If you’re using TouchID it’s still associated with a password. If your Touch ID fails then your backup is the password. Passkey is not a password. Nobody can steal it. Hope that helps.
Hi Ellen, thanks for this video. As usual you explain everything and make everything so easy to understand. I have two ipads with touch Id and an iPhone that uses face Id. Gosh how I miss the button.. Ipad thumbprints always work flawlessly. Face Id is a whole different experience. Maybe works half the time. I wind up having to put in my passcode. It’s so annoying. So using face Id with passkeys on different sites using my phone will not improve my experience. 😢

Hi - this is a helpful video, but what happens if you lose your iPhone/iPad? Is it a hassle? Especially since - in the case of the iPhone, you'll no longer have access to that phone's registered number...

Here’s Apple’s answer…..Within a device family, passkeys are synced to whatever cloud storage method your device uses, such as iCloud Keychain on Mac and iPhone or Google Password Manager on Android and ChromeOS, so if you lose your device, they should be stored there, and you should be able to restore your passkeys to a new device.

I have a iPhone and a Ipad. For the longest time they sync to each other an mirrored changes one one with the other. Recently with the last update I have found they do not sync with each other. What am I doing wrong? Both have been updated to latest ios 16.6.
I’m not really sure Charles? What isn’t being mirrored are we talking about Passwords?? Give me more information so I might be able to help. It also could be the update maybe it will be corrected when the next update is available. I haven’t had issues though.

What happens if you do delete all the passkeys? Does your old password take effect again, or what? Also what happens if your email address changes? Do you have to delete the passkeys for all passkey sites and recreate them?
Great questions. If you delete your Passkeys you would need to reset like a password. If your email address changes it would work the same as if you lost your password. If they can’t send you an email to reset it would be a problem.

Hi Ellen, Great explanation of the Apple Password system. I have been using Apple products for decades (SE30), and so I have tons of passwords, some old, some new, most should be updated/changed. Are you aware of any way to bring the whole pile of them up to date.. or change them all? Is there a strategy that makes sense? Thanks
Hi Scott, I wish there was a simple strategy. I’m in the same situation and I use 1Password to manage all my passwords. I try to go in every once in awhile and delete things I’m no longer using and update passwords periodically. It can be mind boggling. Good luck.🍀
First off, thanks for the great tutorial. Secondly, I was surprised when I saw you logging into Best Buy’s website and for two factor authentication you had to put in a pin code because I was hoping Passkeys would replace that as well. I mean if certain websites send you those pin codes via text message then that’s a weak point I would think since, for example, some people can be tricked into giving out that code to someone over the phone. I bring that up because I recently saw that in a news story, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jt6UDAYrf9I.html So I guess the best combination would be what Passkeys and a hardware security key like YubiKey (where you don’t have to enter any pin codes, just touch the connected YubiKey, assuming the website offers that feature)?
Hi Tony! Thanks for the thoughtful comment. Yes if using Apple’s Passkeys you must have two factor authentication turned on. It’s supposed to keep you secure. Here’s what Apple says about it: “A passkey is a cryptographic entity that’s not visible to you, and it’s used in place of a password. A passkey consists of a key pair, which-compared to a password-profoundly improves security. One key is public, registered with the website or app you’re using. The other key is private, held only by your devices. Through the use of powerful, industry-standard cryptography techniques, this key pair helps ensure a strong, private relationship between your devices and the website or app”. Hope that helps.
Thank you, Ellen, for this navigation tool in setting up Passkeys. I have about six of them functioning but did not know that was the name. My credit union was one of the first that I set up and They must have walked me through it. The USPS app is setup with Passkey. CVS pharmacy passkey is functional. Yippee 😊

This subject is new to me. I didn't know this technology was out there and already available. Not sure how I would apply it myself but maybe I can when other website offer the passkey option. Keep up the great work 👏🏽

Hey Carter! Are your sure it’s not asking for her passcode?? Remember you must also have two factor authentication turned on. I’m not really sure what the problem could be. It’s pretty straightforward.
@@EllensTipsForiOS Hi, she said it asking both of our passcode, but when she tries to enter my passcode it says wrong passcode. I don't know why. Also our authentication factor are turned on. Im having difficulty adding my sister as my recovery contact 😌
