Remember, there's *no* security reason to pair a fingerprint sensor to a phone; it's just a sensor, and it's like arguing that replacing the keyboard on a PC locked with a password could somehow let you in; that's not how it works, and if it *does* work then your security wasn't real. Don't let anyone argue any different.

The base model iphone 7 cost the same amount as the base model iphone 6 though? Same for the iPhone 5. Apple used to *advertise* phones as starting at like $200-$300 because at the time it was popular for phone companies to upcharge on their service but sell the phone itself for cheap with a contract, but buying a base model iPhone without a contract originally was $500, had hit $650 by the iPhone 7, and has hit $800 now, which can mostly be attributed to inflation.
@Leos74
@Leos74 Год назад
@@sparky6757 yeah, Android Authority, the site where I found this information, states that all of the prices are with a contract, yet from the base model 6s to 7, there is a price jump from 250 to 808 inflation-adjusted $$. Did they stop advertising their phones with contracts?

I hate them removing the headphone jack but it seems like ALL phones are doing this save for a few... so I don't know what to say. Planned Obsolescence In economics and industrial design, planned obsolescence (also called built-in obsolescence or premature obsolescence) is a policy of planning or designing a product with an artificially limited useful life or a purposely frail design, so that it becomes obsolete after a certain pre-determined period of time upon which it decrementally functions or suddenly ceases to function, or might be perceived as unfashionable. The rationale behind this strategy is to generate long-term sales volume by reducing the time between repeat purchases (referred to as "shortening the replacement cycle"). It is the deliberate shortening of a lifespan of a product to force people to purchase functional replacements.

I cracked the home button on my old iPhone 8 a few years back (same style as the 7). Went to a 3rd party repair place, got a new one that lacked Touch ID, but still did the trick. The glass part of the new one broke a year or two later by pressing it too hard, but somehow still worked by touching my finger to the metal contacts. At that point, I just said “screw it”, and continued on as is. Eventually got it replaced with a new phone, but the busted remains of my home button still dubiously work.

If your house never floods or burned down, you never got paid out for it. The point of some form of insurance isnt so you can cash out within the insurance plan period, but rather, it exists so you have peace of mind that IF something goes wrong, you wont be bankrupted trying to cover the costs of the adverse event. This does not mean I agree with Apple's practices by any stretch, but rather calling you out on a very bad viewpoint with respect to the insurance.

Apple, the KINGS of e-waste! MeBi makes a home button that functions, but no TouchID, but the home button at least works. Now, you can transfer the 25-pin BGA chip on the TouchID flex, which is a HUGE PAIN, but does work, as long as you transfer it to a working home button flex with the same resistor and cap placement (LOW-TEMP SOLDER!!). You need microsoldering experience to make the repair, because if you kill the chip, you're done. The worst is the displays though. The i6S programmer from i2C, as well as DLZ's serialization copy/clone tools are great, but for the 13 Pro Max and 14 Pro Max, the only way to get rid of the original display message AND keep true tone & auto-brightness, even on Apple (Samsung) OLEDS is to transfer all 3 chips to the new panel (the 'glass' chip is especially problematic, as it's EXTREMELY fragile). Mechanic makes an AWESOME stencil kit, but we shouldn't have to do that. I'm very close to just not repairing iPhones anymore. It's getting to be too much trouble.

Companies trying to act like they care about the environment, actually don't give a $hit about it. Look at a 20 year old vehicle; It's probably still running without an issue. But now imagine your new car in 20 years. No way it still runs right w/ out some issue. If they cared about the environment, stuff like this shouldn't be happening with vehicles or phones. (At least with vehicles, non oem parts probably work and are readily available. but, you get the point; it shouldn't break down in 20 years anyway) and planned obsolescence is big factors
@markbennett6658
@markbennett6658 Год назад
To play the devil’s advocate, Hugh implies that e-waste just means these phones go into landfill, which is not necessarily the case and much of the materials they’re constructed from are recycled in the first place. The iPhone 7 used as an example is already nearly 7 years old, doesn’t get the latest software updates and is therefore reaching obsolescence. It’s probably had a battery replacement and has the old LITHIUM battery been recycled? Lastly, considering the latest devices are $1000 plus you’d think people would look after them better. When my daughters went from iPhone 6 (easily repairable for cheap) to iPhone X I insisted on cases and screen protectors from day 1 and those phones survived several years use damage free. A lot of the issue is to do with people’s mindset about disposability and care for their possessions!

