Had this happening before with cheap cabinets. Just strengthen the cabinet a little with a wooden beam. Measure the height on the sides and put a wooden beam in the middle with exactly the same height as the sides (so its hard to put in place, since the center will be a little lower).

Hi MJ - first, thanks for your great channel, really so enjoyable! To your question: do nothing, as long as the tank is on an even level on the 4 corners it´s unlikely the glass will break. The worst you can do is to try to lift the middle part somehow. I had a 400L tank with exactly the same - it was bound even more in the middle and nothing happens over years. Also remember that some fish sellers or breeders with huge aquarium clusters have tanks which lie on the frames only in the 4 corners.

In the meantime, you can add additional supports inside the cabinet, underneath the center of the big shallow tank. At 3:55 you showed us the middle section of your cabinet, you can place a vertical 2x4 piece of wood on both sides of those bottles in there, against the walls. Then do the same for the bottom shelf underneath in this middle section.
@fredk4136
@fredk4136 Год назад
You should probably consider draining some (50 or 60 percent) of the water from the big shallow to reduce some of the stress on the tank while you are gone. After you are back you can come up with a more permanent solution.

Drain the water level as low as you can go, brace the tank as others have stated. Anything to buy you some time, since apartment damage is SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive. Especially if you aren't there to take action, the floors are gonna be sitting with water for a while, and that has the potential to cause way more damage than had you been on site and mopped the water up immediately.

As a few others have suggested, I would brace your stand in the middle. I think that could help ease the weight of the tank and your personal stress from worry. I also agree that the wood can certainly be causing the cloudiness. Enjoy your trip!
@Zerbii
@Zerbii Год назад
I read somewhere that rimless tanks distribute their weight to the 4 corners, I think the uneven load on the foam mat is normal. My 29g tall compresses the mat in the corner slightly more than the centre, maybe yours is more pronounced due to the length.
@jscapes782
@jscapes782 Год назад
Good luck with the big shallow. I'm convinced the wood is cause of the cloudy water even it's been running quite a while. They are huge pieces that can't be boiled up so will leech for months. Got to fix the stand and save the shallow it's beautiful. See you Saturday at the workshop 😄
@1NHEL
@1NHEL Год назад
the reason why your cabinet is bending is because it is not designed for rimless tanks, juwel cabinets are the best example for that. All juwel cabinets are designed for juwel tanks and juwel tanks have a rim all around and the weight of the tank will than be distributed equally. So when you use this kind of cabinets dont use a foam mat and you will not have any problems.
@artoputtipong1796
@artoputtipong1796 Год назад
I hope everything will be fine. I would recommend you drain the water out 20-30% to lower the weight and stress of the tank, that is what you can do now and add more reinforcement supports to your cabinet later The cloudiness may be because of the wood's remaining tannin or colloid substance mixed with fish waste. I boiled the driftwood 2-3 times and let it completely dry before putting it in the tank to prevent this issue (my tank is just 20 gallons) but in the case of the planted tank I would change the water 10-20% every 2-3 days with RO water and add Biochar media to the filter Keep going, Thanks for the Honestly content. I love it.

Difficult to be sure but it could just be that there is a small amount of 'natural' bow in your cabinet. The very purpose of the mat is to take out any bow or twist and therefore will compress more in some areas than others if the cabinet top is not exactly flat.

From the label on Clarity: "in order for Clarity™ to work effectively, you should have a filter with mechanical filtration (e.g., filter floss) connected to your aquarium". So, you may need to add some more floss in you filter (if you have any). Plus, drain water to reduce weight for the Weekend.

