In What's Eating the Universe?: And Other Cosmic Questions, prolific author, physicist, cosmologist, and astrobiologist Paul Davies offers thought-provoking, concise essays on some of the most intriguing cosmological mysteries. What is the origin of matter, what could account for an observed giant "hole" in the universe? Could the be multiple or "bubble" universes? What are the origins of supermassive black holes and could they "eat" the universe? Are we alone in the universe? And much more.

Paul Davies is an internationally acclaimed physicist, cosmologist, and astrobiologist at Arizona State University, where he runs the pioneering Beyond Center for Fundamental Concepts in Science. He also chairs the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Post-Detection Task group, so that if SETI succeeds in finding intelligent life, he will be among the first to know. The asteroid 1992OG was officially renamed Pauldavies in his honor. In addition to his many scientific awards, Davies is the recipient of the 1995 Templeton Prize--the world's largest annual prize--for his work on science and religion. He is the author of more than twenty books, including The Mind of God, About Time, How to Build a Time Machine, and The Goldilocks Enigma. He lives in Tempe, Arizona.

Einstein's view on god was not ambiguous. He explicitly stated 'I do not believe in a personal God' expanded with ‘I believe in Spinoza's God who reveals himself in the orderly harmony of what exists, not in a God who concerns himself with the fates and actions of human beings’. It is essentially metaphorical having nothing to do with nor compatible with common theological tenets or beliefs.

Thank you for a particularly good interview. Always been an admirer of Paul Davies's books and I'll be buying his latest one! I find your presentations to be pitched just right for me, Chem grad from long ago, wanting more than the gosh-wow of many TV documentaries. Your guests could reduce me to tears with just a pencil and paper but things are brought into my intellectual range, challenging and never patronising. I don't know if trans-temporal telepathy is one of your talents, but often you ask a question of your guest just after I've thought of it! I feel privileged to be able to watch these videos. Best wishes from UK.

You say we _"now understand"_ what baryons are made of - the fundamental particles, but you don't know *how* they are made nor where those fundamental particles came from nor where the energy came from. If you have *faith* in the big bang singularity then how do you get the total mass of the universe starting with a density which would instantly create a black hole from which nothing could emerge?

Paul Davies is supreme in explaining complex and abstract concepts (especially outside Physics in more complex disciplines of science. Physics is fortunate in that it is the least complex of scientific fields with the most number of spherical cows to hide behind)

I’ve started to find these discussions increasingly frustrating. Surely it’s healthy to challenge basic assumptions and build radically different models as comparators given there are so many problems with the current model. Natural Philosophy demands nothing less. If an expanding universe requires 95% dark stuff to explain the red shift, how much dark stuff (call it Dark Aether) would be required in a non expanding universe to explain the red shift? If dark stuff is legitimate then what does that say about the scientific method?

Is there a relation between the sensation of acceleration and friction brought to bear by movement through the medium (air, water)? In space, for instance, there seems to be no sensation of acceleration.

Great interview! Thanks professor Keating for these efforts. Thanks For Paul Davies for his time to share thoughts with you and your audience. I have enjoyed Paul Davies books and ideas. I agree with much of modern science. I disagree with modern hybris of scientists. Paul Davies seems to me an intellectually honest scientist. I note a question asked of him previously if what it would take for him to believe in God. He replied with something to the effect that if Hod showed himself personally to him then he would be obliged to believe. Sort of a seeing is believing. However I noted that no one would believe him if he presented a story that God had revealed itself to Paul Davies. Occam’s razor is often used in arguments on philosophical points of view. However it is itself a point of view. Furthermore the easiest explanation is often mistaken as the correct one. This often leads to paradoxes and incomplete explanations. Complexity is often difficult to grasp, explain or believe. Simplicity is easy, often over simple. To wit the slightest change in the simplicity greatly alters the complexity of iterations. Consider: what if the universe, biology, philosophy, all existence is a function of a fractal pattern? What would such a pattern be?
@MS-od7je
@MS-od7je 2 года назад
How can we know what the pattern, fractal and simple idea which generates the complexity of everything from the evolution of societies, economics, biology, chemistry, physics and philosophy? Can we find a clue in any of these fields of ideas which could lead to a mathematical pattern, a theory of everything? Indeed, imho there is such a pattern. It is the fractal pattern of the brain. Consider that there can be an infinite number of ways that a thing can be spheroid but in order to be a specific fractal pattern shape it would reveal evidence of an underlying fundamental mathematical equation of precision of the universal fractal. Do consider the coronal cross Section Of the brain and it’s mapped caudal cross Section Of the brain and the cross over patterns within them as a evidence of just such a fractal pattern. If you will honestly consider that then also consider: A symbolic representation of philosophical perspective (belief) 0(0)=0, atheist reality is an illusion nihilist position (Everything)0=0, atheist relativist position (Lim_ 0->1)0=0 single universe atheist nihilist position (Lim_0->♾)0=0 multiverse atheist nihilist position (Everything)1= everything, Buddhist position Everything (everything)= everything, pan psychics Z_(n+1)=z^2 +c where c is start, deism evolution Z_(n+1)=z^2 +c where z iterates from 0, theistic creation // If we are created in the image of God then herein is that image. How can an ancient “book” make such a claim as “let us make “ them”in our own image” ? Who or what is “us” and what is the “ image”? This explains to what a dingo and a dog are converging onto. This explains why cockroaches exposed to high doses of radiation can regenerate themselves by reproduction of their genome to 140-ploidy. This explains why a cell membrane altered two headed flat worm can reproduce as a two headed flat worm with no alteration of its genome. It explains the toroid flow of subatomic patterns. It explains to exact iterations the Feynman diagrams. It explains the mind. Alas although it explains these things it is a more difficult hurdle than the cosmological constant to overcome as an explanation of chance existence. No happenstance here. It is exact to infinity beginning with 0. Keep up the great work! Job38:33.Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you set up their dominion over the earth?…36. Who endowed the heart with wisdom or gave understanding to the mind?

