Glen was picking on Don Felder way before this. But what bothers me is him saying he had been paying Don for 7 years. Now that was beyond arrogant. Don Felder brought to the Eagles exactly what they needed. A harder sound. He was a brilliant guitarist and a productive one too. He earned his ownership and then some. Now to treat him as a hired musician is really bad. It continued after the reunion too. Just sad really.
When we saw them in Vancouver/96, there were already reports of the grumblings. Glad I saw them when we did. I will never watch any of their others without Felder, and that includes videos.
I don't disagree, but he was a b*tch about everything else. Bottom line: If the terms of the arrangement were good enough for Joe Walsh, who was considered a guitar GOD forever by that time, the terms should have been good enough for Felder. Felder could play, no doubt, but Joe Walsh was at least as good and with a better musical legacy. I respect how Joe Walsh has always been able to steer clear of condemning statements for this event.
@@ScooterOnHisWay2024 Felder is not an employee of eagles, he's one third owner of eagle, if Don and Glen is doing something on the book then he has to do something about it, unlike Joe and Timothy which is only an employee.
The problem I had with Frey's comment about him paying Felder for all those years is that, although that may have been true in the early years after laying the groundwork, it was Felder who came up with Hotel California which vaulted the group into immortality. You can't put a price tag on that.
id been content with just playing guitar in that band. felders out making an ass out of himself now. trying to sing and he is no singer. he wrote his little poor me book, he made millions.
I love his work in Victim of Love. Simply amazing. Oh, who am I trying to kid. I love all his work! It's almost comical hearing someone else trying to play his parts. Just knowing the notes isn't quite enough.
No one wants to be around someone who politicizes everything. There’s a guy who works at the corner store and you cant even say hello to him without getting a lecture about the govt. All things being equal, id rather be around someone who doesn’t utter a word about politics. If anything, ppl care too much about politics and what makes it worse is they arent really talking politics as they are just spewing off liberal/conservative nonsense they heard on CNN or bc they saw some goofy pic of Jesus and Satan arm wrestling
It wasn't the politics that led to the issue. Felder actually agreed with Senator Cranston's politics. He just didn't want to play for free. And even that wasn't the true reason for the bitterness. Had been brewing for years.

Don Felder's guitar riff on 'Already Gone' back in '74 (DKRC) was one of the best I've ever heard in rock 'n' roll. The man could handle that guitar as if it were a part of him.
I remember at the end of an Eagles concert, exiting the stadium thinking how great a guitarist is Don Felder, what tone, the parts he plays -- one of the all time greatest guitarists i ever saw live -- it was a great great concert, over 3 hours long, best sounding band i ever saw live - i was beyond impressed by Felder's playing.
I recall these 2 dudes trying to learn Hotel California in high school. Walked by em every day. Never laughed or put em down. Just thot to myself: that's Felder's.. good luck!
🤔 Joe Walsh and Don Felder were by far the coolest members of that band! They were the polar opposites of their 2 smug, arrogant, condescending egomaniacal band mates. Besides, Felder did a song for the Heavy Metal movie, which was cooler than any of Frey's solo pop stuff.

What Joe is talking about is a very different kind of problem . Joe had Substance problems but was mainly only hurting himself but with Felder and Glen it was a deep resentment on the verge of violence onstage during a performance When Joe said you got problems he was talking about the whole band not just Felder vand Glen
Don Felder came up with Hotel California and when Henley heard it he says it should be done differently than the vision Felder had for it. Felder was willing to give Don’s way a try and says, You know what? Don (Henley) was right. Humble. That’s Don Felder.

You might be thinking of the "hell freezes over" acoustic version when they first got back together in '94. Felder "reworked" the solo there. I think I've seen a similarly worded quote from Henley back then.

Yes it shows as mad as he was he still was thinking and has his wits. If he was mad enough to smash one of his coveted, hard to replace guitars it probably would have been over Frey's head !!!!
Don Felder was a crucial, imperative and very important part of The Eagles, especially around the time of one of their most successful records, "Hotel California," (which by the way, he co-wrote) but Frey and Henley constantly treated him like he was just a hired hand, and nothing more. If anything, I give Felder credit for putting up with that sort of BS, for as long as he did, and for not smashing his guitar into Frey's head!
I can see the points Felder makes and I'd probably do the same. But also how Frey and Henley are the 2 one "owner" of the band and decide what's best for the eagles. If that makes sense

I think Tim said it best, to paraphrase, "Every Rock and Roll band is always on the verge of breaking up." Hell, I admire them for keeping it together as well as they did. Don't forget, they broke up for 14 years, came back and kicked ass, every lineup they had was good.

Alan Cranston was busted as part of the Keating Five, remember millions of Americans lost everything in the savings and loan scandal? Cranston banked. "I've paid you for seven years...", yeah, well there'd be no Hotel California, your signature song, without Felder.
Well, except Cranston didn't get involved in the Keating/Lincoln scandal until 5 years AFTER this Eagles breakup. As of 1980 he was still a "respectable politician".
Glen Frey's voice is what I first loved about the Eagles. To see him throw away a band member over a Politician is just nuts. Politician worship - bad. How many great songs after Don Felder?

