Sisco: "Odo, you can't solve all your problems by throwing them in jail." Odo: "Have you not seen the plaque I installed in my office?" *cut to plaque* Plaque: "Every problem can be solved by throwing them in jail."
I'll never understand why criminal element was insisting on conducting their dealings on Deep Space 9 - the one place in Alpha Quadrant where walls *literally* have ears. It's like asking to get caught.
I suppose Odo's shape shifting abilities were kept well under wraps, Quark was just seen as a bar owner, and few really knew who Garak really was. Probably seemed like a backwater to most prior to the Dominion War. I imagine after the war though that some of its secrets were a little better known.
They don't know anything about Odo yet. He was possibly the only Changeling in the entire Alpha Quadrant at this point. DS9 was a decent choice because it was a Cardassian station just transferred over to the Federation who hadn't worked out all of the kinks yet and there were a lot of post-Occupation tensions, so security had more things than Klingon criminals to worry about.
@@Eisenwulf666 They have space craft and beaming tech. They can literally meet anywhere..........even in open space lol. They don't have to sneak around on a space station drawing attention. Heck they can just send an encrypted message from their home world. THey don't even have to travel most of the time other than to actually pick up real items and cargo.
I always thought it odd that Sisko didn't even bother to inform the Klingon High Council of known renegades on his station. Then again, perhaps he didn't want them sending a battle fleet to his doorstep.
@@Wearyman I always thought why Odo doesn't get angry with Sisko that he doesn't let him do his job and reminds Sisko that he's not in Starfleet and doesn't take orders from him. And everyone knows that Starfleet has been ordering Sisko to replace Odo and Kira since day one.
Garak is already in full clandestine intelligence mode in episode 3, even with a simple chat, asking Bashir to enhance his evening, emphasizing and slowing his speech on the word enhance, because Garak already knew what would take 5 seasons for everyone else to learn about Bashir’s genetic enhancements. The DS9 writing is just incredible.
You make it seem like anyone knew it ahead of time. The actor who played bashir was not happy with the surprise reveal his character was genetically enchanted, he found out when he read the script and was not happy about it because he would have played the character different
@@willtofish What does it matter? When someone writes a book, for example, they may decide the ending differently than their original outline called for when a creative idea is sparked by the turns storytelling often takes on its own, surprising even the writer. I’ll say it again, the DS9 writing is just incredible.
Odo was correct however. If they are under warrant for arrest by the High Council you would think that they would have an extradition treaty with the Federation... and that their warrants could be enforced there as well. Guess not.
1:45 - 1:55 SIsko: "Odo! They haven't broken any laws here. You can't just thrown them in jail!!" Odo: "You know Cardassian rule may have been oppressive but at least they were simple!" Sisko: "Indeed they were! So simple that millions of Bajorans lost their lives because the Cardassians took the liberty to incarcerate, murder, and subject them to harsh medical experiments!!"
@@nick0875 those humans were not harmed when he fired those biogenic weapons. The only thing that was worse to them was they became refugees at least they went back to the federation home territories
@@nick0875 There are a *lot* of room between "uninhabitable by" and "death in 10 seconds without gear". Technically both arctics are uninhabitable to humans. We can still survive there, but need a lot of imports to do even that much.
I agree with Odo on this one. If they are wanted by your allies, then they should be arrested. You would expect the same if there was a Federation terrorist that was found out by Klingons. You would be not be happy with your ally finding out they had that person and let them go.
Again you forget just because the federation signed a treaty with the Klingons what makes you think they put an extraordinary terms in there? Do you really think the federation will be that stupid the extra date somebody from the federation back to Kronos Knowing damn well that they will be executed and the federation is very anti death penalty?
@@attiepollard7847 Turning them over to the Klingons would have made good sense politically. Klingons would not have forgotten that the Federation helped them capture two wanted women and would have likely reciprocated in the future. That being said, from the Federation's perspective they were wanted for just being on the losing side of a civil war and getting involved like that would have violated the prime directive.
