For this very problem I have Cool Edit Pro on a old laptop. It has a feature called KILL MIC RUMBLE that perfectly corrects plosives. I just have to highlight the entire waveform and click OK. And it doesn’t touch the other vocals, only the plosives.

What I do is, I find the problematic area and reduce the gain on that particular area. But I'm still getting those plosives cause I can't reduce it all the way because then I can't hear the consonant sounds. This approach is wrong, right? Will try the eq technique.
@SPLMixing
@SPLMixing 2 года назад
It's wrong if it doesn't get you the results you're after. That technique will work for esses, for example, but I recommend eq for plosives.

In Pro Tools, this is now non-destructive using clip effects, rather than the audio suite

I think that you'll find you get a significant reduction in highs doing that. You'd be better off placing the mic off axis out of direct line with the breath imho

Could you do one for FL studio using stock plugins
@SPLMixing
@SPLMixing 3 года назад
I don't have that program. But if you have destructive editing capabilities in FL Studio, like the Audiosuite in Pro Tools, where you can imprint effects directly to audio without being able to use or adjust the plugin after that, you just need to high pass plosives with a stock EQ.

@RawGreenTheAnimator

Is the gain only on the frequencies the plosives take place on? Otherwise I presume that you're likely taking away some clarity from those consonants.

@SPLMixing

You can if you chop the audio region and process the chopped region with a high passed eq.
@Layarion
@Layarion 4 года назад
@@SPLMixing you mean if I put the problem areas on their own track?
@SPLMixing
@SPLMixing 4 года назад
In the edit screen, break the regions and process them directly on the same audio track with a high pass eq is probably what I would do. No need to split these out to a different track, but that could likely work too.

Still, there’s a lot of manual finding and editing involved. We need an AI to find the plosives or hard consonants automatically. Surprised this hasn’t been implemented yet. AI is excellent at pattern recognition. The idea is you would train the the plugin on just a few of your most egregious problem regions. Then you set it into a “find mode” to run along the track and isolate multiple instances of the target sound for attenuation. Even the EQ or attenuation process could be AI automated to match local perceptual loudness. None of this is rocket science these days. I keep looking out for a developer to produce such a plugin, but nothing yet.
@SPLMixing

Izotope RX has done this for years. This is the free way to do the same thing.

@@SPLMixing From what I can tell it is essentially a form of band EQ driving a compressor. I can see how this is useful for B and P pops. But there is no spectral learn-function in order to target a specific combination of frequencies unique to sounds like Sh, Ch, and T, C. Pretty unsophisticated. The only way I've found to do this is by hand-selecting regions on the sonogram and attenuating them. I think RX has some kind of frequency correction tool that semi-automates this, but still involves hand editing. My point is, if there exists an AI-driven bird call detector app (I have one on my iPhone) that recognizes 100s of bird species from unique sonogram patterns, it seems a short hop to designing an app that can sample and automatically detect a few species of hard consonants multiple times on a vocal track for modification.
@SPLMixing
@SPLMixing Год назад
Ch, t, sh, sounds are best attacked using targeted dynamic eq or a de-esser. Relying solely on technology to make artistic choices for you is a recipe for disaster. AI has its limitations.

@SPLMixing
@SPLMixing Год назад
Plosives by nature are only low frequencies, concerning audio problems associated with recording too close to a microphone. Other plosives in speech, which are mid-high frequencies, are best treated with dynamic eq or a de-esser.

Google's definition is broadly defining plosives related to speech. My video covers plosives in relation to vocals and was never intended to cover spoken word plosives, such as k, etc. In my 12+ years I've been working as a mixing engineer I have not once wondered how to fix a 'k' plosive. In a live scenario or from a recording? There are no live tools that I can think of and I'm not sure what would be the point. Editing an existing recording on a small Android smartphone would be cumbersome and difficult. You can do this easily by transferring the recording to pc and using a free app like audacity.
