Japanese eSports Union). I'm not that deep into the details but through the convoluted magic that is Japanese bureaucracy, players that made gaming their profession are required to have this "Pro License" due to Japan's gambling laws if they want to earn the big buck. A fighting game player by the handle Momochi was opposed to this idea with reasons roughly similar to yours. He was severely 'punished' by the union by having his earning massively reduced from 7 digit Yens to mere 5 digit Yens. That's like going from 10000 bucks to 100. It's insane...

I think what they're trying to get at is that the current system is excluding to diverse candidates, while a true meritocracy, by very function of it's blindness towards diversity, may allow for more diverse candidates to rise to the positions deserving of their merit. I'm not trying to side with them, but I think that's what they meant.

Another anecdote: I played Phantom Covert Ops, and they felt the need to put "ThIs game was made by a diverse team" in the credits (not the exact quote). I thought the game was pretty good, but I can't stand when people feel the need to advertise that. When you're making a product, your teammate's skin color, sexual orientation, or whatever you're trying to get brownie points for is completely irrelevant. I have high-functioning autism, I don't need people to hire me out of pity just because I have a disability. Fuck these people for having the goll to be so patronizing to think they need to hire people just because they're a minority.

FYI, public benefit corporations are a specific kind of corporation. A specific class of legal entity, it's not so much a claim other than saying like "we are an LLC" or "we are a publicly traded company".

A bit like an employment agency that takes a fee from your income every month simply by submitting your resume for you to prospective employers. Back in the 80s if you wanted a job and wanted to keep all your income you'd go out and look for it and have an actual interview with the head of that business. Not today.

The *really* funny thing (and really dumb thing) is that in other fields (like, say, poetry publishing) this is 100% a valid thing and tactic. Multiple legit publishing magazines make you pay XYZ amount for being *considered* for chapbook publishing and then much more money for any printed chapbook over XYZ number of copies. I don't agree with what this ESports certification board is doing but I understand why someone thought it would be profitable and a good idea; it's literally everywhere all over the world. And I personally consider Universities to be part of this scam of paying for useless pieces of paper. Which as a History major who is now getting a graduate degree in English, I can say is 100% accurate.
