The End of Trey Lance and The San Francisco 49ers 

If you are a 9er fan like i am you knew Brock was starting. Its so obvious. The guy played lights out, honestly he played better than any other qb for the 49ers, for sure in the kyle shanahan era. The crappy part is that we gave up so much to draft trey only to get rid of him. I wish him the best

I feel bad for Lance. He was over drafted and put under a microscope for it.

They didn't give up on him. He was staring until he got injured. If Jimmy G didn't also get injured and Brock Purdy never balled out, we wouldn't even be talking about this.

The thing is the 49ers are trying very hard to win the Super Bowl while they still have so many veterans. So really they don't have time to train a QB right now, which really suck for Trey Lance.

They can always call the Bears and say “hey we made a mistake and can we please have Justin Fields” 😂😂😂

Imagine being a top 5 pick, sitting, getting injured, and then having to watch the LAST OVERALL PICK dominate and earn the starting job in basically one game. I cannot state how unreal Purdy's first season was and I can't wait to watch him another season. I just don't see him falling off, and think we'll be seeing his name in the NFL for years to come. Hope Lance walks out of this with a chip on his shoulder, he needs to play angry and he needs to play like he has something to prove. Play his heart out.

I'm glad my Jets are not the only team that screwed up badly in QB selection in the 2021 NFL Draft and at least we finished as the #2 pick due to how we ended the season, the 9ers traded away a bunch of their future picks just for Trey Lance

Kyle was so much in a "win now" mindset that he hindered Trey Lance's development. He never had a chance under Kyle.

I feel for the guy. The Niners did not give him enough reps to give him a chance to become the QB he could have become.

Hey Mike! Great video...I really think at the end of the day the Denver Broncos will make a move on Lance to sit behind Russ and learn from perhaps the greatest QB whisperer Sean Peyton. New setting, QB friendly system and great mentor, Lance might be able to revive his career in Denver.

Nobody ever talks about what the 49ers did with the picks they got from Chicago. They drafted busts didn’t draft mahomes and then gave up two 1st round picks to draft another bust😂

I think tbh that we should keep him for this season and see how many qbs get in the hospital and if not trade him. I believe he can be successful elsewhere when he gets to play

We shouldn’t even be in this position period! In 2017 we should of drafted Deshaun Watson and if that didn’t work then drafted Justin Fields if you wanted athleticism at the quarterback position, not some guy that’s only had 500 drop backs or pass attempts since high school. I’m not giving up on Trey Lance but the guy just needs to play because the game just looks to fast for him and that’s the only way you get better! I’m hoping we will keep him sense he’s under contract until 2026. Sam Darold is on a 1 year contract and if there anything we learned last year is you can never have to many QBs on your roster.

How bad do you have to be to not succeed in his system? Out of all the qbs to beat you out, it had to be Sam freakin Darnold. If he can get back up on his horse, then I’ll think he’ll be fine. Problem is most qb’s won’t, especially not from a. Fall that high

It's way less complex than we're making about it. Either we were going to give him the reins and sacrifice a season to let him develop because there wasn't a clearer opportunity to win a SB, or we were going to cut our losses and let him develop elsewhere because the SB window is still wide open with another QB. Brock Purdy is that other QB, and he's apparently healthy now, so this preseason was more about marketing whatever Trey Lance's talents were for his eventual trade.

He was given a fair chance over 2 years. He got injured both years. That’s not the 9ers fault. Well, actually I think it is. They mistreat their QBs, but they do that equally to all.

I'm a 9er fan and I was telling my brother since last season that he isn't a starter or at least not ready to be a starter, but I always find it funny how people trash talk the fact that they gave up so much to get him when if he would have panned out they would be getting praises from anyone and everyone. Do I think they gave up too fast, no I don't, do I think he needs more time under center to get his game right, yes I do and I have felt that way since his rookie season

I did my own analysis on the QBs that year and I graded Lance around the same overall as Kyle Trask so

The luck for a team’s 3rd overall pick in their 3rd year to not be able to make the 2nd string, but still have a more than capable starter they just picked dead last from the draft. Some teams man.

This isn't the nightmare scenario for the 49ers. They found what appears to be a franchise qb with the last pick of the draft--that's unprecedented. Sure, they'd just paid way too much for a guy who clearly wasn't worth it, but that happens all the time with qbs. The nightmare scenario is if Purdy turns out to not be what he looked like last year, either because the injury did permanent damage or because defenses get him figured out with an off-season to watch tape and prepare. That's the scenario which will cause Shanahan's tenure with SF to end in ignominy. But so far, it looks like he's luckier than Bill Belichick.

I don't feel bad for lance whatsoever he is a top 3 pick that comes with alot of judgement.

I'm a Niner fan. This one is rough. To pick a QB at #3 overall who had so few college games and such a small data set was a mistake. That can't all be put on Lance. Covid stole a lot of experience he could have used at the college level. Then he gets to the Niners, and injured year one, injured year two. So again, not a lot of snaps as an NFL QB. Then, in walks Purdy, who nobody expected to perform at the level he did and he wins every game and the hearts and minds of Niners fans everywhere. So now, you have a kid (Lance) who just never got the experience he needs not necessarily through any fault of his own, but John and Kyle have to do right by the team first and foremost. I would love to see Lance either stay and develop or go to a system where he can achieve his full potential but as a Niner fan, I'm damn glad Purdy kept the Niners from being in the dumpster for the next few years because of the botched draft pick.

"Why did they trade up for a project QB and then give up on him?" Because their 7th round, dead last pick popped off and played at an elite level. There's no need to keep Lance around and the trading him just brings in more value that they wouldn't get out of Lance now that Purdy is there.

I think Lance will go down as a draft bust BUT I think he will be one that is not mentioned a lot. I think draft busts are mentioned more and more if they play a lot of a games and you can see the potential wasn’t there from those many starts. Lance had only played a couple games but has been hurt too much so he might go down as someone who you never saw enough.
