A follow up to my video titled "CHORD PROGRESSION SECRET: Melody First". This video goes into some greater detail on how you can go about implementing the technique discussed there. Hopefully it fills in the gaps for those who were confused!

'(...) we're making musical things instead of just playing the scales for the sake of playing the scales' And I think this is why I love your tutorials so much! You give us all that knowledge, but together with a little guide on how to actually apply that knowledge; showing us the context and application really makes me wanting to replicate and try it myself. Thank you!

From what I've taken from your previous tip video on creating a chord progression with a melody I've come to exactly the point/phase mentioned in this video, which is deciding which chords I wanna use and through practices I then memorize the shapes and build on my own set of patterns/rules. It's real fun practicing these things while having phrasing and dynamics in mind, imho playing with both melody and chord harmony is the only way especially for solo guitarists who got no friends playing instruments or know how to program backing tracks or drums.

if you needed to write a baseline underneath a progression using this method, how would you do so ? would you need to follow the roots of the chords?
@samuelstone242
@samuelstone242 11 месяцев назад
Thats a good question. I, personally, think you could just follow the usual method for writing bass lines

This is great info! After all these years I'm starting to understand this. Watched a ton of videos and yours filled some holes for me. Thanks! More insight please.

If the melody is in a certain key, then use functional harmony to drive the chords. But to keep things simple, without theory, just find the pentatonic scale in that key and choose chords from that scale so you have fewer but nicer options fo choose from. Say your melody is C D E, in the key of C major, then the pentatonic scale is C D E G A, and you can use C Dmin Amin, or C G Amin, or Dmin G Amin, etc. you can also explore other pentatonic scales with one note of a difference, like F major (F G A C D) or G major (G A B D E). And remember C maj pentatonic scale = A min pentatonic scale so that's what you want for a minor melody line

Trevor, you rule. I appreciate the practical advice. How do you decide which notes to use make up your chord? For example are you targeting a certain interval in relation to the root of the chord?

Can someone shed some light into what an upper note actually means? I’m almost getting what he’s saying here but not really sure what upper note means.
@TrevorWongMusic
@TrevorWongMusic 3 года назад
I just mean the highest pitched note in the chord. In this case, the note usually on the highest string in your chord

At about 3:13 you seemed to be using notes "not" from the scale of D in your chord search. I think I saw a bass note like Ab. Is it ok to go outside the scale? If so how does that work? Thanks!
@samuelstone242

Does the melody necessarily have to be the last note of the chord? I've written compositions where the melody is whatever note of the chord I want it to be.
