I’ve gone from about 30 percent body fat to about 20, and I feel sooooo much better. It wasn’t even that hard. Just reduced calories and walked it off, it is simple and I wish the fitness industry would shut up about macros. Great video Lane

I’ve come to realize that my diet needs to be flexible. I’ve been extreme with my food for as long as I can remember. I’m frankly tired of it. So I eat what I want. I don’t over indulge. I eat 95% whole, natural foods and I’m happier than I’ve been in a long time. Food and nutrition are easily my obsession and it’s horrible for my mental health.

Well in the context of weight loss it works like this .. but there are more and less healthy versions of "fat" and "carbs" and food in general. You don't want to eat trans-fats or heavy metals .. so what you eat still matters in the health context regardless if you are on the diet or not.

You’re comparing apples to oranges. Losing weight is perhaps the most important aspect, ( if obese or overweight) in improving lipid profile and decreased risk of cardiovascular disease, but if one increases their intake of fiber and decreases saturated fat, at their healthy or particular BMI, their profile improves. From what I know you can get hipovitaminose in a specific vitamin, and I think each one has its own consequences. The one that I know for example is u get Scurvy from a severe lack of Vitamin C, which makes you really tired, with muscle soreness and other stuff as well. As for Minerals, I think the most common one is iron which makes you anemic which if i'm not mistaken causes you start to produce less red blood cells. I think there's something with calcium too about bone density and osteoporosis, but I'm not sure. I just know it's important LOL. That's for like specific things, as for vitamins and minerals as a whole, I actually don't know, but I assume that a combination of lack of them may cause sever conditions or diseases. Again, I'm not and expert by any means that's just what I know from losing weight and getting healthier with time. In my case, I'm not a big vegetables, legumes and fruits guy, so I take my multivitamin every day, just to make sure.

Hi Layne. I’d like to know you’re opinion of Dr. Valter Longo’s assertion in the Netflix program “Down to Earth” that people only need about 0.4g of protein per lb body weight and that groups of long lived people who eat high protein diets don’t exist. Dr. Rhonda Patrick seems to have a more nuanced take on this and he might also if it weren’t crammed into a short segment of a Netflix show. I assume this figure is geared more toward the average person who doesn’t workout much. Thanks!

Obsession with studies misses the point. Do you really need a study to know what no single food will kill you overnight or that real food is health-giving but food like substances are not? The things studies are capable of measuring aren’t the full picture and that’s assuming a study is perfect which of course it never is. Even the things blood tests test for aren’t necessarily determinative of anything. There’s no one diet that’s most healthful in any case and the proof will be your health status in 20yrs not over the term of a ‘study’.
@TammyLeeFitness
@TammyLeeFitness 4 года назад
Wow. If that were the case I’d be sick and almost dead. I eat raw honey on a spoon for a snack and drink pure maple syrup from the bottle when I want. I’m an avid cyclist and eating sugar is one very easy and quick way I can get more carbs. 😂 I use that sugar up pretty fast. But I have always had a love for surgery things and eat them without quilt. I’m 48 and in perfect heath. No illnesses or allergies. I maintain a healthy weight year round. Sugar isn’t bad in itself. Eating too much sugar, especially while sick and overweight, is not a great idea. People just repeat stuff without a clue of what they are talking about. Everyone’s an expert these days. 🙄

I think this is slightly misguided advice or at least there needs to be a caveat that you don't need to track micronutrients PROVIDED you get at least 6 servings of fruit and veg a day. Because might simply hit their macros and calories eating Pizzas and think it's okay as long as they stay within those limits.

So you really don't think the balance of fats/carbs, once total calories and protein are accounted for, matter (not just health, but body composition)? I'm not questioning you, I'm asking if I'm hearing you correctly. What about in a meal setting? Does the whole "eating carbs with fats" matter, in the grand scheme of things (again, considering calories first, then protein content)?

Have you got the data for diet adherence and long term effectiveness of diets? I always hear that over 90% of diets fail, but that seems to be a 1950's look at diets. Could you look at diet, effectiveness and adherence if there are any modern studies available?
@tektako
@tektako 4 года назад
What’s a diet? What’s your definition of long term effectiveness? If you mean weight/fat loss diets then 100% of them work over the short term of days or weeks maybe even months. But that’s not the point. Chopping off a limb would produce immediate weight loss too but is that what you want? The real test is once the excess weight is lost does it stay off over the long term so that you don’t have to repeat the diet again? That means many months or years later. What’s more does the weight stay off without long term suppression of metabolism and WITHOUT having to eat ridiculously low calories. Adherence is only one factor, will vary person to person and means more than just fleeting motivation. No diet data or study is going to tell you these things except in an abstract and general way. The only data that’s going to matter is your own experimentation on yourself. Imagine if the results of some study or other turned out only to apply to men within 10% of ‘normal’ weight but not obese men and you were obese? Imagine the time you’d waste slavishly following an inappropriate protocol. LN has at various times been shredded, normal, stocky, dropped weight and increased weight. AFAIK He’s never been obese though. So clearly he knows how to manipulate body composition at will given his metabolism and lifestyle. What he did though to achieve changes my not be what you’re prepared to do and vice versa.

