The battery technology has been the limiting factor for electric outboards, inboards and cars since about 1910. They are still very heavy and expensive per kilowatt hour of capacity compared to gasoline and diesel. The current crop of motors are plenty good in themselves, but the power cells still hold them back. Most of my power tools and my lawn mower are battery electric. I really like them. And prefer them over the older corded electric and gas power. A 30 to 50 kWh outboard would be great on my 14 foot classic fiberglass outboard runabout, but a 400 to 800 pound battery pack to run it is still to heavy for the weight capacity of the boat. 45 to 95 pounds for 1 or 2 individual 6 gallon gas tanks remains the go to configuration and provides plenty of range for the day or two of use between fill ups (or recharges). 1 gallon of gasoline is about the equivalent of 33 kWh of electric battery capacity.

I can literally buy a mercury 250 for the cost of something that is only 50 hp rating 😂😂😂 . I think ill stick with the gas motor. But dont get me wrong im sure it has its place for some people just not for me . Not only that but if you are full throttle it you might get a couple of hours on the lake . When i fish we are out for 5 or 6 hours easy and thats not counting tournaments that are 8 hours easy.

800lbs of batteries is kinda nuts. That really limits what setup you can put this on. It's a catch 22 of needing more batteries to get range, the. You have so much weight you can't plane and need a bigger motor. I bet that x40 would push a small boat fast, but you'd almost have to pick between speed and range. Even half those batteries would make it so I could only take myself and limited to 1 passenger.
@ericklein5097
@ericklein5097 25 дней назад
Cobalt based lithium would be nearly half the weight. I'd like to see a teardown of their LiFePO4 battery. There are cobalt based lithium batteries that can get 2000+ cycles and even more if you don't cycle in the top or bottom 10%
@timlong1462
@timlong1462 25 дней назад
@@ericklein5097that would be nice, but what is the financial cost and environmental cost of all these batteries. To me electric makes a lot of sense for cars we use daily, but a pontoon might only be taken on a small cruise once a week or even month for the majority of users. Is the amount of battery worth the small amount of gasoline that it's replacing? I just see all these batteries and materials going into something that's not going to get enough use to justify.

How fun is that, I think the spot lock will be a game changer being built into this motor. I have some experience with a smaller kayak electric motor and enjoyed it for most of last year. Thanks for taking the time to share this with us all and congrats on this unique invite to be there for the reveal of this motor. Fun times, I agree, you will see a lot of interest if they can produce something for the smaller boats, I think there is probably more of us with the Jon boats then the larger boats, but then again, that is just me, I have not factual idea of that being the case. Again, great video and have a. blessed weekend my friend. Dale

What I like: heading hold, position hold, steering range which appears to reach 45 deg. left and right, integration, torque, noise level. What I'm concerned about: cost of batteries, weight of batteries, relative low energy density of batteries, outboard motor and electronics below the waterline which could make them vulnerable to leaks and damage, cost of the batteries...

Yeah man I don't make or sell them, just covering them in content. It's pretty cool from an engineering and technical stance but definitely not cost effective enough yet. Time will tell if they can get weight down, run time up, and cost down. There's definitely a lot to criticize, and true at that, but everyone has to start somewhere. It will be interesting to see where they are in 10 years, win or lose.

Give the technology around another 5-10 years and by then you'll have solid state batteries with 2-3 times the capacity with less weight and volume and much faster charging. Throw in a Sharrow propeller and you'll have some serious range and even less noise.

Great video. I'm probably in the market for an X20 or X25, preferably running at 48V, though it seems everything will be based around the 96V packs. 96V is probably a good mid-point, though 48V is favoured because of the number of solar inverters / inverters that can then power the house electrics of modern yachts and catamarans. Having the steering capabilities via a motor on the outboard and a communications cable seems so simple an idea, I'm not sure why other outboards (especially petrol ones) haven't come up with it before.

Awesome video Anthony. If you end up getting one to test here in Georgia I would love to meet up with you to test it out. Keep up the great work you are the one channel that helped me make my decision to buy an epropulsion motor for my current boat. I am currently pushing a 24’ pontoon boat with a single spirit evo. I can get up to 5.5mph on the boat by myself on a calm lake here in Georgia. I would love to see what the X series can do. It would also be great if epropulsion released the screen and the electric steering for their other lines. I love my spirit evo and top mount throttle but the new screen and the electric steering have me stoked.

Plastic prop on 50hp they need a metal prop. The Plastic props on the smaller outboards isn't as bad (less power to flex the prop). Even though I see performance loss with the Plastic I've seen videos of guys absolutely abusing one(lower power electric) while clearing fallen trees and branches out of their local "river/creek" and they hit stuff alot..they had to replace prop a few times but it's from chiping type damage they didn't loose a full blade like you would expect. I wonder if the higher hp/kw motor props would survive or just explode when they hit something.