I had this issue with my fluval tank. Check the bottom of the cabinet. You should see the bow there as well. If that's the case all you need do is brace/support/pack the bottom. Use either wood wedges or cut some batten. If you know any carpenters they should be able to help you. Sorry if that makes no sense, more used to doing then telling. As for the water, try water changes with tap water. If you'v only started to switch them other, then they shouldn't mind too much. I'v found neon greens to be quite hardy. Try using less chemicals. Looks like they're reacting with eachother. Hope you have a nice time with Horizon. Bloody good shop. Was tricky to get aquascaping gear before I found them.
@johnVidBozo
@johnVidBozo Год назад
A little bit of trouble shooting would be good here. Is the bottom of the stand also bowing? If so shim up from the center bottom. Check the floor too. Is it bowing? That probably caused the stand to bow. Shims should fix that. Is the back edge of the stand bowing too? There seems to be bubbles forming in the corners of the tanks seal (2:57 and 3:01) . Where these bubbles there when the tank was new/empty? These could indicate stress and potential failure. If it were mine, I'd check floor first and shim if necessary. Then I'd add support to the middle of the stand. A vertical 1x1 (2.54cm square for you people with a rational measurement system :) ) should be enough. Use shims to fine tune till the top is straight. I'd do all this with the tank as empty as possible so there is less stress during the move. Good luck!

Clarity shoud not be used on tanks with soft water, or if it is used it shoud be 1/2 max of the regular amount, it is written on their site. If there is not enough organics and minerals for it to bind the water stays blue for days, essentially until it binds to something.

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience as always! It will be fine for a few days, but you must fix the pressure on the glass as it can result in micro cracks. People already gave a lot of good advices. For lower PH I am just trying an Aquario Neo Media Soft. It’s written that is slightly acid itself. I don’t know the result yet. I’ve added it to my filter 4 days ago - so far all looks fine. I’ll be thankful if you and the other aquarists here can share their experiences. 🙏 😊

Gotta say, the top panel for my fishtank cabinet has been bowed for years. It just happens to wood when you get it wet. People saying that it's because you used cheap particle board are wrong because the same thing happens to solid wood. If you want to avoid it you need to not get the wood wet, which for me is pretty impossible. But I don't think your tank is in immediate threat of collapsing. I can tell you don't often keep large tanks haha

For cloudy water the best will be to found reason what it make, but you could add sand filter balls instead of any flose, it last for very long, you can clean it and use it again. After mechanical filtration you could add chemical, like active charcoal or purogen,but it will removed colour of water to.

consider getting a big rolling tub, like the Rubbermaid brute 35 or 45g with a wheelbase... I have the 45g and added a RO float and a 200w heater there so it heats the water as it fills, so I don't shock the fish. the RO Float will stop the can from overfilling and spilling the water, so you can leave it on the night before you need to do a water change.

The filter floss is missing in your filter which needed Seachem Clarity to work. Alternatively ADA Clear Water is an option just dose less with live stock. Also the Oase skim probably not the best fit for low profile tanks as it disturb the substrate/sand. But since you use it for over a month now this should not be the main reason. The cabinet is scary tho

It is not established tank, as do something drastically to it like every month. There is nothing wrong with it. Some tannins from all these plants outside the tank. And some blue hue from unbound clarity. Some filterfloss and purigen will make the water crystal clear, not that it have any benefit to the fish nor plants.

This might sound weird, but buy a thick mirror. Put the mirror on the desk, then the mat, then the tank. Mirrors are the smoothest flattest thing around and should theoretically distribute the weight of the tank perfectly

Hey Mark-jan, don't worry! Almost all cabinets have this problem, it probebly isn't caused by the floor. More exspansive (custom build)cabinets don't have this problem, or a lot less. You did the right thing by placing a foam mat under the tank. This wil keep up the pressure under the bottom glass plate and it will not break. A few milimeters is no problem at all!! If the floor is causing it, put a thick wooden plate under the cabinet to distribute the weight. Good luck!

