14:42 IIRC, The Dunwich Legacy was designed before Night of the Zealot, and before the rules were fully implemented, let alone finalized into a technical rulebook. It's pretty much guaranteed that dropping clues when you resign wasn't even on the designers's/playtesters's minds when making House Always Wins.

Really before? I think, the player cards were designed pretty much simultaneously. But for instance the weird design choice to not have Icy Ghoul and Flesh Eater set aside at first and shuffled into the encounter deck after advancing Act 1 seems to indicate to me, that "The Gathering" was designed very early in the process. The Victory 1 on a shroud 1 location with 1 per investigator clue and no further handicap looks more like a troll move by them, like the victory locations in Pallid Mask, that can be removed from the game, contrary to most other scenarios (including ECE, which predates this scenario), where they are put into the victory display.

That's fascinating that Dunwich Legacy was designed before Night of the Zealot! Is there an article that I could read about this?

We had an Ashcan Pete in our group that lost Duke to being sacrificed...that was a game changer for sure

I have such strong nostalgia for Dunwich. At first I thought it was just having 7 opportunities to upgrade my deck, and I still think that's part of it. I think the other big part was having more opportunities for previous choices to come back. Cheating in The House Always Wins, and then for the rest of the campaign remembering that the extra token was my own fault blew my mind.

I feel like dunwich is the 2nd part of the core set. This has to be your 2nd buy
@waltercardcollector
@waltercardcollector 2 года назад
Yeah! It even has a lot of upgrades for the cards in the core set - I think it has a lot more than other cycles too.

for the longest time the second part of the core set was the second core set :(

Thanks for this "podcast"! It's really interesting to hear all your thoughts about this topic. I think it could be interesting to have a "podcast" type of video with your thoughts about the new cycle that should be announced next week given FFG's tweets. But even if the announcement takes longer, it could be interesting because I would like to hear your thoughts about the lore/story behind these teaser tweets, given you've played other AH games and all. Where do you think the campaign story will go and even what type of design space you would like to see in the new campaign. It could be neat to have this type of "podcasts" about the story of the existing campaigns as well and what you like about them. How well do you think it works in terms of telling a story and how immersive each scenario can be.

I like this style of video and just reviewing past experiences while talking about how it compares to others now.

I just realized that Whipoorwills are Hunters. I ignored them often enough, with Dunwich being my first proper campaign, but having ignored both their presence and the fact that they're actually hunters makes me sad now lol

I think, Yog-Sothoth is no competition for Azathoth. He doesn't even appear, if you are fast enough, and can still be blown away by big guns, explosions or even playing "Who blinks first" with him on a Hypnotic Gaze, level 2. Azathoth is how I expect an Ancient One to fit the lore.

might consider adding the return to boxes to these run downs. My friends and I have been buying the reissues and return to all together, not sure if were the only ones

You can totally get all the VP locations in the House Always Wins. Either someone uses "I'm Outta Here" on a non-VP location, or you do the sacrifice play. Someone with no clues drags out Peter Clover and the other person gets themselves knocked out somewhere else and drops their clues somewhere it doesn't matter. We often plan for the I'm Outta Here play if someone has access to Rogue cards.

I would argue that a method where one half of the strategy is someone dying is not a good design.
@jacen1551
@jacen1551 2 года назад
@@PlayingBoardGames True, I didn't really consider it from a design perspective, merely by what is possible to accomplish. Sometimes we just pursue VP maximization at all costs.

Return to box also comes with a treachery, that can help to retrieve the victory. (Need for Knowledge)

These days I consider Dunwich a sort of deck building design challenge - can my team get Peter and outta here the extra clues, and can we kill all the broods. Both are very feasible but it becomes a bit more like LOTR, with specific cards for certain scenarios. Keeps it interesting…

Spoilers? eh. I'll get to them eventually. Only started playing this game seriously recently. Mainly due because i wanted decent options to play with rather than be shoehorned to play specific cards. That mythos phase. Deck destruction is harsh. I am actually glad I have Mandy on a 40 card deck. It was super hilarious my playthrough. The monster showed up first mythos phase, and my beat stick had nothing to do for pretty much the entire game until that damn thing reappeared. Both were being hammered by treachery cards. The very last turn was a super lucky break. I had just reached the room I needed to search for the necronominom (mmm delish!), the monster gets spawned into that room, Mandy was alone with 2 tokens left on the Pendant of the Queen. I'm thinking, well this is annoying as I can't search nor can I abuse this card to move to a location I am already in. I'll have to move Nathaniel closer who was 2 rooms away, then evade the monster and make it follow into the adjacent room, otherwise I wont be able to get those 4 clues in the room because the room doesn't allow it if the monster is present. So mythos phase comes up, I drawn a card for Nathaniel and bam! Move monster to him, and perform an attack. Sweet! Allowed me to use the fingerprint kit and a deduction for 3 clues, then perform just a basic investigate with magnifying glass. That was a pretty epic turn around of luck. I didn't like The House Always Wins. Progress based on pure luck is garbage.

Just finished my first ever run of this campaign! I'm curious what you guys were talking about when it comes to not getting all the victory points in The House Always Wins. I'm wondering if I cheated because I'm pretty sure I got them all. Is there something that forces you to resign before you can gather the clues from the back exit area?
@PlayingBoardGames
@PlayingBoardGames Год назад
When you resign, you drop all clues on your location. So if you resign with clues on the alleyway, you drop them on that location, losing the victory on that location if you already had gotten all the clues off of it.
@henryjones8636

@@PlayingBoardGames Oh wow. That's silly. I for sure cheated in that case.

you can get the victory if you are fast enough you need to retire through the front.
