I've been a Protestant for nearly 35 years - was a reformed elder in a Baptist Church for two of those years - and of late in the Anglican Church. This podcast, and discussions like this, are helping me (slowly, but no doubt surely), look at Catholicism in a totally different light. Thank you. Please pray for me!!

I was at a Protestant church service the other day, and they had communion. The pastor literally said "Jesus took the bread and said 'this is a symbol of my body' and he took the wine and said 'this is a symbol of my blood.'" Literal misquote of Scripture. He had scripture on a TV screen for every passage he quoted except for the most important one. It really made my blood boil.

Well, on the other hand, the pastor really is not anointed to represent Jesus and do a consecration. Hence, they can only present symbols to their followers.

We have 8 kids, late parents... had last kid at 46... tough, but I treasure all the moments , realizing they'll leave for college at 18 makes me treasure all the moments with them. We pray before every meal, go to daily Mass as often possible, prayed before every meal & every time we get in the car...& no, & they go to Catholic schools & can read & sing in Latin, but we are not perfect catholics; many struggles with electronics et al, but love the moments of sharing before night prayers... many times the kids world share longer than prayer time & it's beautiful...& there are times, "pray quickly please I have a test to study for!"

Maria Faustyna Kowalska, OLM, also known as Maria Faustyna Kowalska of the Blessed Sacrament, was a Polish Catholic religious sister and mystic. Wikipedia Born: August 25, 1905, Głogowiec, Poland Died: October 5, 1938, Kraków, Poland Buried: October 7, 1938, The Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy, Kraków, Poland ---Mystic??? Did she delve in mythology? Tarot cards? >>> Who did Sister Faustina see in Purgatory? They Saw Purgatory | The Divine Mercy One night, Sr. Faustina was visited by the soul of a fellow religious sister who had recently passed away. In her Diary, she described the poor soul as being "in a terrible condition ... with her face painfully distorted." In response, Sr. Faustina redoubled her prayers for the sister's soul. --Odd!! Did St. Faustina burn her diary? There is no chronological order to the Diary. That is because Sr. Faustina burned all the initial notebooks of her Diary when Fr. Sopoćko went away to the Holy Land for a few weeks in 1934. -Why not read what the Bible says about the dead??????? ***Hell, heaven or purgatory? --Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: --Psalm 115:17 The dead praise not the Lord, neither any that go down into silence. --Ecclesiastes 9:10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest. ---Job 14:10-12 But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he? 11 As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up: 12 So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep. ---Ecclesiastes 9:5-6 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. 6 Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun. ---Genesis 3:19---In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. --Psalm 146:4----His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish. --Ecclesiastes 12:7--Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. ---James 2:26--For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. ---Ecclesiastes 9:6--Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun. --John 3:13--And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. ---Psalm 6:5--For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give thee thanks? ---Ecclesiastes 9:5-For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. AND NOT ONE ever mentions a place called "purgatory!!! The most prominent modern historian of the idea of Purgatory, Jacques Le Goff, dates the term purgatorium to around 1170; and in 1215 the Church began to set out the actual length of time in Purgatory required of souls. --So, where did catholoics get the place called "purgatory when IT IS NOT mentioned in the Bible!! I can tell you. The CC needed more money for their coffers. What better way to get more money by Inventing a place called "purgatory". A state of "limbo". People will give their last cent to get their loved ones out of such a place. The problem is that there is NO SUCH place in the Bible!!! ---If "purgatoy' is in the Bible, why did it take the CC over 1000 years to invent it??? ----And, why is it that the CC can tell how long a person stays there??? If it was biblical, that decision would have been up to GOD to judge them!!! NO ONE is judged until the Day of Judgement!!!-- What does the Bible say about Judgment Day? Jesus separates the sheep on his right; the goats on his left (Matthew 25:32, 33). There is but one judgment day (Revelation 11:18). Both the saved and lost will be judged (Romans 14:10 and 2 Corinthians 5:10). Our works both good and bad will be judged (Ecclesiastes 12:14, 2 Corinthians 5:10). ---What God says about Judgement? Bible Gateway Matthew 7 :: NIV. "Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. "Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? But, obviously the CC does judge those in purgatory!!!