Oh dear….with the cabinet center supports currently in place, I don’t think it will fail and crash but…it will need some leveling and foundation support once you return. Blackwater style is not my personal preference but maybe it’s time for a new setup. Could one of your local shops offer emergency housing for current residents? They may have some extra “temporary “ space for you until you get established again… just a thought. Good Luck
@Lazar.
@Lazar. Год назад
When it comes to aligning the center of the cabinet, check if there are legs under the bottom shelf in the middle. Often manufacturers give the cheapest feet and only two in the middle. Consider replacing the legs with adjustable ones and add the legs where the bracket/divider of the cabinet is located. I know a lot of work, but at any time you can adjust the cabinet and not only on the sides to have a level, but also in the middle to align the bent part. The second way is to add aluminum structural profiles vertically and horizontally to create a frame inside the cabinet and adjust them.
@lukepauw5617

As others have said, bracing inside the cabinet would help support it, but there doesn't appear to be a ton of space. I think the top board may also be a problem. It looks to be an Ikea-style particle board (or an equivalent)? I would add a thicker board on top of the cabinet that can't flex as much. This would ensure the tank pressure is even. Could even get an Ikea wooden countertop to place between the tank and cabinet.

Store the RO water in big container/bucket multiple times and also add some tap water....won't be that bad hopefully...I believe the fishes won't care about that slight increase in hardness... Lastly, as many suggested, don't fill the tank fully...let it be 60-70% full only....use some seachem stability to add some beneficial bacteria.. I'm always wary to using too many chemicals in the water...does more harm....

I feel completely demotivated with this hobbie. I tried everything with my big tank and nothing works. There's still algae. I think it's a problem with the ambient light. It's a big tank so I decided to put it in my living room, it turns out there's too much light there, but I don't want to live in the darkness. A lot of money spent ,and a lot of work ,and no pleasure at all. Also when you want to go for a trip you have to ask someone to take care of your tank. I'm done guys. Thanks very much for all this time shared. I wish u good luck.

This happened to my 45p, i use hanging filter 200lph, i change the filter to canister diy 1600lph, do the 80% water change, and add some blue liquid purifier from local fish store and the water become crystal clear again

Oh no, that’s terrible. I would go buy a large plastic container bin to put your fish in with their heater and filter and even some of the plants until you have time to break down the entire tank and start over on a solid stand. Also use way less chemicals. I hope they’ll make it through until you can fix it.

I saw in some german aquascape channels that they avoid using a foam mat under tanks becuase it causes this sinking in the middle. you better have a complete flas surface that is level. :) lesson lerned I guess. Saw this topic a couple times at JS Aqua

Well with that Seachem Clarity I had similar issue. After 24 hours I put more filter floss in canister filter and it filtered the cloudiness out. You can try it, maybe it will help you.

Get yourself some 2x4's and some plywood. You can make yourself a much more sturdy stand. If you want to keep the look of the old one you can probably incorporate it into a new stand

I’ve never setup my own RO system in my homes, but in the past I have used filtered RO water from fill stations in grocery stores here in the US. Maybe an option if you ever need a large quantity on short notice?

If you want soft acidic water, stick to your remineralized RO water. You might need to get a higher capacity system. You cannot “soften” water.

Sucks tour tank is going thru that sunk center but it could be worse right . Get a car jack with a 2x4set the jack on bottom of stand place the 2x4 on top of car jack and turn the jack till the top of stand is level and let it be till you get back then you can drain the tank and brace up the stand.

Could you use tap water w/purification in the beginning to get cycled and then use RO water to compensate any evaporation moving forward? I am converting from salt to fresh.

If the centre vertical support boards are grounded (resting on the floor) then the movement (bowing) in your main horizontal board may be caused by your vertical boards buckling, use a straight edge to check.

Maybe check the end panels too for buckling

I second the additions having unexpected side effects. I quit losing fish and plants when I decided to work with nature instead of deluding myself into believing I could manipulate her. The more she is messed with, the longer it takes her to get balanced. The glass cracking is my larger worry.