Very enjoyable youtube, the old world atmosphere of a measured and understated professor fielding queries from a keen younger new world acolyte who generously publishes it for us unwashed masses. A query from your audience- is it wise to be wary of those bearing gifts (Aristotle) and mathematical philosophy (Cantor, Hegel, Godel) when discussing spacetime, the CMB, paradoxes and black holes? An IAS post doc presented on black holes a few months back where some of his hole examples were perfectly spherical, like an on-the-fly self-compensated Hamiltonian, hence this note. Trigonometry in part deals with relationships between circles and triangles, rotating circles generate sine waves etc. a curved half circle and the straight line sum of triangle vertices both equal 180 degrees? The simplest example of Aristotle's wheel paradox shows how two different length wheel arcs, say from the wheel edge and half way up the wheel toward it's axis, when rolled out on the ground, form lines that can be plotted on a finite triangle, as the lines are of shorter and longer measurable lengths. So two circular arcs are projected on a flat ground surface Subsequently the lines are measured and these can be drawn as parallel horizontal lines below a triangle top vertex, connected by angled lines through their four endpoints. The triangle represents the linear transformation of both rolled out lines, with the top vertex acting as the wheel axis. Following Aristotle, Cantor posited there are an infinity of infinities of different sizes, Hegel had his dialect and Godel had his incompleteness theorem? One diverges. The two wheel lines though visually finite are also both infinite? Ok, so if the universe were a sphere and singular observers were located inside the sphere, and the CMB defined the outer curved boundary shell that encloses the observer's volume, notwithstanding some gravitational lensing at some locations due to concentrations of matter inside that sphere, how would the observers not see 180 degree triangles on the CMB from their triangulated viewpoint of the CMB? Getting back to the IAS post doc's perfectly spherical black holes, could a singular observer placed inside that bounded spacetime volume tell if theIr spacetime volume was flat or curved in this Russian doll? The above may be a daft caffienated question that doesn't stick to the wall, any comments, queries or criticism are most welcome!

You talk about _"order"_ being observed in the universe.. well that has a special meaning in thermodynamics and the problem with that is the second law. What it effectively means (following Feyman's Lecture) any system in which we observe a state of *order* must have come from a higher state of order in the past. Feynman then asked the right question *How did it get ordered in the first place?* You both know the Big Bang is incapable of producing that!

The religious doctrines of Omnipresence & Omniscience are Catholic doctrines, not Jewish, hello. The "O" doctrines entered the Catholic collection of paganism at the Council of Trent in the 16th Century. No one will ever "truly know the mind of God": Ecclesiastes 3:11. Re. Omniscience: The future hasn't happened, no one knows the future unless they are able to intervene and direct events. (Isaiah 46:11) "... I have spoken, and I will bring it about. I have purposed it, and I will also carry it out." When all else fails, read the instructions.

