Now, I hear a lot from people who falsely believe that living in Thailand is difficult OR that they have to horde extraordinary sums of money in order to do it...
Moving to Thailand is not a difficult as everybody tries to make out.
The advice that I’m giving you in this video is not for everyone, of course, every individual has different circumstances and different requirements in life.
My goal is NOT to encourage you to be irresponsible, but rather, to point out that there are two extremes to this argument and on top of that there's an army of people out there who DON'T want you to succeed and who HATE that you have the courage that THEY lack.
If you are planning on moving to Thailand then you should have some savings in the bank.
You should have enough to get you home.
And you should have enough to pay for medical insurance, etc.
But…
You don’t have to wait until you are as minted as Warren Buffet BEFORE you move to a country where the cost of living is a THIRD of the country that you ALREADY live in.

What visa are you getting? I know the STV visa is 9 months but you are required to leave. I truly want to live in thailand for at least a few years but there are no visas that last that long and don't have strict requirements. I'd like to move around but having an education visa requires you to go to class in one city.

Excellent advice. I kept myself from moving there in 2007 cause kids back home. Later remarried someone who holding back my freedom...we all have choices even with covid, rest is just excuses. Point is its possible if you really want it. Like me, just have to do it. CHANGE is scarry yes. Work from home? That can be anywhere. Lower cost to live allows to save for travel and retire earlier. Thanks for video, cheers!

I'm 24, Scottish, I speak Thai fluently, have a Thai fiance and we travelled around Thailand around 4 months ago, but I can see why it's hard to move to Thailand. It's so money orientated, Thailand wants your money but they don't want you is what I take from their visas and restrictions on foreigners buying property.

Good to see you back Brett! I think you're absolutely right. Some people want to bubblewrap themselves and try to think of every possible disaster that could befall them (thought the 3 motorbikes at once never crossed my mind! 🤣). But the end result of all that over thinking is paralysis; they end up doing nothing. I moved here July 2019, and I've not looked back. I sold or donated all my stuff and came here with three suitcases and a backpack at 57 yo. Divorce was my motivator for the changer of pace. I read a couple of comments about visas, and it might be good for you to revisit that issue some time. It is a pretty fluid situation on that front here in Thailand. I'm on a retirement visa, and so far so good. Cheers!

My car is paid for and l have a 1 bedroom apartment, thats not in the slums. Don't eat out much and l have a few women who spend a little time with me every month. I barely drink any alcohol and l will attend live events that I like. If I can spend less than $1500 in the USA, should easily be able to live off that amount or less in Thailand.

Good points. As someone who has worked as an ex-pat full-time freelancer for 13 years now, you can definitely make an average of 1K per month if you stay focused, but the problem with Thailand is not just the rent and living expenses; it's the damn VISA. If you're on an ED visa, you're gonna spend about 50K baht per year. Another potential dealbreaker for many (myself included) is the fact that it seems you now need insurance just to get an extension (you need to extend your ED visa every three months even if you make a 1-year deal with a school), frequent policy changes and new restrictions notwithstanding. Would be nice if someone has found a solution to this for Chiangmai (or other areas). Thai laws literally change on a weekly basis and are often confusing and disjointed. Basically, if you're from a western country, probably not a good idea to set your mind on staying there for the next 20 years, unless you've found some kind of visa deal I haven't heard of (unlikely), or are willing to spend 30K USD on the Thail Elite visa (20 years) or 18K for 5 years (going up to 20K next year). Then of course there's marriage, but that comes with it's own risks I guess. Basically, China is gaining a stronger and stronger foothold in the Thai gov, and they clearly DO NOT want westerner's there anymore. So unless you have a minimum of 16K to stay there for 5 years, or are married, visa is going to be a headache. Btw, even the O-type (retirement) visa has just become a LOT more restrictive and many retirees are leaving for the Phillipines due to the new financial and insurance restrictions. Good luck guys.

I'm sure $1000 per month will serve you well but it's also true (and you do mention it) that one needs to live a sensible life also. For my part, I lived in Spain for 3.5 years with about €1500 each month. That's fine but it did spiral quickly out of control at times. And you have to take into account non-daily expenses. Insurance. Health. Things going wrong. Stuff you have to buy. Buffer. Visa runs. If you DO plan on living on $1000 per month in Thailand then make very sure that you've got the basics covered and make sure that you've got a buffer that you don't touch at all unless you really need it one day. If something happens and/or you suddenly need a good chunk of cash and you don't have it then you can find yourself in real trouble very fast. Best of luck to all adventurers out there.

Your discussion in this video describes me VERY accurately... Previously an environmental professional, retired from a government agency with modest pension -- have since worked for a non-profit and dabbled a LITTLE in consulting... but never really was self-sufficient as a free-lancer. With that, my question: While the ability to make some supplemental income interests me... ... I'm also interested in how I might simply be useful -- to CONTRIBUTE to the community in ways other than just being another drop in the bucket for the tourist economy. Especially as so many Thai people are struggling to get back on their feet due to the Covid pandemic. I've got some professional skills (land & resource conservation, document composition & editing, etc.) and don't mind getting my hands dirty in construction, maintenance, etc. Among other roles, I was a wildland firefighter for 34 seasons. So, is there an opportunity for a farang like me to be a useful contributing member of Thai society -- with something other than his pocketbook?

It's hard to imagine how much I could earn online. Now I am working 40 hours a week, working online besides. But I am tired after a day's work. Could I work for 20 hours online? We will never know till I do it. Inspirational video Brett. Cheers.

I'm ready to move over as soon as the pandemic is over. Is it hard to come over on a tourist visa and then just stay for good and go through the application process while on tourist visa?

If you fly in and stay at a quarantine hotel, then after 90 days do a visa run, when you come back, do you have to do the quarantine hotel again?