I don't think the cabinet will collapse but the added pressure could cause the tank to spring a leak maybe if you can lower water level

I noticed that your substrate layer is very shallow. I would add more sand to house beneficial bacterial to offset any parameter swings that can occur when canister fails.

The cabinet shouldn't just suddenly fail. it will rest on top of the cabinet doors. I'm also going through the same issue with one of my tanks having cloudy water, even doing a 90% water change a couple days later it's cloudy.

Succes.

Oh wow, glad you caught the bowing so quickly! That usually cracks most rimless tanks so the sooner you can drain that and get a new stand the better! Was the stand rated for the tank weight? Here in the US a lot of people make their own custom stands and go way overboard with supports so that this can't happen! And we feel for you with your RO system. I always plan ahead and keep buckets of RO around so I can top off/change water as needed because it takes about 2 hours to do 10 gallons. I don't have issues with cloudy water so I have no idea what I'd do in this situation :(

Heya! This stand is actually rated for a much bigger tank, so I'm really surprised this happened...
@robdavinroy1761

@@MJAquascaping if the tank is constructed to sit on individual legs and not attached to a bottom rectangular base, then the floorboards in your apartment are bearing all the weight of those individual legs and that’s a disaster in the making. If this is the case then any kind of shimmying or wedges for level adjustment will do you absolutely no good. I suspect the manufacturer rates the strength of the stand assuming you are on an absolutely level bottom ground floor. If the bottom of the stand does indeed have a rectangular base, you are still putting a tremendous weight on those floorboards which are just suspended over spaced joists. Personally if you cannot go below and support the floorboards to solid ground I would abandon the idea of setting up this big of a tank on an upper floor apartment. Good luck!
@traumahealingandprevention
@traumahealingandprevention Год назад
@@MJAquascaping if it was rated for a larger tank, then it's the floor. Having had multiple 75 gallon tanks plus a water bed on a second floor apartment of a 150 year old home with wood floors, there's actually an easy fix... But it will require draining the tank into buckets, and catching all the fish to put into the buckets.... so you can put a flat, solid, unbending reinforcement under the cabinet. That will distribute the weight evenly onto your existing floor. You may need 2 floor reinforcements: 1 to lay directly on the floor, and a second to go on top that you can shim until it's level. If you have a stud finder to identify the weight bearing joists, it's worth moving the stand onto the joists.🤷‍♂️

Add support to the cabinet (without water) With water turbidity I would wait maybe it will pass on its own( . I would add starter bacteria and oxygen to the water .Cloudy water can be due to excessive protozoa proliferation from wooden decorations

Had this many times with catappa leaves. Easy fix, take the fish out and drop in some filter feeders: Moina, Daphnia, copepods, tubifex, shrimp, etc, it'll be crystal clear within a week. Also if water parameters are ok it's no problem, many fish live in cloudy waters.

My understanding from the componets of Seachem clarity is that consists of a bio-polymer that traps micro particles and precipitate them. It is possible, because of the massive wood you have, you might have a lot of micro-particles floating and by adding seachem clarity you formed micelles, so it looks more cloudy. It happened to my 55gal tank with two big pieces of manzanita wood. I increased the flow of my canister filter and the tank cleared up after 3 days. Parameters were good during the process. The initial cloudiness could be caused by the change of water Chemistry by adding the Ca/Mg remover bags? Not sure just ideas from a learning fish keeper 😊 Also I really enjoy your experiment videos!!

I've used a bit of clarity and I've totally ditched it because in my experience, it traps oxygen and my fish 90% of the time always gasped for air.

With regards to Seachem Clarity….this doesn‘t work for algae or bacteria blooms. Clarity is helpful when the water is dusty because of using non rinsed sand. Try a UV Filter and I‘m quite sure, your water clarity will return in just a few days.

The cabinet is ok, the problem is the wooden floor. The softer leveling/insulateing material benith the floor is over compressed due to the aquarium weight. As a precaution, Drain it as much as possible for the next few days and address this issu asap, it will not go away by itself.
