The Emotional Depth of SHREK | therapist explains

My Little Thought Tree

It's time to discuss the emotional depth of the first shrek movie. An analysis of some of the psychology behind shrek and fiona, though with a greater focus on meaning, love, the beauty of imperfection, and how a parody can be so, so much more than just a parody. Shrek is a wonderful film worthy of all the video essay people have made on it.
My Little Thought Tree is my channel for drawing out the deeper meaning and emotion in film, TV, and the world at large through relaxed, analytical video essays. I am a professional counsellor and often draw on my psychology and therapy background to better understand characters, themes, and emotion in fiction. I upload every Saturday and occasionally on Tuesdays, if I'm feeling productive.

It really was worth it! I loved the part about how hard it can be to open yourself up to others after you’ve experienced repeated rejection, and that it’s important to try and assess the situation for what it is instead of immediately assuming people are rejecting you again.

When Shrek’s popularity rose, other movie studios wanted to follow suit and utilized the formula of toilet jokes, references, satire and celebrity voices. However, people tended to overlook the themes and messages of the first two films. It wasn’t just the humor that made Shrek great, but it was also because he taught us that true love is unpredictable and pre judging people based on what they are is wrong.

Fiona talks to Shrek the first moments she meets him the exact same way her dolls in her room spoke in Shrek 2. I assume this was completely on purpose "a token of my gratitude' was said basically word for word. She mustve said it over and over in anticipation for when prince charming actually came

I massively loved Shrek as a kid. Watched it hundreds of times over. Everything you say resonates, but also I loved it because I was a no-girly girl, and Shrek was a film that didn't feel like it was for girls or boys, and Fiona's character shows gender stereotypes aren't as important as what's inside

The movie was structured to be a satire of Disney/Pixar movies, so its meme potential was there from the start. It was designed so, from the inclusion of cringe inducing pop music to the way classic tale characters behaved. Nevertheless, they still wanted to tell a story and not just "meme" Pixar. So they created this amazing tale that you're now dissecting.

I liked Shrek for its romance, and I feel you did an amazing job at explaining it. I've been with my partner for almost 8 years now and we're FAR FROM perfect. We get on each other's nerves, poke fun at eachother, comfortable at having a laugh at a fart/burp...even laughing when silly things happen during more adult times. That's the kind of romance you want honestly. That comfortability and love you have with your significant other with no worries about being perfect, just looking at building eachother up

I really loved Shrek when it came out. I've only seen it once or twice, so I don't remember too much of it, but I am right there with him in feeling ugly and unlovable. The Internet is nice for that, as it forces people to see you and not your face. I was never a Disney kid, so I agreed with all of Shrek's teasing of the Disney franchise. It was a wonderful movie. I know I saw the second one too; not sure if I ever saw any that came after that, but I'm very happy to watch any videos you do on Shrek in all its versions. :)

Shrek was a parody but it didn't through all it's eggs into one basket. It also had tremendous heart, a great story, great voice acting, animation and even though the songs in the movie weren't made for it, they still fit the story that was being told and the tone of the movie in general. A lot of millennials and gen z, when they hear songs like All Star probably think of Shrek because they have become so iconic with the movie 💚

I do kind of love what Shrek Forever After did for exploring Fiona's trauma in the dragon-guarded castle. By that account, there's definitely a lot she was repressing in her early stories, since that movie treats us to a Fiona who never got the escapism of a fairy tale ending. She's slow to trust, keeps to herself, and has a LOT of anger.

First of all, what an incredible analysis! I love so, so much that you actually covered Fiona's side of things. I think often her side of the story is glazed over because there's a lot of discomfort (especially for men) surrounding the concept of Fiona having a larger side (both personality- and physical-wise), so I love seeing it being gracefully explained in an unbiased way by a thoughtful and knowledgeable man. (Also, thank you for being the only human male alive that's okay with women passing gas as much as men. Childish and crude humor should be for everyone who enjoys it!!) Amazing job on all of this!

Then, when she started showing more ogrish traits (burping, fighting, and not wretching at the knowledge that she just ate rat), he started finding her more attractive and seeing HER inner beauty.

Okay I know I have ADD so how come donkey seems to have 80d as well like he will not shut up there are moments where he's quiet but it's not often it's usually him thinking or he's worried or basically the thing where someone would be like okay that's small and meaningless I don't know why you're quiet and irritated about it but yet to someone with ADD it's a living hell it's irritating it's like something technically big for major people for everybody else but for us it's literally the small things that get us irritated and then the big things just break us down so it's like does he actually have ADD since he seems to act like he does or is he just different? I'm asking cuz I have ADD and a lot of people kind of relate me to donkey but yet with Shrek with my anger

Okay for the beginning opening I don't think he actually doesn't believe in love I think he thinks that true love first kiss and all that other nonsense is fake which he isn't wrong it is pretty fake and not true cuz you're not going to find love on the first try or the first go hell or even the second or third or fourth or whatever amount of chances you get it's literally random chance they say hey you got a possibility together there's a possibility but the possibility isn't always great yeah you can always find someone but is that person really worth it and the person that is right for you might not be in this time period or is just not near you like might be on the other side of the world going the other direction while you're going the opposite so you're hoping that you'll eventually meet up but you literally just keep going opposite directions when one changes the other changes if you're still not finding each other an ongoing circle for some till one day you eventually meet up which might not be in this lifetime which for a lot of things is quite unfair if you ask me to understandably it's like why a lot of people are upset about what's going on is because you're usually stuck around people who don't understand you or just not that great of a group

It's crazy to me how good this movie still is. Like despite all the pop culture jokes, it somehow refuses to age badly overall. Great video!