I don't understand the fiber thing. Could you do a video on why fiber is so important?
@tomerwolberg37
@tomerwolberg37 4 года назад
My guess he's talking about the gut microbiome affects, because there is some data (even when calories are equated) that suggests certain benefits for certain bacteria (like reducing depression symptoms for example) which fiber seems to bring those gut bacteria. I'm definitely not on expert on the field and don't really understand that so take everything I say with a grain of salt, but if I'm not wrong most of the data on it is either pretty weak or strong but shows relatively small benefits, so there are probably some benefits to eating a lot of fiber (and not just because it helps being at a calorie deficit) but they are probably not very big. There are also downsides (like bloating, and overall feeling after you eat a lot of it). But also there's the huge benefit that it helps you be in a calorie deficit and feel full.

Various studies define low carb differently. The stuff they use for the carbs also differ. I suggest to you that a study involving 100g of sweet potato as the carb source may not give same results as 100g of pure glucose or fructose or whatever else. In the world of real food there are synergistic effects involved because very few foods are 100% any given macro. Nobody’s ever going to eat 100g of day pure fructose though and when you get it from a whole food source it’s never going to be the same. The chow they feed rats in studies similarly isn’t what we’d encounter in the real world where we eat food not simply macros. On a keto diet leaving aside purists and zealots

Layne, you've brought up weight regain statistics before, that they're extremely abysmal. I was wondering how often those statistics change. In other words, maybe weight regain happens earlier and more frequently in Western society now because of the industrial and cultural shifts around food and technology. Whereas, in prior decades, obesity was less prevalent due to various societal factors: less abundance, better overall diet, no smartphones / extreme technology dependence, etc. I'm hoping an intentional cultural shift can happen which can bring better balance back to society, but I'm not sure that genie can be put back in its bottle, so to speak.

there are two components to your bodyfat setpoint. The first is genetical, you can´t really change that. The second, is environmental. In Western societies the availability for high calorie foods is so great it is difficult to dodge it day in day out which makes fat loss more difficult.

For example people in a remote part of Italy where they still live off the land, 300 of them out of 2000 residents that live there are over 100 yrs old! they didnt put it down to genetics solely but what they ate, i think many even drank a lot of wine and smoked but what they ate counter acted it if you will and many are overweight. They said they had very low rate of alzheimers and cancers there. Also the Tsimane people have the healthiest arteries in the world eating a mainly natural high carb diet, again our modern western diseases were pretty much unheard of there. This is known, for example they think cancers causes are anywhere between 70 to 90 % from diet, lifestyle choices. Layne looks at things to simplistically, we already know the blood markers he speaks of improve just from loosing weight, we've seen it happen with a low calorie mcdonalds diet even! but there's more to optimal health than only those blood markers and the food you eat is what gets you there. This is ridiculous you are dodging the issue. It is very possible to be deficient in micronutrients whilst hitting a good macronutrient ratio out of the park: "got my protein in, got a healthy deficit going" yet there's no minerals, vitamins etc. There's your health risk and you talk about this on the joe rogan show when you were there with that friend of yours, the army(?)neurologist who is big on keto? You said people with a lower metabolism (hello dieters) need to be careful with their cheatmeals and snacks because they have less leeway when it comes to "crappy food", or something to that extend. The slower your metabolism, the more nutrient dense the food should be to get the bare minimum in and most food that comes in a package (nothing against that) is usually a whole lot of energy and doesn't have a lot of nutritional value. I actually don't know if it is most foods but let's pretend for a wee bit that nutrient density is reserved for wholefoods. This is why (claim supported by anecdotal evidence alone coming up) why all these fruitarians in the public eye are close to death after five years because they are deficient in almost everything, despite their wholefood diet. I do not believe that is due to a protein deficiency alone. I think it's mainly because they don't understand bio-availability and get their maths wrong. Which is ridiculous when you consider how much effort they put into it in order to prove the validity of their diet to themselves. So, the slower your metabolism, the less leeway you have eating crappy foods. Your words and I wholeheartedly agree. And that begs the question because one of the claims of the low carb camp is that it is superior to a high carb diet where nutrient density is concerned, meaning that you can definitely say one is superior over the other ones you get to a certain level of maintenance calories. I have no idea if any of this claim from the lowcarb camp is true (anecdotal evidence seems to support it) nor do I know where this calorie threshold is where the choice between low or high carb becomes serious. Maybe it's a 1000 calories which renders the whole point moot. Maybe it's 2000 calories which makes it pretty important because it's not open for debate that nutrient deficiencies are detrimental to your health.

Actually thinking about it more, these seniors are usually not muscular but not frail either. Does it mean that past a certain age, muscle would entropy to that stage or simply that those with more muscular physique tend not to live to that age (maybe not possible to be naturally that muscular at that age)? Wonder how training should be after retirement. After all, retirement in the 60s would just be past mid-life for someone who can live to their 90s-100s!

@@Moglis00 still being bullshit, you cant just focus on macros and micros alone, foods are a whole, they have diferent chemicals, different extructure, there are more than 100 different types of fatty acids and you just reduct this to sat/unsat fat, nutrition is not that simple to comprehend, but if you want to believe this the problem is yours
