I would suggest putting blocks underneath the bottom of the stand where you installed your new support beams. That way that load isn't just transferred to the bottom shelf that is not flat on the ground. Which is probably how it was intended, but your floor is not level either. 👌🏼
Great episode Mark! The sneak peak was such a teaser! You could stand that wood up straight like a tree or run it horizontal. Stoked to see the cabinet issues resolved and the big shallow ready to be back in business 🎉
I love this kind of videos as they show real day to day issues and how to tackle them.. it's not just setup new scape take a few pictures and that's it. Good work 👍
It's a very big undertaking. I just had to re-do my 75 gallon tank, taking everything out, catching all the fish. All the buckets, plants, hardscape, substrate. Took about 6 hours of time, but once you get into a rhythm it's not so bad. It's starting that's the hardest part. But now I'm done and happy. Looking forward to your finished project. Keep up the great work!
Ach, such a lot of work but well worth it when the tank becomes enjoyable again. I just took down a tank and I empathize. Looking forward to seeing the new scape👍
All lot of us have been there. It’s always a good idea to inspect the tank and stand frequently while doing maintenance. Especially the seams of a rimless aquarium. Great video.
I'm glad that you solved the problem but on the other hand I was successful that this layoit btl only lasted 3 months. What recently surprised me was that my food from the same manufacturer, but with different dimensions, was also collapsing in the middle two weeks ago. I also made wooden supports and it seems to have helped.😊
Greetings from the U. K. Good work mate. Just the piece of mind having leveled and strengthened the stand will make you enjoy it again. Looking forward to the new scape.
This is so unfortunate 😢 I really loved this scape.. but this needed done as otherwise there would have been a complete disaster! Excited for your next scape on this tank 🙏🙏
Just an idea. The foam is a problem, too. In your case. The Cabinet is not built for heavy Scapes like this. So, if you load it, is quite common, that heavy Tanks will behave like that when used with foam and these Cabinets. What you can do to improve that is, next to improving the cabinet, having a stable and straight surface and then, maximum, these hard and really thin foams, you often usw beneath laminate floor ( I do not know the english word. German: Laminatboden). There IS somewhere a "paper" on this behavior. But it's in german (Should work for you, i guess?) and i have to search for it. The bottomglass will form somekind of belly in the middle, that will push pressure in the center and because of the foam, there is no direct resistance and the Edges of the Wooden Baseplate warp upwards, while the center sinks in. The whole Wooden Plate warpes. This does not happen, if you place your Tank without or with just a really thin and rather hard foam beneath. This is aways part of a huge discussion. Often people say "i use styrofoam since '78 and never had a problem." Because Styrofoam ist not like these "aquarium" Foammatts. They are way too soft for their thickness. This is mostly important when having heavy tanks. Most of the time, the tank will be fine, even with these foammats. But not heavy tanks. These standard cabinets are often not suited for heavy loads like this. It is laughable sometimes. And now. let the hatecomments begin.
Before you get started on the new scape: Check the feet under that cabinet to see if they spin!!! Often times those style cabinets have adjustable feet so that you can level one side vs. the other.
You could easily fix the issue of the cabinet by just adding a MDF of 3-5cm in between the aquarium and the cabinet. I had this issue before for the same reasons and after fixing it, even with water splashing in the MDF, I never had issues again. Of course the MDF must be painted and reinforced against water to avoid swallowing parts. It's cheap, easy to do and in the end looks good, if painted at the same color of the cabinet.
Hi Mark, good luck with this. I assume you are confident the cabinet was weakened by the central feet being set too low, not that the floor gave under the weight. If the floor, then surely you do need a board to spread the weight evenly under the cabinet. Think the support 'sticks', timbers, reinforcement beams, are a good idea.
i personally wouldve put 2" by 4" wood inside stand to strutt it up and that be definitely strong enough, its a lovely aquascape you had shame it was taken down, i loved it so. Also reinforce that top too
Watching basically every JSAqua video, the foam is 100% the issue. No matter how thick the cabinet’s wooden board is, it will bend under the pressure of the mat. Two mat stripes left and right are enough. The aquarium can float in the center.
To bad, loved that scape! Exited to see the new one though! It might be a good idea to follow up on some of the reinforcement suggestions in the comments about fixing the beams to the cabinet walls. They should become an integral part of your cabinet.
Heb hetzelfde onderstel.
The big shallow has looked equally great in both layouts, and maybe a jungle inspired scape would look great for version 3.0 Also great video Mark and the production quality is only increasing as time goes on. Excited to see what the new layout will be!
There's no use for the wooden sticks, the sidepanels of the middle cabinet do the trick already. Just support the the middle underneath the cabinet and you're good to go.