I take a more simplistic approach to understanding why astrophysicist exist and it still doesn't make any sense to me, why someone will spend an entire lifetime pondering a fantasy beyond their reach, since that work is not helping humanity one bit, because is totally unnecessary to know how the universe is going to eat itself with all its particles, if we are not going to be present to witness it, and so are any other future segment of the human race in the future, since they are going to be swallowed with those particles as well when the whole thing collapses, unless of course you think Dr. that people are going to want to witness how they are being eaten alive when that happens. Here is a practical question for you geniuses, let's say one lucky day you wake up and discover how to get free energy from the ether, will you immediately have a podcast announcing it to the people or you will run to tell your masters so each one can write a paper or a thesis about it till kingdom come, exactly, I thought so. But since you are not going to discover anything of a kind, in the meantime perhaps you care ti explain to me how come we still cant have wireless internet from Tonga so we can get direct news and videos from the disaster, they have been 4 days incommunicado from the civilized world just because a cable broke. Where are the thousands of satellites and all the starlink systems and the balloons in the stratosphere offering that great service to our species,?, they have been working on that since days in memoriam, and with the amount of rocket launched that we see, we thought they will be done by now. The natives in those island surely can use your help . But then I got it, when I read Arthur c Clark center for human imagination, its all a big fantasy game going on in your minds, nothing more than child's play, but instead of playing with visible toys you play with imaginary ones. I was going to compare you with Dr Fauci but at least he Interacts with real particles. Pardon me but I could only withstand listening to a couple of minutes of you two admiring each others work, books, theories, curriculums life achievements and all the other sophisticated stuff you do in your profession, it all sounds so comedic the mutual hypocritic idolatry of your admiration society, and so shallow in the grand skim of things, so I decided I am not worthy of being exposed to much greatness. Since I will never fly over 35k feet altitude I guess I will never be able to prove to myself that anything you talk about is real or makes any sense, but I know deep inside that neither are you two clowns or all your friends for that matter. I bet you anything you want.

I spent some time pondering whether I wanted to respond to this And here I am, so - On a basic level, I have to agree 90% with what you wrote. I have no need to know how old the universe is. I have no need to know what quantum physics is. I have no need to know if there are exoplanets. I have no need to know that you have a book you want me to buy. No need at all, I can live my life quite happily without any of that knowledge: all I need is shelter, food, family and friends. Oh, and good beer. However, I have an affliction called "curiousity". From a young age I was forever tinkering, taking things apart to see how they worked, modifying things to make them work differently and so on. Many humans have this affliction, and it is what has helped us to advance through the millennia. We have mapped the globe because of it, we have explored deep into the oceans because of it , and, yes, we have launched satellites into space to help people around the world get connection to the net (not sure what went wrong in Tonga, maybe the ground receivers had been damaged?) because of it. We are a curious species, we always want to know more - how does a clock work? Take it apart and look. What is an atom made of? Experiment to see what results you get. And so we learn. Once we stop learning, once we give up wanting to know new things, humanity will stagnate, and in the worst case scenario we will revert to superstition, and the gods of the gaps will fill the void in our knowledge. Bear in mind that this conversation between you and I, people who have never met irl, on devices that were not even dreamed of one hundred years ago is only possible because others, the type of people you seem to despise, have been curious, and their curiousity has brought about the world we now live in. However - I have to agree that this video is not so much about giving us info, but is more about selling a book. If I want to watch commercials I'll turn on the TV.