There are ways for newer iphones to fix certain things like face-id, screen, backcamera and battery messages. But those are only mainly if you're skilled enough and sometimes the defective part is needed. Its so dumb, samsung is more friendlier in swapping homebuttons etc. There should be no reason why apple locks that capability.

Fighting against these criminal practices of the apple is a losing battle as long as the average customer simply doesn't care about the planet or the protection of their consumer rights, preferring to have the latest model at all costs. The problem is us, not Apple.

As much as i hate foldables, i still agree (in part tho).with samsung for these expensive displays: flexing oled technology is expensive to buy,as much to produce, and every year companies are forced to make these panels more resistent to everyday's abuse, which is costly. I still think paying almost 1000 bucks for a screen replacement is way overkill but i can see the reasoning behind. On apple's side tho: thats just being douches to your customers: software locking is the biggest cause of apple's product e-waste, due to causing a phone repair almost impossible (excluding the billion-type screwdrivers they force you to use) and forcing you to fix it from them, and charge you so much just to force you to say: "you know what, i'll just buy a new one". But i still kinda agree to apple for this... The average apple consumer is too dense and brainwashed to reason like a normal human being

People need to start buying the phones that really suite them, not the most popular one. If you just can't take care of your phone, get a cheap phone. If you know you can't afford both buying a $1k phone and paying for a broken screen just don't do it. I get the 3rd party repair stuff but let's be honest. We just go to a 3rd party because we can't afford oem repairs. Is all on us really, expect no mayor changes from their end at all.

Absolutely. This very issue has been on my mind for some time now. We are all being punished for climate crimes of which consumption is one such crime . Not only does Apple trickle feed us modest improvements to their phones, they also launch those modest improvement every year with a new phone, making the previous year’s phone effectively redundant. Then they go out of their way to prevent repairs through over complication of assembled components , then they add serial numbers to those components. Very unsatisfactory.

Sure, W11 seems to run fine on my has-tpm-but-is-too-old-lol laptop, but who knows if Microsoft doesn't decide to just not push new updates on hardware that bypassed those requirements? It's part of why I just choose not to update my 100% fully upgradeable PC, despite MS giving me those oh so helpful messages asking me to "upgrade". I've always been an early adopter of Windows ever since I finally learned how to install it back in the XP days, but THIS is just too much for me. I'll keep 11 on my laptop just because I know MS knows it's running on the "wrong" hardware, but I'm keeping 10 until it stops getting support.

But as Louis Rossman stated, people will truly speak with where their money goes, not with their words. So most of this comment section will be annoyed by the lack of repairability in their life, while doing nothing to change it, just like how a gambling addict complains about their unluckiness as he loses, dice after dice, roll after roll, but will always continue to gamble.

My old iPhone 7 has it's screen shattered (The home button was still working fine). This was a few years ago, when the 13line just released. I went to an Apple-certified reseller and refurbisher, and they charged €190 for the new screen. I told them it's ridiculous, since my job sold 7's at the time for around €160 for the same storage. They told me that, because it's a genuine part it costs that much. I laughed in their face and told them I'd be much better off getting a screen from iFixIt and trying myself, even with no prior experience. That was the moment I switched away from Apple. Tried the Z Flip3 for a while before it broke (had warranty coverage), after which I decided to buy the Nothing Phone (1). I have never looked back

The saddest part of this is the we don't care problem. Too many people don't care about 3rd party repair and it has lead to apple being able to do what they have so far. And now we are seeing the ramifications of that. I don't think that it is too far gone but we need people to keep speaking out. Right now apples repair program is still not enough because it runs into the issue of it is cheaper to just take it in for repair. And with the pairing problem we will keep falling into this cycle which is just stupid.
