When one of Marlon's clients noticed the shell of this 1972 Porsche 911 sitting in the corner of his workshop, he requested Marlon and his team build one of the most beautiful restomods we've laid eyes on. This is the story behind that build.

Great video Henry. For $1,000,000 I’d have a new GT2 RS which will be a supremely collectable car, plus a new top end Caterham and a holiday. This car looks like one of those indulgent cars for people with more money than sense. 🇨🇦👍

This is a beautiful build and gives me a lot of inspiration for '88 backdate project (also going the 3.4 or 3.5 twin plug route). However, I didn't see anything here that couldn't be achieved for under 200k (not including vehicle). Maybe I'm completely missing something, but this price just seems completely out there and totally overshadows how great of a project this is... 300-350k all in sounds about right when you figure parts, labor and some R&D that went into this project. However, I would take this over a Singer. I think Singer makes amazing vehicles but they are just a bit too removed from the core 911 DNA. This definitely feels more like a hotrod 911.

Since your last video the 911 FB groups are buzzing about how this price makes sense. The consensus is that it does not. I've never built one so I can't say what it does or does not cost, but I would really love to see the BOM and labor hours that go into a build like this.
@paul_howey
@paul_howey 4 года назад
If you don't factor in the vehicle price, I can't see more than 200k here in parts and labor. It sounds like the shop is trying to recoup R&D costs upfront from previous builds. This shop blew this chance at some awesome exposure by not pricing this build at around 300-350k all-in. They would have had a waiting list already with deposits and after the first 10 cars or so, be making a profit.

Early 911's cost twice as much as 964's across the board. Everything about them is more specialized, rare, and expensive. It makes sense that this would cost twice as much as a singer. Not to mention this company clearly isnt capable of production like singer, therefore they have to cover their ass with limited builds.
@paul_howey
@paul_howey 4 года назад
focusboy I’m not sure where you are getting that information from but it’s simply not true. I have owned both a 964 and my current early 911 and while some things are more expensive on one platform, there are also things that are cheaper on the other. Both will have their challenges and advantages but there is definitely not 2x cost difference. My build will be very close to what is shown in this video when finished (not going full KW suspension) and I’ll have maybe 100k invested doing most of the labor myself. Also Singer is on a whole other level when it comes to their builds. Completely bespoke carbon bodies, complete interiors with all of the creature comforts included, and some of the best motors in the business are just a few of the things Singer is doing better than just about anyone.
@jonny042
@jonny042 4 года назад
@@paul_howey shop rate is probably $125 or more at that place. A couple thousand hours on a car like that might get the shell built and painted so that's a quarter of the price right there. Add in body parts (price yourself some thin gauge RS panels from Porsche lately?) and supplies and a donor shell and you've blown half your million dollar budget right there.

It is very hard to see why this can justify a $1M price tag, twice the price of a Singer! It is mostly stock parts by the sounds of things apart from the engine, suspension and interior. I would love to see a breakdown of their invoice to see how on earth they ended up at that figure. The poor guy that commissioned this has been well and truly had!
@ChrisNichollsPhoto
@ChrisNichollsPhoto 4 года назад
Whether it's worth $1M is something only the owner can decide. But for me, if I had all the money in the world, I'd take this over a Singer. The Singer is a work of art, but it's not actually designed to drive well. It may go fast in a straight line, and it may sound good, and look gorgeous while doing it, but there's almost nothing been done to the suspension, and the wheels are massively wider and have huge offset compared to stock, so all they've created is an offset widebody (effectively a very classy RWB in simple engineering terms) with nothing done to compensate for all the handling compromises that brings. You can see it in every driving video. It's just not as smooth, or as balanced as this. I can see why people are seduced by the Singer, but the fact of the matter is it's a very pretty, obsessively-built artwork. The philosophy of this is clearly to create something that gives the best driving experience while also being fancy. Big difference. (I should add the DLS is likely a lot better to drive, but given it has has bespoke suspension designed by Williams, it damn well should handle a lot better).
@robburton8462
@robburton8462 4 года назад
@@ChrisNichollsPhoto I'm struggling to take this reply seriously. Are you saying that Singer are incapable of adding some KW coil-overs, control arms and setting up a decent geometry?! On your second point you are absolutely correct in that at this price point one of the only comparable cars is the Singer DLS. This can more easily justify its price with its the extensive research and development with Willams and even Mr Mezger himself. In stark comparison this workshop 5001 car looks so over priced it is borderline fraud!
@brainfulify
@brainfulify 4 года назад
Each car probably takes at least a year to build, ~2000 hours. Body shop, mechanics, interior trimmers charging from $50-$150+/hour. Add to that the cost of new OEM Porsche parts, materials, bespoke/custom engineered parts, coveted used parts, and the car itself, I can see it all adding up really fast, however probably not far beyond $500k. Shop is definitely making a killing off rich Porsche fanatics...
@ChrisNichollsPhoto
@ChrisNichollsPhoto 4 года назад
@@robburton8462 No, you didn't read my reply properly. Of course Singer is capable of fitting what this company does. The thing is, they don't (KWs aside). Go check their specs page. They literally only add the KW coilovers, upgrade the bushes and swaybars, and if you pay more money, fit Ohlins and a set of Evo uprights. None of which do anything to offset the negative handling effects of a huge increase in track via wheel offset only. If they cared about handling in the non-DLS versions, they'd do the correct thing and redo the suspension geometry from scratch to compensate for scrub. They haven't, which, as I said, reinforces the fact that Singers are very pretty and fast, but are not designed to handle as well as they could. This particular company avoids most of those issues by simply not going very wide in the body. They therefore don't have scrub radius issues to the same extent.
@Mr888rM
@Mr888rM 4 года назад
@@ChrisNichollsPhoto Have you ever driven a Singer or an early 911? Because they have very different goals and outcomes. I promise if you drive a singer you will not think it has poor handling. I think you are missing the point of both cars. The singer is supposed to be the ultimate aircooled 911. Its based on a 964 chassis. The 5001 has "upgraded" suspension and geometry from the newer cars ie. 964. I think its stupid to claim that one car is poorly engineered and the other car that has the same suspension components is superior. The 5001 is obviously a very well executed hot rod based on a pre 73' 911. I think what most people dont realize is that nearly every part of a pre 73' is twice the price of 964 components. So it makes sense that it would cost nearly twice as much as a singer.