2:08:57.... My Grandfather was that person. The one I had the most strained relationship with... he didn't know how to use words to make up for lost time. Neither did i... But, God gave me, in his dying days, the opportunity to be the one sitting with him for blood transfusions, oncology appointments, spinal taps, thr hospice planning.. I got to see my grandfather humbled, and weak. A man I knew to be arrogant and strong. Strongest man I ever knew. Lacking in emotion and empathy... And when all other family *almost* failed us in those days... I gave to him everything I could. I missed and gave up all that I enjoy, to spend every last waking moment I could in his company. A shame that it wasn't until this time, I eas about 29/30, when for a first time in my life that I can recall he said "I love you." ... He was a drunk, and had been and could be quite abusive... But he was also very protective, very loving though without words or touch. And I came to understand he was merely a product of his raising and lived experiences. Abd I had to understand the times and situations he lived through... I never got to tell him I forgave him for what was done, or said between us to drive that wedge... I will never know if he knew I Loved him, or that he was the only father I ever knew... But, that forgiveness, often i find, is far more about our own soul not withering abd rotting inside us, than about those whom dis us wrong... But, if that answers, yes... the sincere times we had in his last days... Was more than enough to show me the man I knew God had meant to be seen... I recall in the days after his passing, praying for my punish to in redemption of his eternal soul... to be honest I'm terrified Gos may carry that through... But I made the prayer in sincerity, that he be forgiven for all...

Similar to Joe’s sister, my youngest daughter suddenly left at 15 yrs old and we don’t understand why. She has rare contact with one of her brothers but doesn’t want us to know her address or phone #. The most confusing part for me is that she loves God, and would even pray before the tabernacle in college (apparently). Please pray for my precious daughter, Faith. I've thought something very similar when I'm trying to get a kid to sleep and it's taking longer than I'd like. I think: one day I'm going to remember these moments and cherish them. And that helps me cherish that present moment. Easier to do when you have multiple kids and some have grown too old for you to rock them to sleep but not your youngest.

The time machine idea reminds me of the movie About Time. I can’t remember the details, but the men of the family have the ability to travel back in time and the main character’s father gives him the advice to live each day twice, so the 2nd time through he can appreciate everything he missed the first time, when he was annoyed or stressed, etc. I loved that idea when I first saw the movie and my son was young, but I’d forgotten about it, so thank you for reminding me.

Jesus didn't found the Catholic church as it is now. Jesus never taught purgatory, or prayers to dead saints, or any number of current Catholic dogmas. Claiming that Jesus founded the Catholic church is fundamentally dishonest.
@zacharynelson5731
@zacharynelson5731 2 года назад
@@SneakyEmu Jesus also never taught the trinity or the incarnation of hypostatic Union. He also never mentioned that revelation would end with the death of the last apostle, and never mentioned which books belong in the Bible. Oh but that’s right; Jesus never taught that something has to be explicitly written in scripture in order to be true, and it’s incredibly dishonest to go by that standard.
@SneakyEmu
@SneakyEmu 2 года назад
@@zacharynelson5731 then you agree that Jesus didn't found the Catholic church! Especially if by "the Catholic church" you mean something that has been in a constant state of change for the last 2000 years and will remain in a state of change for as long as it exists because it still believes that it's leader can speak with infallibility. 2:23:33 Good point on different style of talking. I experienced this during Virtual Catholic Apologhetic Conference, where I had an opportunity to listen to many great people I hadn't known before. However some of them (old or young, I didn't exactly see correlation with age) spoke in this very theatrical, emotional style - and my main reaction was "I don't buy it, this sounds very fake, like if he/she tried to convince me emotionally instead of reasoning", so very negative. I was discouraged even though I wasn't against their statements and really wanted to find valuable strong arguments in their presentations. Maybe my reaction was even stronger because I have some background in marketing, psychology and know a bit about manipulation. I appreciate the way you (Matt, Joe), Jimmy, Trent, Chris or even Mr. Peter Kreeft speak, as I feel it's more about the content, the information and reasoning - and I feel I'm treated like an intelligent person :)

