One of our favorite things about gardening is watching all the changes that happen in our yard as the seasons change. We love watching our raised beds go from full of soil, to full of seedlings, to full of large healthy plants that give us food. We also love planting trees and watching how the whole yard grows after that tree starts to provide shade. What we usually fail to notice, though, is how much our soil has changed since we first started gardening.
Two years ago, our yard was full of rock-hard dirt and gravel. It was embarrassing to look at, and not enjoyable to stand in, either. There was no shade, and everything but some oleander died. Digging a hole for a plant was usually an hour-long ordeal of chiseling away at the caliche with a shovel. It wasn't until we started applying mulch that we really noticed a difference.
Today we want to show you what has happened since we started laying down mulch in our yard. After adding layers of leaves, pine needles, grass clippings, and wood chips, our soil transformed. Now digging a hole takes only minutes! Our plants are healthier and we don't have to water as frequently to keep them happy.
Look around your neighborhood and see what mulch you have access to. Is a neighbor mowing their lawn or raking leaves? Is a landscaper chipping some tree branches? Ask if you can have it! Your plants will thank you. :) And as an added bonus, we get less bugs inside our house now because they have a better habitat under the mulch outside!
What is your favorite organic material to use as mulch? What is your favorite benefit to using mulch? Let us know in the comments!

If you want happiness, plant something! We hope everyone has an AWESOME day!

love your videos guys your educating those who don't know or understand mother nature i got told myself when i used all the gum leaves, gum nuts and the branches in my garden to make a raised bed everyone goes no you cant do that it be to acidic and it will burn your plants and they will die don't do it they said. Well that is not the case in my raised bed I'm growing together broccoli, sugar loaf cabbage, red cabbage, red and brown onions, beetroot, capsicums, cos lettuce, zucchinis, iceberg lettuce, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and spring onions or (pulling onions) they are happily growing all in the same bed and they are planted mixed up all through the bed and I'm amazed with the results it works well for me. my gum leaves and nuts that rotted down into a rich black soil. So give it a go and when it works well you will be rewarded and if you fail try other methods until you find one that works well for you. and looking at your videos you have found the magic formula so it works well so don't change it unless its broken Happy gardening oh and have an awesome day lol Tracy from Australia

I have found that in my area it takes about 6 months with rain and watering to start transforming soil into something that can be successfully planted into and after 1 year it really starts to get pretty good! I am now wanting to do some street plantings on my verge but after killing myself with a mattock (digging down more than 2 inches was near impossible and that was just to lay some wooden sleepers 2x6 as a border) I have realised I need to use the mulch method because if I try planting into that dead soil the trees prob will not survive the summer!

Mulch really does work wonders, check out Geoff Lawton's videos on RU-vid sometime! :D

Do you till the mulch into the soil at all? If you don't, does it only become compost on the top surface and not penetrate the native soil at all?
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 5 лет назад
We don't till the mulch into the soil, but the bug life underneath and the animal life and foot traffic above help blend it into the native soil. :)

on our neighborhood online site people are often giving away lots of wood chips when they are redoing their houses or yards, as well as dirt....you'd be surprised what you can get for free!

Awesome video. Great info as always. One question though, what did you do about the rocks, are they under the good soil ? No problems for plants?
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 5 лет назад
Rocks are common in nature and shouldn't cause any problems for plants, but you can remove the rocks that you have if they are in the way :D

SALIL, ROCKS ARE MINERALS. JUST LAYER ORGANIC MATTER Example. your rocky soil, compost , grass , leaves, food scraps, leaves, hey , grass. Keep layering and let it rot over the winter

I am new to gardening other than a few tomato plants. My soil is 50% sand, 50% tan clay. Most of the yard is that way do to a large construction project. Western Illinois here and I have no earthworms. How do I begin to amend soil for a garden?
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 5 лет назад
That's a different kind of soil than what we have here, but we'd suggest laying down some mulch (leaves, grass clippings, wood chips) to add organic material and stabilize the pH. In our backyard, worms love leaves, so they should appear in time! You can also buy some red wigglers from the bait shop and kickstart their population in your yard :)

thanks for addressing this. soil is so important. but doesn't it take nitrogen out of the soil, while it's breaking down? is that a concern for growing stuff in the short run?
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 4 года назад
Great observation! Wood chips are fine on top of the soil, but you're right, if they get mixed into the soil, they will rob nitrogen from it.

After 3 or 4 years there will probably be more life in it like worms, micro bacteria etc. :)