It makes more sense in the context of the full interview. Seems to have real engineering integrity and some lovely bespoke touches. I believe Singers in comparison now cost way more than S500k and as someone pointed out, the 72 donor car is for many, particularly Americans, the holy grail and significantly more expensive. $1m is still eye watering for a hot rod but for those in the UK, it’s notable that the sterling cost would be way way less a few years ago.

Regardless, there is no way this car is should cost $1m. We did several of these cars to a very similar spec about 10-12 years ago here in Germany. Bodys were acid dipped, restored, seam welded, etc. Motors and suspensions were not excessive but nowhere near stock and very solid street/track day combos. Interiors were completely re-done. And all by German craftsmen (just to add to the mystique LOL). With all work, parts, project management, etcetc they were in the ballpark of 1/10th of what this car is supposedly going at. So allow for 10-12 years of inflation, truly OTT work and parts (sold at prices including mystique, aura, and Porsche-Tax) and triple the entry price for a restorable base vehicle... you're still going to have a hard time topping $250k by much - and that is with really only possible by going truly OTT on EVERYTHING. So go excessively nuts on everything, find only the most expensive vendors and sub-contractors, charge $500/hr for your own shop labor and maybe manage to double that figure. So now you're approaching $500k (which I have an insanely difficult time imagining achieving, even with trying). So where is the other $500k? And the $1000 + work-paint-and-installation splitter is not going to cover that difference. In contrast to this car, Singer makes a lot of their own parts including a good portion of the body, has Cosworth or Ed Pink build their engines (which is OTT), and, aside from everything else, sells a bit of their own mystique. And the only Singer that I have ever heard of which was supposed to be in that price range was the Singer/Williams F1 Engineering DLS. Not the same as this on any level.

I love what guys like these, Singer and Magnus Walker, to name a few, have been creating, using the old, air cooled 911's over the past few years. If they had the money, why anyone would choose a modern, liquid cooled model, over a bespoke, hand built original, is beyond me. Obviously the current 911's are fast, hugely capable and beautifully engineered cars, but i don't think they have any where near the character or purity of the earlier cars, and when done properly, a "resto modded" air cooled car can be just as reliable, usable and not to mention capable, as any of the current line up. I bet they are a whole lot more fun to drive too, and certainly prettier. In my opinion anyway.

I really hope he was exaggerating about the price of the Jabroc wood splitter when he said it was a $1,000 piece of wood. Pegasus Auto Racing sells full 39”x77” sheets of Jabroc in multiple thicknesses with a 12mm or 1/2 inch thick sheet costing $659. This is what their website says about Jabroc. “Jabroc is longer-wearing and less expensive than carbon fiber. It is about half the strength of steel, but it is 80% lighter than steel. It is also quicker to machine than steel and can be machines with regular metal or wood working tools which means savings on fabrication costs. Jabroc is non-conductive and non-sparking, which increases safety when used for skid plates.”

Shops have to make money on parts and supplies too. Sure you can buy it from Pegasus for that plus shipping and taxes and cut it at home with your jigsaw. Most people are not going to understand the difference that makes - FWIW - the build order for the actual 1970 W30 oldmobile that paced the indy 500 states triple spot-welds for the floor pans, frame supports, rockers wheelhouses. I have stated multiple times that stitch or even hammer /dolly edges flat and then use a tig torch and butter the edge would add mounds of stiffness without adding any weight.

I was going to skip this out of frustration over these million dollar Porsche's (as good as they may be) then I saw it was by Carfection.....so I said I'd give it ago

I kept waiting to be blown away... but never was. Cool car, and would probably be priced right at $250k. The problem here is that Singer exists and they sell a better car for far less money.

I'm going to take a wild guess that nobody has actually paid $1m for this. I'm reckoning that figure has been thrown out there because it's a headline figure that has everyone talking and is getting them massive exposure (as I certainly had never heard of him/them before now). Oh anyone can say that their vehicle is x amount of money to buy/build..... but that doesn't mean they are going to get it. Hey, Carfection...... I have a 1992 Volvo 940 Estate with nearly 400k miles on the clock sitting in a yard down here - I'm asking £150k for it...... fancy coming to do a feature on it? 😉

The Singer waiting list is now, what....3 years? There will be others like this guy to move into the available space. And that’s no bad thing - a little bit of saturation should drive prices to somewhere a tiny bit more reasonable and the World can’t have too many beautiful 911s.

Well, Porsche's Project Gold 993 sold for $3Million which is triple the amount. Also, Singer and RWB is more like a club/cult where there's more than one of them and owners come together for a drive or meet. Whereas this would just be good for a collector to be stored and not driven after.

Theres too many Porsche out there that are better and offer a more pure experience than this at a much lower price. Very difficult to justify. With that said this is still an excellent build.