@@Skraeling1000 thanks you for taking the time to respond, contrary to what you may think I am not a troller nor I hate any group of individuals neither am I a contrarian, I am fairly educated individual, well traveled, speak many languages and have common sense to analyse things. One of the problems is that academia and people that have higher education that represent it have lost total touch with the common man, and they have secluded themselves in a make belief world of their own creation, in which the world they envision and promote has to exist that way or not exist at all. So through time they have formed a symbiotic relationship with the media and the global elites and got ahold of the supposed official narrative, creating a dangerous dynamic where knowledge and those who are entitled or approved to control it, also can modify at will the behavior of the masses and influence societies strategically according to the way they perceive things should be. I went along all my life with science without questioning or suspecting how its really become a commodity that has been used to manipulate for eons by those authorized to speak of science, but a few years ago something changed and I saw the possibility of playing devil's advocate and ask myself the most important question a person can be face with: what if its not that way, how much of it is pretend, how much of it is fake and, am I willing to fight my own convictions with all the consequences it can bring just so my unsatisfied soul can be convinced that I did everything possible in me to tie up the dots of what I don't understand, or simply go with the flow, and when i see videos like yours clap in unison with all the rest of the choir without challenging you to do better. At the end I want to say before my time in this life expires, that I understood what all this was all about and not just tagged along for the ride. Gravity was only a harmless mention in cartoon drawn on books of a person seating under a tree with an apple on his head, it had no importance or relevance to our life till it became the most consequential word in our dictionary, since it explains everything that happens in the universe, even though the most sophisticated scientist is yet to explain what it is or make sense of how it really exists, do you think I should just buy that at face value?. I am not going to lie,.for a common simple man like myself with low IQ its not easy to navigate the rabbit hole, its confusing and time consuming but it is also empowering in a way to participate in the quest of knowledge yet to be discovered, and I am really referring to our human condition and all the information many in the world believe its been hijacked and hidden from us, which will really allow each individual to maximize its potential and elevate its aspirations. Science does not want that, it wants exactly the opposite because it also promotes exactly the opposite by trying to accelerate the unnatural processes of life's existence inducing new forms and mechanisms with which to alter and transform everything that mankind have depended on for its survival since we originate here as a species. They call it progress, but to what degree at this point of history more of it is necessary Haven't we had enough progress and its time to leave it alone?, So why do they keep pushing us in that path. I know and understand exactly why and what is science trying to do but I have the ability to see from the outside in, most people are not that fortunate. Obviously we can see that civilization is clinging by a thin thread and has all the signs it could collapse even momentarily, as we bear witness the past couple of years, and you friend, yes you, do you really think the answers we need will come from a 10 billion dollar telescope that is going to give us the knowledge we need from before time begun, that will definitely save our species no, can you see the contradictions and science priorities.? I don't have a problem humiliating myself recognizing that I am wrong and surrendering my mind back to the establishment , in a way I wish I could be wrong because that will give me the peace of mind I need. In the meantime if you can tell me where I can find a real credible photograph of the earth taken from space or a live feed video or anything that doesn't have the name imagery or CGI attached I will be grateful, I believe I have never actually seen one , that will be a good start for you and me to be on the same page.

@@whyme6258 Ah No, I'll never be on the same page as you. I won't be in the same book, in fact I won't even be in the same library as you find yourself. Did you ever read the Narnia books by C. S .Lewis? In the last book, "The Final Battle" a group of dwarves find themselves incapable of understanding the fact that they have gone to heaven, and all is well. "Their prison is only in their own mind, yet they are in that prison, and so afraid of being taken in that they cannot be taken out.” This, I think, is where you are - you have entered a small hut of flat earthers and science deniers, and closed the door so firmly that reality can no longer get in. In the gloom you are free to believe and demonstrate anything that supports your viewpoint surrounded by like minded folk. In closing - I will be frank, and possibly somewhat insulting(?) about your youtube user name. Come now, that is the most defeatist, pessimistic and sad name I have seen. It reeks of victimhood. If that was my username, every time I saw it, it would chip away a little of my soul. For goodness sake, even something like "Prince of Flerfs" would be better! And I appreciate that I haven't a clue who you really are, you could be a successful CEO as far as I know, but still.. .yanno? Anyway, be good, see you on the next bardo

@@Skraeling1000 I did not expect any other attitude from you, I think I described it well previously when I said indoctrination is deep and goes a long way, so not only you are used to canceling others but its your way or the highway. There is only one problem, since life in this matrix is uncertain to say the least, there is always a possibility that you are wrong don't you think?, maybe an infinitesimal fraction of a percent that your perception of reality is flawed? But you couldn't be could you, because if that was the case and you find out your reality has been altered, then your life becomes meaningless. Narnia, cartoon characters, you forgot star wars, star trek, Harry Potter and the Lord of the rings. Is that really the world you live in? I know it is, but do you go to comiccon every year for autographs of the Marvel superheroes?, I live only a mile away from the convention center and it never entered my radar to stop there, wonder why? Instead of trying to be insulting, simply give me the facts I requested , just the evidence, its so simple for you to do it, why create controversy for no reason? 50% of the worlds population know that things are not on the up and up, but their life is so dependent and entangled in bs their head is always up their ass, they can not envision a way out so they are afraid to speak or do something about it. So you proved my point, and you feel aggravated because here you have someone that offered you impartial dialog and debate and your immediate reaction is attack, insults and dismissal, even without knowing anything about him, because you simply don't have the proof and the answers to all his fair questions. I thought you were more of an intellectual, and maybe you are in your realm, that is where all the characters you were raised with by Disney bunch together and praise each other and their followers. Funny thing that Walt's best buddy was a Nazi with the name of Von Brown, where all this make belief space odyssey started , can you see the connection? Indeed , you are a follower and a good one at that, commitment is a good quality And that is what the cabal is looking in its members. All I asked you is to show me the photos.

Great writer and good at explaining the basic ideas invented by other scientists. Here presented almost at some kind of new Einstein, or probably more a da Vinci, an expert on everything, sorry.