Wood supports is one way instead of saying sticks for us Americans Mark lol I heard you unsure of how to say it! Also really happy you played it safe and removed the tank to reinforce the stand everything doesn’t always go as planned but now that you are fixing the issues I think you’ll have a better chance for success doing a rescape
Hopefully this will work out for you. Happend to me once too and I hand to hammer in some 2 x 4 lumber. Problem is that these stands are made of cheap engineered wood that do not like water. That being said - I'd throw in some screws from the other side of the walls into the lumber to tighting it up a bit. Just in case you accidently hit one of them and knock it out of place or worse they start to bow out. If you can put the lumber in the same placement on both sides of the wall and then can screw all 3 pieces together (lumber | walll | lumber) then it will be much stronger. Finally, if you can cut the lumber i would suggest you add 2 piece perpendicular to the verical pieces so the load is distrubuted across the beams. Good luck! love your videos!
Lol man you always get me with these titles. Starts off I'm thinking like "oh man he's getting rid of it completely!" but thankfully you're able to effect a repair and just do a whole new setup. Stop playing with my emotions MJ.
Honestly mate just get a carpenter in. The load ontop must be like 500+ kg. You’re gonna need decent support for that kind of load. If I were to suggest anything for now. It would be installing 5 leg supports, one on each corner and one in the middle, or even two. But wouldn’t leave you much space to put everything back in. Gl
Very impressive! I have alot of questions, but let's start with an easy one! Which climbing(?) plants were growing on that top branch that you removed first? They look so nice with those tiny roundish leaves, im really curious to what they are!
Also adding to my last comment u need to put wood under each feet of stand. The design was for it to hold also do vertical in back. If u don't it will be uneven support.if it was bowing in front ill bet in was in back
I mean to be honest those costly display stands are not designed for the weights of a aquarium. They are not tested and quality assured for intended use.
Ah the number one joykill of the aquarium hobby, the gravity. I hate that you get the bright idea to put an aquarium on a furniture and then it starts to bend, has happened to me twice already. Even small aquariums are surprisingly heavy.
I think starting from scratch was the right thing to do. The consequences of doing a 'bodge job' could have been catastrophic had the tank shattered. Some things are worth doing properly.
Zo, die vloer loopt aardig af. dat hout wat je heb gebruikt in de kast had je beter onder de kast kunne gebruiken. als had opgemeten wat het verschil was, dat had gezaagd dan had je een betere basis gehad. gr willem
I'm no expert but personally if I'm going for any tank more than 3 feet I'm going for a pillar and beam kind of support with mdf only as a cosmetic touch... I think mdfishtanks has his long tanks on those supports
You need only make/buy some bottom layer maded from hard wood (not chipboard etc) and instal furniture levelling feet ;) I can show you how I maded mine, but don't have any idea where I could contact to you. Take care! :)
I'd remove the top of the stand and replace with a new piece - wouldn't bet on bending that stuff accurately. Also check if the stand is within warranty.
To be honest it shud be taken down. Because i find it more of a plaudarium and I dnt get the vibe of actual planted tank . Previous tank was so much better, i hope we will get to see a tank with new ideas thank you.
To be honest, for me it was one of your worse tanks. I'm kinda' happy to see it go as I love your works and I'm sure that the next one will be a blast!
Hey Mark , 🎬 That's definitely a wrap & you have always had a great attitude in the past and it is going to be a great layout and one that you can make some improvements along the ? ....I am just wondering what are the thoughts as far as when you are finished up and you like what you just made my? Do you leave it alone aside from maintaining or will you still see a scape in a way that makes you want the want it to be better than?? ?
Yeah I think I'm always looking for ways to improve a layout, either by making the plants look healthier or by making small changes to the layout, something like that.
hey i am a wood worker and the biggest issue I see with your cabinet is that you dont have a back. a back would prevent your side panels to bend and keep everything square putting lumber will help but very little as if you are to heavy and push this furniture from the side it will fall like a card castle the design of this cabinet is very poor in term of solidity especially since it is intended to cary a lot of weight
What is the black plastic adapter (11:20) that you use to fill the tank? I've been trying to find something similar here in the US but no luck whatsoever. Thanks in advance.
your house is so crooked 😅 scape looked so much better without the big piece of wood, the channel between the rock in front and back looked very nice, guess viewing a shallow tank is from the front and top instead of only the normal front view
Why not put a rectangle concrete like rock underneat the cabinet? easy fix and long term solution too... I think you give yourself way too much trouble with the reinforcement instead of just that.
"chocks" "props" are some stupid English words for your sticks..... I would have put down a thicker top on the cabinet to prevent sag even further. But, she'll be right mate! looking forward to your magic MJ.