It's no more about pope or council anymore than it is about the Bible or Tradition. Just like with the hypostatic union of Christ and most other Christian teachings, it's a matter of both/and rather than either/or. It's about the pope and church councils working together with Scripture and Tradition to preserve unity and orthodoxy. The "sola scriptura" faction at the (proto-)Council of Jerusalem was the "party of the Pharisees" who insisted on the authority of only the Torah to determine faith and morals; but the ruling of the council was that it was the Spirit and the church (not the Torah alone!) that had ruling authority (see Acts 15). At Nicaea in 325, the "sola scriptura" party was the Arian. They insisted that the word "consubstantial" wasn't in the Bible and also cherry picked the gospels for "proof texts" (e.g., the Father is greater than Jesus). But the pope's delegation headed by the orthodox St. Athanasius of Alexandria insisted that the entirety of the Tradition (including all Scripture and not just a few isolated texts) establish the unity of the Father and the Son and the Son's full deity and humanity.

I finished reading Joe Heschmeyer's book 'Pope Peter' a couple days ago and it was great! I reckon if protestants read that book and were being honest with themselves, they would abandon Protestantism.

Yes, even Jimmy Akins book on The Early Church Fathers is enlightening, and has strengthened my faith as a cradle Catholic. I know with complete certainty I could never leave our church (no matter what may be happening in it) because Jesus says the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

A few months ago when I started investigating Catholicism, I stumbled across a video by Father Mike Schmitz that took a similar approach to the whole past/future thing. The whole idea was to surrender not just your present self to God, but to also give him your past and future. People often lie awake at night in bed, replaying embarrassing or traumatic events from their past, just brooding over these moments. Or we'll give ourselves anxiety worrying about the future and all the things that could go wrong. But there's nothing we can do about that stuff. What's in the past is over and done, and we can't predict the future either. You can avoid a lot of stress by simply saying "Lord, I don't want to dwell on these moments, you can have them." 1:41:47 ha, I'm playing Civilization V right now. It's the perfect game to play while watching a podcast on my other monitor. Never could get into Command and Conquer, though. My brain just can't handle all the rapid multitasking that RTS games require.

Dynamite points about wokeism and the attraction. Reminds me of the quote “the single greatest cause of atheism in the world is Christians.” They acknowledge God in their words but don’t acknowledge him in their lifestyle. We need to resist lukewarm-ness with everything we have and strive for perfection as Christ calls us to.

I watched this entire interview, and you were both very lovely, but I was waiting and waiting for the discussion at length about “the early Church was Catholic.“ As the title of the video suggests. There was a few minutes of it early on, and then the rest of the talk was just you two chatting about things you like. At one point Matt, you say “I’m trying to keep you away from anything theological“ in the discussion…Why?

It strongly seems, looking at the Scripture as a whole, that the original apostles and evangelists were very protective of the Faith. So it doesn't seem plausible that their immediate disciples went and corrupted everything within a generation.

Especially if they died agonizing Martyrs Deaths afterwards. Its the same argument we make for the resurrection of Jesus and the Apostles Testimony. It doesnt make sense to question the honesty of someone who got brutally murdered for defending this belief

Fun to "hang out" with these guys..... Dissidence in Church---It is good to acknowledge problems in Church honestly. (I do appreciate the various male(and female) lay voices....We need to stay unified and respect other's opinions....while graciously agreeing to disagree but pray for them. Everyone is bringing different things. Tim and Steph Gordon are bringing the idea that women need to stay home. These guys remind the Traditionalist to mellow out a bit....but tend to reject the full traditional role of women....I think women reclaiming their true role at home will slowly be more embraced). Fun--- I Do appreciate the reminder to be honest. It is good to discuss how to enjoy life more fully in a Catholic manner---Chess...games....and great movies. Enjoying life is a necessary thing...even Mary said this....
