In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by Catholic Answers apologist extraordinaire Joe Heschmeyer from @shamelesspopery to talk about Jesus and the Eucharist.
Together we unpack the history of the Eucharist from the Early Church to today, what we mean by "real presence" and how the very first Christians understood this, the Eucharist in light of the Old and New Covenants and much, much more. It's a banger of an episode, filled with all of the best Eucharistic apologetics like you'd expect from a guest as high calibre as my friend Joe Heschmeyer.
I hope you enjoy!

Pray and fast, brother. Try to earnestly understand why faithful Catholic's see Jesus in the Eucharist as the source and summit of the Christian faith. Then, allow yourself to long for communion with Christ.

Excellent discussion. I left the methodist church at 18, and didnt return to belief until 10 years later. I became a calvinist at that point and none of the other calvinists i knew believed in real presence. I couldnt get around john 6.... i feel like if christ is truly present in the eucharist. There's nothing more he couldve said to convince people that its really his body and blood. Seriously what more could he have said to convince people? The disciples that walked away gave him a chance to explain the metaphor but he reiterated that is no metaphor. Many of them walk away from him, if he was using a metaphor, wouldnt this be jesus just tricking people into walking away from him? I never could get around that.... it wasnt until a couple months ago, after i was confirmed in the catholic church that i found out john calvin also believed in real presence. Though he admitted total ignorance on how it is possible.

Well, John Calvin could not understand, nor can we. This is one of the very few things that we must believe by Faith in Our Lord: He said "this is My body", thus it must be. As is said on the mass, misterium fidei.

Exo 15:2 The LORD is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation: he is my God, and I will prepare him an habitation; my father's God, and I will exalt him. Luk 2:30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, Luk 2:31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; Luk 2:32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. Luk 2:33 And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him. It’s really this simple: Jesus died once for all on the cross, and the Eucharist is the literal partaking of consuming Christ’s body and blood (bread and wine).

if the eucharist is really Jesus, it is done millions of times, and rejects the fact that Christ's death on the cross was sufficient alone for salvation.
@jmisssjb05
@jmisssjb05 5 месяцев назад
That’s an awful misconception of the Eucharist. Fist century Jews (the MAIN intended audience Christ was working with) did not view the Passover as just some dinner party that had to be done yearly. It was a participation in the very same Passover Moses first helped institute, so that death could pass them over. It was necessary to participate in that event, to make that first Passover present and real and every year. It is ludicrous to think that it was done as a reminder, or for the event to carry such importance if it was only a reminder. It was a very real event that made present that very sacrifice that Moses helped institute. Death is definitely passing them again and again. Just as the Passover is a very real event, so too is the Eucharist. We re-present the EXACT same sacrifice that Christ made for us at the last supper and at his death at Golgotha, and made real and satisfactory upon his resurrection. You have a terrible misconception that simply dying in the cross was it. It wasn’t. Simply dying on the cross is an execution, the martyrdom of a “man.” No, Christ ALSO rose from the dead. But going back a little once more, ALL sacrifices were necessarily performed in Jerusalem, at the temple. But Christ did have the last supper in Jerusalem. The sacrifice of the Lamb didn’t simply happen on Calvary. Otherwise that would have been an execution. No, the sacrifice of The Lamb was started at the Last Supper. And per the Passover, the sacrificed lamb MUST BE CONSUMED, not looked at. If we are to call Jesus, The Lamb of God, he MUST BE CONSUMED. The Eucharist isn’t just a reminder of what Christ instituted at the Last Supper, but a very real event we remember by PARTICIPATING in it at every mass. Through the power of the Holy Spirit the words of invocation the priest says at mass makes the events of The Last Supper ever present and real right then and there. The only “difference” is we have a means to have new people participate, new bread and wine to offer to become the accidents for the Body and Blood of Christ Jesus. The Eucharist is Heaven on Earth. Christ knows we are fallible creatures. And as such He knew we needed to repent over and over and over again. He also knew we would need to receive Him over and over again because we are beings drawn to sin. If you still don’t accept what Christ instituted in the Eucharist, then I suppose we disagree. But please correct the error of your misconception about the Eucharist. We know Christ’s sacrifice was once for all time, sufficient for us all, because we participate in that same moment. If you still don’t accept that truth, at least you know the Catholic Church, who put together the Bible you love, believes the Scriptures to be true.

Joh_5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. Luk_4:4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. Luk 22:19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. Psa 111:4 He hath made his wonderful works to be remembered: the LORD is gracious and full of compassion. Mat 13:24 Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field: Mat 13:25 But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. Mat 13:26 But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. Mat 13:27 So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? Mat 13:28 He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? Mat 13:29 But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. Mat 13:30 Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn. Mat 13:37 He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man; Mat 13:38 The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; Mat 13:39 The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. Mat 13:40 As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. Mat 13:41 The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; Mat 13:42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Mat 13:43 Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. Mat 24:23 Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. Mat 24:24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Mat 24:25 Behold, I have told you before. Mat 24:26 Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it n

Jer_17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? Mat_13:19 When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. Luk 8:12 Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. 2Co 4:2 But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God. 2Co 4:3 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: Rom_10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. 2Th_2:10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 1Pe_4:18 And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?

So the eucharist is really Jesus? Ok, so that means that Jesus and Peter are lying? Peter says, "when the chief Shepherd SHALL appear." And when he says that Jesus will "come as a thief in the night." So Peter is lying and not speaking excathedra? How about when Jesus said "if I go to prepare a place for you I WILL COME AGAIN." Or how about Paul. When he too says that his coming will be as "a thief in the night." So arguably two of the greatest apostles and Jesus are lying because the church says Jesus is here everyday? One last question. Why is the next coming of Jesus commonly referred to as the "Second Coming?" The eucharist is nothing but a hoax and a lie from the pit of hell. It is another way of the church telling it followers that they have to believe in the real presence or they are damned to hell. That is why Trent pronounces over 100 such anathemas. This is is the only way that the church can make people believe satan's lies. Truth is that it has always been about fear, intimidation and control for the church since the beginning.