They can understand there are tons of different vessels out there and different ways to power them. There's not a one size fits all. Whether you like it or not, there is a very large market for electric outboards. These companies are doing well. It's just a different market, man. Nobody is coming for your gas outboards. If you add up all of the weight, cost of batteries, interfaces, disposal of batteries as well as all fo the associated costs, You are a long way from market acceptance. Perhaps a small tiller unit will be acceptable. I believe in the ecology as with The EV. Perhaps that is a direction to go. With respect to a 300 hp electric motor on a bass boat, how can you justify the expense and weight. My interest would to develop better battery technology the motors will soon follow. As an aside that lower unit as well as the huge umbilical looks out of place. Five blade prop screams of torque, not speed or efficiency. Subaru is working a clean technology for the marketplace. @AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats do bass boats usually have 900-pound , 96 volt lithium ion batteries to run their trolling motors? LOL! 😂
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats Месяц назад
@brucemitchell5637 what does the weight or voltage matter? The man said water and electricity don't go well. Not water and weight or water and 96v go well. Look at an actual bass boat. 36v (3 lithiums) for trolling motor, 1 lithium for graphs/sonar accessories, sometimes 2 depending in set up, another for starting. Most new bass boats for serious anglers are running 5 or 6 lithiums. It's just crazy how so many guys are jumping on here saying "WaatUr AN EleCtriccIty DoNNT MiX". Well, the electric trolling motor was invented by Minn Kota almost 90 years ago and people have been running electric battery poweredtrolling motors ever since. This is nothing new. Just scaled up for more power and primary source of propolsion. You guys are acting like this thing runs on an extention cord through the water. For the boat in the video, if weight is your issue, it doesn't matter if it weighed 1800lbs so long as the boat it goes on is rated for that weight capacity. I know these outboards live rent free in a lot of heads out there, I'm sure the battery powered drill triggered a lot of dinosaurs that swore by their plug in corded drill. They probably had the same arguments. Not enough power, run time, too expensive. Well go to Home Depot now. I'm not saying electric outboards will replace gas, nor do I care one way or another. I just cover the content and respect the engineering behind new marine equipment. Time will tell if these will ever take root.

The'll be looking at around 60,000.00 ++ too much money just for a 40hp for pontoon boats I like the idea of an electric motor, but for people that make 25 to 60,000.00 a year, your going to be losing allot of customers. or used on a 22' or longer especially when gas is cheaper and lighter and will be able to go farther, they're not going to be selling very many.

I seen 1 option only on the internet, and I never saw it anywhere else to power vehicles. I have yet to see it power boats. I think it can though! I know there are people who are inspired, and I believe this is the point you would have to become to figure out what all of the options are to power boats. I understand this video is about electric outboards, and I hope other people can explore other options if they don't like electric outboards.

Almost every new boat on the market comes with lithium batteries for accessory, starting, and trolling motor batteries. I've thrown lithium batteries in the lake on my channel. There are many types of lithiums from Lithium Ion , to Lithium Iron Phosphate, to Nickel Manganese, to Cobalt. Also different rating on environment. That's like saying good luck driving a car because gas is flammable. lol. No difference here.

@@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats vehicles do catch fire but can be put out if caught early enough….once a lithium battery starts on fires there’s no putting it out….it has to burn out and it’ll take everything with it..
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats Месяц назад
Yes, I'm aware. We ship lithiums. UPS has to put a decal on the side indicating there are lithiums on board. My point is, everything is lithium now. Your phone. Drill batteries. Heck, my new bait aerator from Engel is lithium. Every bass boat on the BASS tour has 5 or 6 lithiums. It's standard regardless of how they can potentially burn. I've never seen a lithium marine battery catch on fire. Not saying it hasn't happened, just never seen it. You'd probably have better odds of getting in a car crash than your lithium catching on fire. But I don't go around telling people driving cars is a bad idea.

ACTUALLY made it 83 miles before needing recharged for 2 plus hours. THey are all lying. THe sad thing here, the f150 you can get out and walk if you need to./ When this boat dies in the middle of nowhere... you are screwed and if a storm hits like every afternoon in florida.... can be deadly. Maybe 50 years from now something will actually work as claimed but electric is not there. ...cool idea though.

Idk man. I'm not a electric only advocate guy. I appreciate all advancements in the electric world and in technology in general. I can say this- My brother in law has had a lightning f150 for over a year. He drives it from Roswell GA to visit us in Athens GA. About a 150 mile trip. He's never ran out of battery. Always had plenty. As far as this outboard, I'm glad it made you laugh. Everything starts somewhere though. I'm not defending the cost, run time or weight, but I'm smart enough to know these things can't come straight out the gate perfect in every way. Eventually the cost and weight will come down, run time go up. Or not. Then you can still laugh. Thanks for watching though.

The my couldn’t beat them on merit especially the Japanese motors, so they had to ban the sale of them. It took 10 years for four strokes to even get close to the performance and they’re still much heavier.