I cannot help seeing Randy's angelic face among these guys. Never ever get me wrong. Randy said all he wanted to see was 5 guys working together, together he meant as a team, being humble towards each other. Randy was never that confrontational. Now i know why he was unhappy seeing their respective dominance that time. But they did it still, leaving and having fame on their own. The Eagles will always be a part of our lives. I was just very happy during the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when Tim really thanked Randy!✌❤ Love you all guys, incredibly genius musicians and performers🎉!
@@fenderbassfan i get the feeling that was just the “straw that broke the camels back”. there seemed to be a frustration built up against felder. he joined the band that was established already, coming in and wanting this and that, knowing the band had established leaders. every band has a leader(s). otherwise nothing would get done. regardless of how good felder was in the band, if was better than anyone else(subjective, to ones taste) the band had its leaders
Felder changed the band and everyone became more famous and suffered at the same time. Felder was a class act and they needed each other. He and Joe Walsh changed what could have turned out to be an average band.
No, I love Walsh and Felder as musicians, but the first two Eagles albums are the only ones I love. After that, they turned from authentic country-rock into more mainstream pop-rock with some country overtones (IMO).
@@carlgustav945 That they have the #1 selling album of all time says more about the consuming public than the talent of the band. And the decadence of the time they flourished. Take a close listen to most of their songs and notice how much they wail and whine about the cultural bankruptcy of the era. And how Henley in particular acts with each album more and more like he's above it all.

Glen was a problem child, and with Felder being an incredible guitarist surely created quite the ultra green envy-complex for Glen. He's seething in the video - even after many years.
That struck me also. They weren’t doing Felder any favors. He was there because of his incredible talent. And the anger in Frey’s eyes after so many years is a little scary.
That wasn’t just a politician, that was Alan Cranston the kind of political leaders this country should have. Senator Cranston was a special man he didn’t deserve that kind of disrespect.
Freys attitude is revealed in the on stage bickering when he sez that, he's been paying him for seven years. no glen, you were paid as a unit and you weren't the paymaster. and if paid on merit I would say don should have been paid more than you up till then.
Don Felder co-wrote the biggest song of their career. Not only that but, his musical idea was the inspiration and catalyst for the concept beind the most successful album of their career. Glenn Frey should have been thanking Felder not spouting off to him.
I agree with you, T. Joseph Yoakum. All politicians do is win popularity contests and generate paperwork. They never really produce anything of any value. Some do, but that is rare.
@@stephenstone8480all joe had on felder was that he was animated when playing, but from what I read don felder technically was the better player. But for me I do agree, I count all that when deciding best guitar players so Joe was better.
Maybe Felder could have been a little more gracious, but on a rudeness scale what he said was pretty mild, and hardly warranted Frey's vicious (over)reaction.
Don Felder played at a casino I worked at about 12 years ago. After the show and the auditorium was empty, he was around talking with people. I approached him and asked him to sign my left handed Gibson. He graciously did without hesitating. That was mt prized possession until, due to our current situation, I had to sell it to make ends meet. I cried that night. Someday, I will find her and but her back..... I didn't want to sell it Mr. Felder, I am sorry.

I used to work with a guy with the last name Felder and would joke with him, saying things like "oh, like Don Felder, right?" Then one day he said he kept this quiet, but Don was his first cousin. I knew immediately he wasn't joking and as it turns out is a pretty good guitar player as well. Ya never know!
Ever notice how Frey always tries to come across as the good guy in every confict and yet his own telling usually betrays the truth that he was just a petty jackass....IMO
If they both had arthiritus, hitting each other would have been the last thing they would have wanted! It hurts to much and yelling at first would be better and then making up later and writing a song about anger would have been better? I liked the Eagles a lot!
By Felder's own admission he didn't know who Cranston was. So he wasn't being rude to a Senator, he was being rude to a fan. People need to stop boosting Felder because he didn't care that Cranston was a senator because he DIDN'T KNOW he was a Senator. He was just being rude to someone had shaken his hand and thanked him.
It is never smooth sailing when everyone in the band is a powerhouse of talent. This wasn't Wings where you have Paul and everyone else. This was the Eagles.

It's Glen Frey's behavior that I stopped being an Eagles fan. Their music is great but their greatest album is because of Felder and he treated him like a hired hand.
According to Felder and sources, he was a major contributor to the Hotel California’s whole structure (period) and I believe that as a huge fan of the entire band. And to see him depart from the group is tragic. He is to me The George Harrison of Eagles. Pretty much says it all.
That great bands exist at all is a miracle. Being a top notch musician requires a near fatal dose of OCD - which also makes it extremely hard to get along with others.
good point, in videos where you see henley he is absolutely ocd about the music and arrangements, i guess that is one of the reasons why they are so good.
Just finished it. Yeah, its actually amazing. I simply can't figure out all the strange coincidences that his life ran into. Most people never MEET someone famous or super rich in their life. Felder seemed to be connected to people LONG before they would go ON to be famous. Bernie Leadon just stumbles into his life one day? He just happens to play in a band with Stephen Stills? He just happens to teach TOM PETTY how to play guitar? That book was off the charts. Talk about being born with a heavenly horseshoe up your ass. I was bummed about all the drugs and fornication, cheating on his wife...and that letter she got from one of his "fans". Talk about a marriage killer!!
How is Felder the "ungrateful" one? He was doing Cranston a favor. Or more accurately, Felder was forced into doing Cranston a favor at Frey's and Henley's behest.

Saw the Eagles live twice and loved them, although I don't know much about their history. Glen was my favorite, purely because of his vocals. I wasn't political in those days. Nobody was. The country has changed.
Frey and Henley have always been pretentious POS's ....the only reason they got rid of Felder is that now , they'd only have each other to deal with ...PS some of the best Eagles tunes ever written had little to do with those two ...can you say Jackson Browne ? JD Souther ? .. Don Felder ?...Bernie Leaden ? Randy Meisner?