@@the_synack you do know the federation does not have the death penalty so it will go against your values to extradite them back to them to face death. You might as well let go and catch them on another crime if they commit one next time
What a truly amazing first episode to kick off a show following the pilot. Can you please upload some more clips from this episode, such as in Garaks shop and also the runabouts?
Sisko was so in the wrong, Odo had every legitimate reason to detain them. They were fugitives from justice from an allied state that has previously extradited prisoners to and from.
I love the part in generations when the enterprise fires at at them the full spread of photon torpedo, they're watching it come just as it hits them remember I said bye-bye time to fry...😏
What Kingon goes around with only one weapon?? At the very least they would have a D'k tahg or a Mek'leth or maybe an Mevak. (Yes I ck'ed Google for 2 of those names) Odo should have known to ck them (and everyone) for more weapons.
@@ianmoseley9910 exactly. I doubt Odo actually believed that they had completely disarmed. He would've been more suspicious had the sisters just turned over the pistols without argument. The sisters knew that just boarding the station would cause a commotion so they played into it. I had originally assumed they were making the scene as a distraction but maybe they were just trying to draw out the head of security to size them up, and know what they looked like.
Well much like some American towns during the 19th century, there was a policy of checking your guns at the sheriff's while you were in town. The sheriff knew that some still had concealed firearms, but the goal wasn't to get every weapon it was just to get most of the visible ones to reduce the number of deadly altercations. Also if someone does use a concealed weapon you have them on a charge for the concealed weapon even if the use of it was justifiable self-defense, so maybe it reduced the chance of someone going for their gun in a fist fight or confrontation unless their life really was in jeopardy.
Huh... I guess muzzle dicipline doesn't exist in the future. I mean, holding the disruptors by the shooty-end while your deputy grabs the trigger-end is a good way to give your molecular bonds the day off.
Throwing them to the klingon high council would not work I think. If I were them, I would have prepared for that, by arranging a rescue team if I wasn't back in time. Execution could work, but even Odo wouldn't do that to them. Also, their deaths might not stop their allies from continuing. You need to dismantle their entire network. Preferably by humiliation of the leaders.
Not to mention that Gowron would find it honorable upon the Federation and owe a particular favor to Sisko which could've been cashed in at a later point, saving a lot of lives.
To be honest, neither one of the Duras sisters was very attractive. But the Klingon girl (N'Garen) from the DS9 episode "Sons and Daughters" was cute as a button. 😁
@@jacksonheathen2092We all have different tastes. IMO, She looked really good on TNG when she showed her cleavage. Lursa always seemed too manly to me, just for my tastes.
Sisko could have turned in the Duras sisters and used that as a card later during the Klingon-Cardassian conflict when the station was attacked: Gowron: Captain Sisko! You will give up the Cardassian council members or we will take them by force! Sisko: Excuse me? Remember when I rid you of the Duras sisters by handing them over to you and you executed them?
I'm surprised that Odo didn't get cross with Sisko because he's not letting him do his job. Plus Odo isn't in Starfleet. Starfleet has been ordering Sisko to replace Odo and Kira since day one.
He is still subordinate to Sisko on the station plus Bajor has even LESS reason to arrest the Duras sisters than the Federation does so not sure how this would work out. Throwing them in the brig and handing them over to the Klingons might be what they deserve, but it sets a terrible precedent for current and future visitors to the station if they think they'll be hauled off to face charges committed elsewhere, and would probably lead to demands for Odo and Sisko to be removed both within the Federation and without.
That might lead to the Klingons doing something rather rash, like sending a ship to arrest them leading to a firefight on the station, and probably a serious reprimand from Sisko (and maybe even a loss of his job) for going behind his back like that and causing an incident.
Would have to notify the right person in the empire though. There were Duras family sympathizers and if they got the message, it would likely be a fake custody situation where they would pretend to take the sisters in but in reality would be setting them free.
Details, details...lol. That is something that is always annoying in sci-fi or superhero flicks with shapeshifters. In fantasy you can explain it away with magic, but it is just plain silly in anything trying to act like it is science based.
According to Memory-Alpha, It has been suggested that Changelings utilize subspace to store matter when they change, as well as obtain the energy required for their survival.
